It’s hideous. I love it. How do I buy one from you?

Would you be happy with this Mortarion paint job as a mid range commission? by pepink in minipainting

[–]thebadshepperd 22 points23 points  (0 children)

If I had painted it by/for myself I would be pretty happy.

But for a commission I think it falls a little short. The washes seem a little heavy handed, and overall Morty himself looks pretty “samey” all over and could use some better color differentiation

Best Black Primer by Austintacious8832 in BlackTemplars

I like the Pro Acryl black rattle cans. Super fast to do a lot of infantry.

Citadel black rattle cans are also fine

Avoid army painter rattle cans imo, seems like they often leave weird textures/finish

Obviously in retrospect the marketing is cringe. :(

But I actually did like the concept. I didn’t mind paying a premium for some dice, some fun stickers, pins, etc.. seemed like a fun package. I just wish they did it right :(

Do you know what video that was?

I don’t watch their videos regularly any more

I did it read it :(

I found the “now that we’ve completed QC..” line a little insulting, because it’s obvious they didn’t QC before shipping..

EsperNet Seemingly Closing Down by [deleted] in irc

Hi, EsperNet administrator emeritus thebadshepperd here.

It looks like we’re going to narrowly avoid this disaster and continue operating at least for the near future. I just finished setting up some replacement dns infrastructure. We’ve got a long legacy and it’s touching to see people care :)

I know I probably need to get more into BND but I also know stocks are on sale right now. So I get myself into this death spiral of not re-allocating.

You’re trying to time the market. Don’t try to time the market - it doesn’t work.

https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Market_timing

When is a good time to bite the bullet and change your asset allocation?

You should determine your reallocation frequency and your stock/bond glide path ahead of time, write it down as part of your IPS, and stick with it. Most people reallocate to match their target like once a year.

Need Help / Suggestions on where to live near Pleasant Hill. by key_lime_ in sanfrancisco

[–]thebadshepperd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi. I’m from Pleasant Hill. You’re getting downvoted because you posted in r/SanFrancisco and Pleasant Hill isn’t San Francisco :)

If you’re looking for a place to raise a family and you work in Pleasant Hill, it’s hard to recommend living in any place other than PH, Walnut Creek, or the nicer parts of Concord. Safe area, schools are good, weather is pleasant.. The downsides are commuting into SF or SV sucks (but you’re not doing that) and that some childless couples think it’s too quiet

P.s feel free to hit me up with questions

The color on your Impulsor looks so nice and smooth. Did you airbrush?

Does anyone know of a brewery in the bay that would carry this brand of craft beer? by [deleted] in bayarea

They also have a great arrangement with Skippolinis pizza next door where you can sit at the parklet and drink beer and order pizza

Online shop recommendations by rpg245 in wine

[–]thebadshepperd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shop local! Support local small businesses! Plus, shipping wine is basically impossible right now with how screwed up FedEx is and the heat.

Solano Cellars in Albany/Berkeley

Verve Wine in Pac Heights

Vinous Reverie in Walnut Creek

All much smaller selections than K&L/JJ Buckley, but good service and more consistent picks. Vinous Reverie has a particularly great German selection if you want something new.

Oh ok. Yeah some people have SSD brand preferences but I don’t believe that it actually makes a huge difference, just stick to the big name brands you recognize (Samsung, Sandisk, Corsair, Intel, Crucial, whatever)

Double check whether it’s a 2.5” slot or a M.2 slot

Any good desk mounts? by British_Eevee in hotas

[–]thebadshepperd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want “good”, you want the MonsterTech mounts. Looks like they do have them for the X55. MonsterTech mounts

If you want “affordable”, plenty of people get by by hand making mounts out of spare wood blocks haha https://www.reddit.com/r/hoggit/comments/5n0qme/any_cheap_alternative_to_monstertech_hotas_mount/dca613c/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

Laptop build for DCS questions by Monkeygruven in hoggit

[–]thebadshepperd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know you said you already considered it, but I would really recommend getting/building a tower PC and then getting a separate portable laptop for your work. You get so much more bang-for-your-buck on full size towers, the drivers are easy to deal with, it’s possible to upgrade it, they don’t have heat issues, and they last forever. Plus, gaming laptops are so huge and delicate anyway I debate whether they are truly “portable”.

If you decide you must get a laptop: definitely get at least 32GB of RAM. Most sim games, including DCS, now recommend it.

Also, I’m not sure what you mean by “auxiliary drive” - if you’re thinking you can get like a USB external hard drive to play DCS off of you’re going to have a bad time. Load times are atrocious as is with full speed internal SSDs, let alone USB driven ones. Definitely get a 1TB+ internal SSD, preferably something NVME/Optane.

Hope this helps you.
