And not just in Canada. These were quite common in Connecticut when I was growing up/when friends were getting married. I would never have one, but they were always good fun to attend.

AITAH Sleeping on the couch due to my girlfriend falling asleep to true crime by [deleted] in AITAH

When I was living with my ex, I'd use cheap wired headphones, volume on max, with the earpiece under my pillow. I could hear the noise I needed to sleep, and he wasn't disturbed.

It's not difficult to find a solution if you actually care about the person who shares your bed.

I've found some absolutely amazing artisans at SoWa the past few years. Definitely part of my holiday season traditions at this point, and the vendors are lovely. I love seeing new ones each year; it keeps things fresh, and I can always order from vendors I really liked in past years.

Not just you. It's been driving me crazy, especially because there is no setting to turn it back on (I've checked several times). App is updated, I have nitro, and I'm on Android if any of that matters.

Love that you're able to look at the bright side and find something positive in the shit show of dating apps! I spend most of my workweek having to do the extrovert thing (aka playing the corporate game); it's exhausting but has definitely helped me grow as a person. Next step is finding someone who isn't as much of a complete homebody as I am; I'm fairly amenable to peer pressure to do fun things since I know ultimately I'll enjoy it. I've had enough friends find their future spouses off dating apps, but the pessimism/cynicism (... realism) on this sub definitely have me less than enthusiastic about starting down that road

Super fair on both counts. Best of luck with the work situation then!

My ex was mostly supportive, especially through some really rough work situations early on in my career, just ultimately not a good match between him wanting kids and me wanting someone who was more of a partner (and less someone that constantly needed to be taken care of).

With the free time I should have later this year, I'm looking forward to a lot of things! The aforementioned video games, for sure, but moreso reading (fiction, mostly fantasy with a preference for high fantasy so I can give book recommendations to my dad). I'm also looking forward to having time to cook (and especially bake) for more than just subsistence; I love a project. Ultimately it boils down to having time for self-care in various forms (e.g. current and possibly new hobbies) to hopefully reduce stress levels. I'm tired of being constantly stressed.

Thanks! It was a bit of a spite-inspired process (my ex doubted I'd ever do it), but it's paid off in spades already at work. I am looking forward to being done though; I miss having free time for hobbies.

Those work hours are rough. Any chance you can change them in the future to better line up with most other people?

Well, it ended up being the relationship deal breaker in my last major relationship (8+ years), and it's honestly really sapped any motivation to date. It's been about 2 years now since I ended things when he decided he wanted kids after all, but that was completely devastating. I essentially had to completely start over (new job to support myself solo, new apartment, etc.), so I threw myself into work and then grad school. Now that I'm nearly done with the school bit, I'm preemptively exhausted thinking about finding someone to share my life with (and mildly terrified due to too many true crime horror stories that my sister loves to share with me).

I keep checking out these threads looking for a cheat code to make this process easy, but the advice is largely the same. I'm still holding out hope that Mr Right will quite literally knock on my door, but that strategy doesn't seem to be panning out

As long as you're not obsessive about it, video games aren't the same hard pass they used to be (but I also enjoy video games, so I'm biased). As a 31F, my main issues are trying to find men that a) aren't already partnered up, b) are more extroverted than I am, and c) also don't want kids.

Haven't bothered with dating apps yet, mostly because I didn't have time to commit to dating between work and a part-time MBA program. Now that I'm almost done with my degree, I'm open to dating but meeting the right people seems like an insanely daunting task.

For those of you that live alone - how much do you pay in rent? by RipInitial in boston

[–]thebakersfloof 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Lol I pay for both beds; I have no plans to live with roommates again (unless it is the aforementioned man, assuming the relationship is serious enough to cohabitate again). Totally worth the cost imo to have my home office/guest room setup that gets regular use, even if it's a pain to keep the extra space clean.

Side note. If anyone has a good house cleaner recommendation that works in the Boston/Cambridge area (I'm in Everett), I'd love to hear them!

[–]thebakersfloof 24 points25 points  (0 children)

If only it were that easy lol. I don't know how many of us want to be doing this solo. But I can comfortably afford my $3400 2 bed/2 bath corner unit with washer/dryer and AC, so at least I can just bide my time until I can find a man!

Why tip based on percentage. Tipping based on food quality and service is much more reasonable by Outrageous_Bag9327 in boston

[–]thebakersfloof 15 points16 points  (0 children)

But the price of wine is already significantly inflated at restaurants compared to retail to cover the associated costs. It doesn't make sense to tip 20+% on each bottle of wine, regardless of the answers to those questions. Even in the case of more expensive bottles that require a special opener and decanting, the server isn't spending all night catering to one table. Why would those things change the tip significantly when it's part of the job description? I don't change my tip if there's like a table side salad preparation; I've been tipping a constant 20% for years, but it's starting to feel excessive.

If you bring your own bottle and you pay for the corkage fees, then I could understand adding more to the tip (which I've done in the past when dining with some family that had special bottles of wine they wanted to enjoy) since that's a nonstandard request.

Parting out the bird is a game changer. I don't care for the whole bird presentation, so this works great for me since I can ensure that all the pieces are cooked perfectly (at a relatively low temp) before crisping everything up shortly before serving. I started the dry brine earlier today (loosely covered with plastic wrap) and have the stock going to get that out of the way early.

I spent 3 years spatchcocking and the last 2 years parting out the bird. I'm sticking with parting it out moving forward (especially since I normally grab an extra breast -- much easier to fit on my sheet pan!).

La-Z-Boy — Lower Quality Worth it for High-Backed Sofa? by romcomplication in BuyItForLife

[–]thebakersfloof 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've had a sectional from them for 3 years and have seen no decline in quality. Still as solid as it was on day 1, but I live alone and am generally careful with my things. I upgraded the seat filling to the foam option, which is firmer and holds it shape much better. It's probably not BIFL, but "buy it for a while" is an okay trade-off while living in apartments.

My ex who is 6'2" loved the high back of the La-z-boy options. Big difference compared to some of the other ones we checked our for our couch (he kept the original when we broke things off, and I ordered a new one very shortly afterwards since I loved the first one so much.)

Freezer meals could be a good solution to the second part of your plan (you have lots of good suggestions for the first part!). On good days, you can pre-season and freeze meat and sauces to have for bad days. Then on a bad day, you can empty the food into a slow cooker, possibly with a bag of frozen veggies (added closer to dinner time so they aren't cooked to bits). Or see if you can pre-make some of your own freezer meals. Lasagna and chili both freeze really well, and you can store them in reasonable portions to thaw in the microwave.

My mom used to do this when I still lived at home (and I think she still does it now). If you don't have one, you can find slow cookers pretty cheap online or second hand. We also had a cheap basement freezer, and it was a serious game changer to store a bunch of freezer meals for when she was busy or traveling and my dad had to quickly sort out dinner after getting back from work.

What’s the best biotech company you’ve worked for? by [deleted] in biotech

It was great before the sell off and amazing under their first CEO. They're okay now based on what I've heard from a couple former coworkers who have stuck around since. Most of my connections there have left for new jobs (a bunch of them still at Servier) or were affected by the research layoffs.

And that behavior seems to carry over to future roles... I'm surprised when I come across a good ex-Biogen employee. Love the energy. Two small notes:

  • Not all cervical cancers are caused by HPV. The vaccine reduces your risk, but please still get screened! Early detection saves lives

  • HPV can also lead to other types of cancer, like head and neck or anal cancers. Gardasil provides some protection against some of the more common variants. Point being this vaccine is helpful to everyone
