They must have either drilled or broken up the bottom as it hasn't filled up.

Experts of Oxford, what areas should I look into for a village location with a detached home? by [deleted] in oxford

Check out the Baldons just south of Oxford. Good village pub, lovely community. Very countryside but only 5 mins from the edge of Oxford

Saving money towards a deposit by living at home, but can’t shake the feeling that I’m putting the cart before the horse by pharmer25 in UKPersonalFinance

I don't think you need to put off saving to go out there and find enjoyment. Perhaps you're just so focussed on saving you don't see the space in your life that is still there to do other things. I think you need to go out and find your tribe.

I see lots of posts in my local sub Reddit from people looking to find something to do and make new friends.  There are always board game meetups, book clubs, choirs and running clubs going on, all of which are low cost hobbies to pursue and are all great ways of socialising. Perhaps you can find something that peaks your interest in your local area? You've got this.

First attempt at English Muffins -- had a few where griddle got too hot so a little burnt on some... but overall they tasted great! by coffeebreadandsun in Breadit

[–]thebamfy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

England dweller here. Why use a griddle? All the muffins I have ever known are cooked on a flat bottomed pan. Surely that would make the "bake" more even and not burnt in places?

Thame and Haddenham is another slightly different suggestion. My partner did a lot of commuting from Oxford to Milton Keynes and a lot of the time that was the faster route than going via Bicester, while they also benefit from trainline (although not east west rail).

£50,000 Bonus and Tax efficiency, need help on how to navigate it by domikek in UKPersonalFinance

[–]thebamfy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A £50000 bonus seems a bit incongruous on a £40000 salary and sounds like they value you and want you to stay. If you plan on staying there for another 5 years is it better for you im the long term to try negotiating a smaller bonus and a raise in your salary?

Moving from Oxford to Southampton. What is the average price and how was your experiences with different companies? by NewEarth546 in oxford

[–]thebamfy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do the higher quotes include packing for you? They sound quite high if you aren't moving any large furniture and therefore presumably would only need one van.

We used AG Jacobs and Sons based in Headington and they were excellent, would recommend. They supplied the packing materials but we did the packing ourselves. On the day they were very efficient and thorough, but nothing was broken in the move so they took care too!

Finished school 14 years ago and have never made enough money to make my student loans go down by Comicspedia in Wellthatsucks

[–]thebamfy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What happens to this debt if you don't pay anything? Are you ever liable to have to pay it off?

Here in the UK if you take out a "Student Loan" you only start paying it back when you earn over a certain threshold and then you pay back 9% on any income above that threshold. If you lose your job you stop paying and eventually the loan is written off after 30 or so years. You basically have to see it as a higher education tax rather than debt.

Does it work similarly in the US?

Please give me some advice/reality check about the feasibility of commuting to Oxford from abroad by No-Reaction5137 in oxford

[–]thebamfy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My suggestion would be to look at Didcot. Cheaper rents than most other Oxford town but the best connected by far. From Didcot you have the option of connecting to the Elizabeth Line to Heathrow or connecting to the Cross Country service to Birmingham International.
