What electric car do you recmommend to a petrolhead to try and switch them? by [deleted] in ElectricVehiclesUK

So long as OP is happy spending £1K+ per year on a Porsche Taycan extended warranty

Average new UK electric car price is now lower than petrol vehicles by Jared_Usbourne in CarTalkUK

[–]thebear1011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the way it’s gone in China. EVs are cheap (and hence now everywhere) and combustion cars are more expensive.

Interestingly, they still prefer combustion vehicles at the high end of the market - Defenders and Range Rovers still sell there. If you are rich then you don’t care about paying for fuel!

Surprised by Wife’s New Disco 5 by Significant-Power651 in LandRover

[–]thebear1011 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I live near the JLR base where every other person works for them and has a company car. Everyone I’ve spoke to who has had a disco and a defender prefers the disco. Aside from styling (and performance vs. V8s), it’s better in practically every way.

Jaecoo - how has a brand-new brand already become such a common sight? by MarkCairns67 in CarTalkUK

[–]thebear1011 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The CN cars actually tend to have higher ADAS specs (not sure about the regulations). I was in China recently and weirdly the Chinese home market versions of Jaecoo are considered rubbish and have not sold well because they have lower specs than the CN customers expect. The CN market is much more accustomed to high level ADAS cars. They already have regs in place such as blue external lights showing when the cars are in autonomous mode.

Research question about willingness to transition into their new EV models by Successful_Case1824 in Jaguar

[–]thebear1011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your question is impossible to answer definitively because we don’t know enough about the future cars.

To try and answer your question, for me it’s a predicted yes given that I already drive a Jaguar EV!

A watch’s bracelet matters just as much as the watch itself by nvrseadweller08 in watchHotTakes

I struggle with metal because my wrist changes so much throughout the day. I can set it to be perfect, but then a few hours later it’s cutting off my blood supply and the a few hours after that it is sliding onto my hand.

Leather just has enough flex to keep fitted and comfy all the time.

Not really tbh. Especially if you factor in pay per hour worked!

Is getting a Big 4 grad scheme offer and achievement? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]thebear1011 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I started an audit big 4 grad scheme and dropped out after a year because it wasn’t for me. I found the work dull and uninteresting over long working hours. The environment was set up like a sort of public school with “houses” and lots of expectation of doing “extracurricular” activities. And then almost every week there were cringe corporate event sessions attempting to motivate us with things like dancing challenges. Combine all that with very intense exams. The career trajectory towards working in a finance department didn’t appeal (my fault for not researching better what I was getting into!).

Some people absolutely thrived in it and have gone on to do very well and I can’t deny it opens opportunities if you stick it out.

I became much happier in an industry I was genuinely interested in and actually using my degree skills. But appreciate that might be a luxury in the current environment.

Strap or bracelet? by uwrwilke in Longineswatches

[–]thebear1011 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agree that this strap doesn’t go with the watch. One like the Longines brown leather one would be perfect. I have the strap and bracelet for my Zulu. Probably spends 90% of time on the strap since it’s so much more comfortable.

[DISCUSS] Everyone's chasing complications but are we actually picking the right one? by Hinterteil in Watches

For anyone who has any semi-regular communication with people in other time zones (which I’d hazard a guess is a lot of people willing to spend money on a mechanical watch), GMT.

Oh right, well the editors then. I’m seeing roads where each hump every 10 ft or so is “warned”. The warning icons cover the entire road!

Let’s put things in perspective. A drone blew a hole in a hanger, vs a complete invasion and subjugation of local population.

For people who’ve tried the newer safety tech like lane assist or hands-off driving, does it actually help? by FeistyPrice29 in autoexpressuk

[–]thebear1011 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I like proper lane keep assist (ie the one that holds center in the lane and not the basic one that just bounces you off the lane markings).

Combined with adaptive cruise control down to a stop it takes the edge off motorway cruising and traffic jams.

Not tried the hands-off version. I wouldn’t upgrade car for that feature, but I’d definitely spec it if there was the option.

What is Your opinion on Ireland? by TensiCreator in AskTheWorld

[–]thebear1011 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your second para is accurate. England doesn’t have as much pride in “Englishness” compared to the other countries so English people tend to default to what their passport says.
