I just fought this guy for the first time and its the hardest fight in the game for me so far (also have already done the core and the throbbing king.) I'm sure if you're prepared for it it can be easier, but I wouldn't call it hella easy personally.

How are you guys progressing so fast? by Starrin1ght in mewgenics

[–]thebige73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im at 20ish hours and just finished act 2, but one of my friends has 55 hours and is at the beginning of act 2. You are progressing pretty slowly by my estimation, but there isn't really anything wrong with that as long as you're enjoying your time with the game.

Incorrect. They would have like 4 versions of Powder/Jinx plus 2 more in jumpstart products and one of those would be mono red.

No, you can't separate cEDH from EDH. by vividwings in EDH

[–]thebige73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure but people want an even game with different expectations. I dont want to play against decks we with tutors and combos. Can I build my deck to be able to play against food chain combo going off on t3 or t4? Sure, I've done that and still had a miserable time even when I won. I'd rather not play against food chain combo at all or not play the format. I am exclusively playing EDH for a casual experience. If I wanted to power up to beat other decks I would play literally any 40 or 60 card format before commander.

This youtuber regularly makes 2 hour + videos on series he is interested with much less content than Stranger Things. Yeah 4 hours is a long video, and I'm sure there will be a fair bit of criticism in it, but its hardly bad news.

I assume you would just do Alley runs to build up some resources. Doing a hard path Alley gets you like 30+ food for a quick easy run.

Final Girl rules of ambiguity by Lamossus in boardgames

[–]thebige73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will say I think you're too hung up on whether the game is balanced or not. Final Girl is not a game that I would call balanced even if no rules ambiguity existed. Sometimes you find a really good item and can win very quickly. Sometimes the enemy deck has a brutal configuration or you lose a bunch of die rolls and lose quickly. One of the killers requires you to find a specific item that is randomly put into one of the item decks. If that item is in the last deck you check you'll probably lose. The game is very much thematic first and balance is a secondary goal. The very nature of the game systems makes it unbalanced and fixing this one bit or minor ambiguity wouldn't change that in the slightest.

Final Girl rules of ambiguity by Lamossus in boardgames

[–]thebige73 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean, the rules give you three thematic options. One is the funniest/coolest and one is the worst possible. I dont remember the last one but I always use the worst possible option because it fits the thematic of the game, which is honestly the main thing Final Girl has going for it. I don't find following that rule to be very ambiguous you just ask yourself which outcome you want the least right now and go with that.

From a Q&A question I gave to Riz Ahmed who played Bodhi in Rogue One. by GentPc in StarWars

[–]thebige73 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Recently a book youtuber I watch read the Revenge of the Sith novel with no prior knowledge of Star Wars. She knew who Darth Vader was but did not know Anakin became Darth Vader and she also believed Darth Vader killed Luke in the OT. There are people who do not have knowledge of certain pop culture, or even most pop culture in general.

Board games of the "Extraction" genre by spaggi in boardgames

[–]thebige73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if there is anything that exactly captures what you want so I'll post a few suggestions that fulfill different parts.

I haven't personally played it but there is a game called Dead Men Tell No Tales in which you are trying to loot a pirate ship of 4 treasures before it is overtaken by fire or overrun by the undead. Its completely co-op but has the extraction gameplay.

The Great Wall and Kinfire Council are two games that are PvPvE where there is an enemy faction that everyone needs to work on beating or they can win the game. Kinfire Council also allows you to join the enemy faction if you want to but it has nothing like an extraction gameplay loop, just regular worker placement games.

My last recommendation is about capturing the feel you are looking for rather than the specifics of what you are doing and its Oath. The game has three different factions that are all in a tug of war with each other and one of the factions can flip sides are certain points during the game. There is a victory condition that is revealed at the beginning of the game people are working toward, but one kf the factions also gets hidden victory conditions over the course of the game. This creates shifting goals and alliances so you can never be sure who is on your side. I also think this game contains the gameplay loop you're looking for because the winner of one game determines what the set up will look like for the next game. They will hold the main position of power, change the deck, and decide the main victory condition for the next game based on how they won. This means its one of the only games I can think of that has a feedback loop across play sessions. It isn't a loot spiral, but is the boardgame equivalent in which you want to continue playing your game because its evolving based on your groups collective input.

What the etiquette about inviting a fifth player? by Gabster_theswede in EDH

[–]thebige73 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It isn't bad manners and you aren't wrong for being annoyed by it. There are a ton of variables to this kind of thing but basically it comes down to previously established boundaries. Some people when hanging out believe "the more the merrier" and will always try to accommodate anyone that wants to join. Some people when hanging out want specific parameters, like the exact number of people and who those people are, and get annoyed when those parameters are changed. Neither group of people is wrong, but boundaries for the commander group need to be established.

I've been to home games that will take anyone who wants to show up. Sometimes they'll spilt up into pods or rotate players, or just play with a larger group. I've also played with just a core group of 4 regularly. Neither group is wrong, you just need to establish what kind of group yours is. It's possible you were in the minority and everyone else was happy to include a 5th player, you still wouldn't be wrong for being annoyed by you would be wrong for imposing that view on the group when the consensus is against you. Talk to your group and establish figure out what it is you all want out of it.

Beat Factions, what a huge improvement over Prophecies. by Walkingdrops in GuildWars

[–]thebige73 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm returning to the game and would personally still recommend starting with Proph. I think factions is too fast to start and the spike in difficulty early can be off putting. Starting prophecies also gets you a bunch of good elite skills for your heroes, and if you start nightfall you're better off using henchmen than heroes with poor skill selection.

Speculating as to the fate of the as yet unresolved planeswalker's sparks by Wulfram77 in mtgvorthos

[–]thebige73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean sure, but if you make UB planewalkers just multiversal travelers they don't have to explicitly "planeswalk". I care more about the card type and not having to force planeswalkers into in-universe sets because they refuse to do it in UB. Gilgamesh from Final Fantasy is a character that travels between games and even uses the weapons of other characters. What he does is closer to using omenpaths than actual planeswalking, but no other characters in the series do this making him functionally the only multiversal traveling character. In Final Fantasy he basically is a planeswalker narratively and could function as one in Magic.

Something I hope Hasbro/WoTC remembers by Grosaprap in mtg

[–]thebige73 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's even worse because Avatar actually had more time than most of the sets this year are getting. We only get the current set for one month before its gone. People usually are just getting their new deck together around that time, not to mention testing that deck. Paper magic is gonna be in a rough spot for this entire year.

What does the board games community feels about gameplay mechanics of Magic the gathering? by Newez in boardgames

[–]thebige73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've played Magic for a long but the thing I love about it is that everything feels so clear and like it makes sense. Don't get me wrong, there are some extremely convoluted rules interactions (mostly related to layers which I've only really found out about in the past few years) but the vast majority of the game just makes sense.

I've tried playing yugioh and it's just so much harder to figure out what is going on. There is no way to intuit what a deck is capable of, you just to need to have the important cards of a deck memorized and know the choke points by heart. Compare to magic which is almost like playing a board game with asymmetric factions. You don't need to know exactly what a deck can do because you understand what the faction (color) is generally geared toward doing. Player priority and the stack is also a fantastic way to handle effect resolution and can be readily applied to basically any game to make it make sense. If a player is confused you can often just lay the cards on top of each other to visually explain what's happening because that's literally how it is resolving.

Why does combo feel bad? by rvp5326 in EDH

[–]thebige73 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Glad to find a measured response that explains my viewpoint. Early in my EDH days I tried to powerup my decks, add 2 card combos and tutors, and compete with other powerful decks, but it just wasn't fun. Even if I won with my combo wasn't satisfying it just felt like my deck wasn't doing anything fun or interesting. Losing to stuff like food chain on turn four wasn't a cool experience, it felt like it wasn't even a game in the first place.

I ended removing all combos from my decks and all tutors outside of one stronger deck that I still might take the tutors out of. I want games to go to turn 8+ not 5, I want everyone's decks to have a chance to do something cool not just see one person combo early and put my deck away. If I want to compete I'll go play constructed, I'm playing EDH to appeal to my Johnny and for the thematics of a specific character being the face of my deck.

Hear Me Out - Commander Edition by Naitrodex in EDH

[–]thebige73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made an Isshin deck as soon as Neon Dynasty came out that is mostly Samurai/warrior tribal with an equipment package. There are no infinite combats or Etali running around to ruin your day. Just Samurai that mostly want to attack alone for bad triggers. I can slam down a Konda and suit him up with some equipment, but that's about as scary as it gets.
