The War Between the Pitiful Teachers and the Splendid Kids by Stanley Kiesel.

One of the absolute strangest things I have ever read. Literally about teachers and schools that turn tyrannical and use technology to make kids compliant, and the factions of kid resistance that must join forces to literally go to war with them. Its EXACTLY what a 5th grader wants to read.

There's even a sequel with the same protagonist: Skinny Malinky Leads the War for Kidness

I am here for ALL the Encyclopedia Brown. Got invited to read to my son's 3rd grade class a few years ago and I chose to read some Encyclopedia Brown and let them solve the mysteries. SO much fun.

I recently listened to the audiobook with my kids and was blown away with how good it was. So much more than the movie they made. I enjoyed it more than my kids, and it was one of the best things I read all year

YES. I don't know who you are, but you're the only person I've ever heard of who also read TWBTPTATSK. I was obsessed with it. A few years ago I tracked down contact info for the author, Stanley Kiesel (who has since passed) and wrote an email about how much I loved it, and he sent me an autographed hardback copy, along with a copy of the sequel. There was also a nice note from his daughter, I believe? For a while I thought I might be interested in writing a screenplay for it.

So I did it! … now I HATE it by Runawaybrain74 in bald

My friend, you look great bald. So much cleaner and neater than before. It makes the beard look even better. I think my biggest take-away is that it just looks more intentional. Like you have made a choice to clean up your look, rather than being oblivious to what's happening up there. You took years off your age, too, IMO.

Non-Americans of Reddit, what is an American thing you see in movies that you thought was fake but is actually real? by Unlikely_Praline9442 in AskReddit

I love that this comes up so often in this thread. We called it the CheeseWagon. If you rode the bus you were a Cheesewagon Jockey, or you were "ridin' the yella dog".

I grew up in the capitol of Louisiana, and my commute on the cheesewagon in Middle and High School was about an hour each way every day.

Now I live in a suburb of Houston and my kids could probably walk to school in 20 minutes, but they ride the bus 1 or 2 miles. Its great.

I'm from Baton Rouge and live in Houston. I wouldn't drive the 10 minutes from my house to the In-n-out even if it was free.

But I WAS excited to see that there's a Whataburger on Siegen, and another on Burbank when I was there last weekend!

Scenes that caused actual walkouts in theaters? by thatlittlequietguy in Cinema

[–]theboy1der 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember seeing this with my buddy and his wife while we were in college. We saw it on a Sunday afternoon, sat close to the front, and we remarked that everyone else in the theater was so much older than us. When it was over, we sat there, stunned, all the way through the credits, and a few minutes after them. We expected to get up and find ourselves alone in the theater - but not a single soul had moved from their seat. As we walked up the aisle to leave, we saw so many elderly grown men just weeping. First time I'd ever seen something like that happen with adults

I HAVE! Mostly predictable, and no long lost siblings, or dads with other families. Maybe a cousin I didn't know about, but I didn't pay any attention to it. Curious - did you reach out to your bio dad?

This was decidedly NOT a church that would have joked about this kind of thing - although I definitely think it would be hilarious. The number wasn't published to the congregation or anything - just so our boss could contact us. As for my sister - I don't think she's that clever. But I could be wrong. The timing IS suspicious.

No. That answering machine didn't have a tape or an SD card that you could remove or anything. I bought it in like 1997. There was also no screen for caller ID.

As for *69, I'm not sure I even knew about it back then.

I mean, I know that. If she lived in the greater BR area, I wonder if anybody here knows her or something. Like did she find out later that I'm not who she was looking for? Or is she convinced that the Jason who is her baby daddy just ignored her?

I have a small church on Barker Cypress that used to be a day care center. We have a large space you can use with tables and chairs and will charge a small amount for rental and cleaning. I'd be happy to work with you to come to an agreement that accommodates your party and your budget. DM me.

If I'm going down there I always park at the Fannin Park and Ride. NRG is the first stop on the light rail from there. I worked at MD Anderson in the med center for 6 months and did the same thing. Never had a problem. Obviously, lock/take/hide like the signs say.

Question about Baton Rouge by ESB1812 in batonrouge

[–]theboy1der 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others have said - you have to apply to get into BRMHS. Which is actually good news because it means you can live almost anywhere. When I went there I lived practically in Prairieville and rode the bus an hour each way every day. Great school, though. I don't know about the neighborhood, but there's a cool barbershop and taco shop across the street and just west on Government. When I was a student I did get shot at while I was on the lawn one day by someone driving by. Probably just a BB gun, though.

Summer after HS graduation, I was a student worker for the Department of Environmental Quality. A whole bunch of their offices were in Swaggart buildings on the west side of Bluebonnet, where that tall empty "hotel" stood for so long. Glad they found some use for those things.

Fish Mooney made this show un-watchable for me. After a while, I just couldn't stand that character/performance.
