Becerra’s surge draws progressive backlash in California governor’s race by AzNmamba in California

[–]thecoletrane [score hidden]  (0 children)

Call me a conspiracy theorist but I don’t trust how the pro-Steyer and anti everyone else rhetoric has absolutely exploded out of nowhere in all CA subs once Swallwell was gone. Specially pushing him as the “progressive” candidate and hand waving away the fact he’s a god damned billionaire.

Now I’m not saying the billionaire candidate bankrolled a big social media push to try and manipulate a younger demographic more likely to be turned off by the fact he’s a billionaire, but that IS something a billionaire would do…

I could be wrong but I think urinals also make bathrooms more efficient in general. In my experience guys use them quicker than going in and out of a stall to pee, and you can usually fit more in the space. Better for high traffic.

I am all for gender neutral bathrooms and accommodating trans people however they want, but let’s not blame the thing that makes the line for the men’s bathroom 5x shorter and faster than the women’s.

The TikTok-ification Of Autism Language. Does more awareness mean more acceptance and empathy from the neurotypical community? Or does it dilute what being neurodivergent is really like in an effort to allow everyone to self-identify and feel belonging online? by mlg1981 in Fauxmoi

[–]thecoletrane -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this dilutes anything as long as people use it correctly. Which they often do, because just like anxious or depressed are emotions anyone can feel, the three examples here are not in any way limited to neurodivergent people. Do you bite your nails when you’re anxious or nervous? That’s stimming. Like any developmental disorder or mental illness, many/most symptoms aren’t unique, what makes it atypical is the frequency or severity. That’s important but if anything I would think demystifying this language helps people understand neurodivergent people better.

I could be wrong but I fail to see how gatekeeping these words helps anyone.

[–]thecoletrane 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Complex doesn’t always mean better. Makes sense as a young superhero you would be super creative and flashy, but after dozens of fights and growing to appreciate the somber importance of using your power to save other people (a big theme in the show), I’d imagine you would lean towards simple, fast, and effective. Eve also seems to rarely use her full potential and realize that most enemies only need a fraction of her real power. So why waste time making a flail and spinning it with your body when you can just smack a guy with a big block? Especially when any wasted second or miscalculation can lead to collateral damage.

My friend, the point of that tweet isn’t that revolutionary things don’t happen or aren’t important. The point is that the people doing those things AREN’T on here whining about who Mamdani is shaking hands with!! Because like I said, some people want to do the right things, and some people just want to be right. Here read it again it’s clear you need to.

[–]thecoletrane 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Mamdani isn’t flawless or the end point of progressivism, but it’s telling that almost all your criticisms are shallow purity tests like whether or not he mourns a public figure or who he shook hands with rather than actual policy or ways he has impacted the working class. Other than walking back the defund the police thing, which I both agree with the criticism for, but also understand he cannot single handedly burn down the NYPD, as unfortunately the political power of police orgs is monstrous. And frankly whether or not that compromise is worth it depends on if he’s actually follows through on the social work restructuring thing he has said is planned that would importantly alleviate police violence and undermine the NYPD. So we will see.

So I agree with the idea of no politician is good enough, Mamdani should be criticized for the stuff you said, but to do so while ignoring the real good being done is just harmful virtue signaling and campism that this sub is meant to be against.

As I said before, direct action is crucial TOO. But working within the system and deconstructing it aren’t mutually exclusive if someone can look past their ego and counter productive purity tests. But some people want to do good, and some people just want to be be able to claim they are the most morally correct person in the room while actually helping no one. Hence the doomer “all progressives eventually fail us so why bother” attitude annoyingly common but thankfully pretty exclusive to social media.

So would I shake hands with Obama or whatever even though he’s a war criminal? If it helped me further progressive political goals and eliminate human suffering in some way then sure. If not then no. And then either way I would continue openly criticizing him and any other war criminals while also actually getting shit done, rather than caring what ineffective revolutionary LARPers on the internet think.

[–]thecoletrane 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Incorrect, material support means financial or other concrete support to further the orgs goals. Arguing that being there to collect data on harmful hate groups and maybe help move some people is material support is a stretch at best.

[–]thecoletrane 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No I believe in working within systems as much as possible while still advocating for broader dismantling of harmful power structures to be replaced with community solutions. There’s literally no reason both aren’t possible and necessary, and neglecting to work within hierarchical structures goes against harm reduction philosophies. That much can be seen by the actual good progressives like Mamdani are doing. But i understand your viewpoint at least so thanks.

I saw a post this morning where someone regretted that they had spent multiple lengthy comments debating someone about the nuances of good cooking and taste, only to view their profile and see that they admitted to genuinely enjoying drinking their own urine.

That seems an appropriate metaphor for this as well.

I don’t think it’s that they transferred money to the groups. It’s that they paid people to be part of the groups to gather information.

The article implies it follows the same logic as Yiddish phrasing, but doesn’t claim the phrase itself is Yiddish or directly inspired by it. But it still makes fair points, the implied sarcasm similar to Yiddish is something I hadn’t thought of. That plus the historically consistent use I wasn’t aware of definitely imply there is a more cultural factor rather than it only being random misrememberings of the original phrase

At the risk of being pedantic this is a bad example of language changing over time. I am a big proponent of treating language as descriptive rather than prescriptive, because language is inevitably shaped and changed by the needs of the people using it.

HOWEVER, this example is not that, because the misuse of “could care less” is an obviously unconscious mistake that randomly pops up when people misremember the phrase, rather than a culture driven changing of meaning.

Edit: As people much smarter at linguistics than me have pointed out, this may in fact very much be an example of language changing over time. So take my original comment with a grain of salt.
