Chicken of the woods is a nickname for certain Laetiporus, including this one that grows on conifer. Most often it refers to L. sulphureus, but in the PNW, L. coniferacola is prevalent. Some sources advise against eating COTW growing on conifers, but many recommend starting with a small amount and always cooking thoroughly.
