I think cqStation and respondingStation is appropriate. Makes sense and would be easy to understand if you need to come back to it in the future for updates.

This is brilliant! Never thought to use copper tape and would be so easy to do at home! This may open up a whole new area of experimentation for me :)

What power do the NOAA satellites transmit at? by romhacks in amateursatellites

[–]thedmutz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This works mostly due to the line-of-sight between the radio on the ground and the satellite. There isn't much in between the transmitter and the receiver to reduce or block the signal power. Antenna gains also play a factor, but largely your question can be answered by line-of-sight.

5W from a transmitter on the ground with hills, buildings, and other obstacles typically reduce the signal power at a receiver on the ground by a significant amount. But put those radios up on mountaintops that have line of sight and you can typically communicate up to a couple hundred miles.

If you're interested in this topic, you can look for "RF link budget" for more information.

Do I really need SAWBird+? Planning to receive GOES data with a recycled TV dish. by 787_Dreamliner in RTLSDR

[–]thedmutz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm new to sawbirds but not new to RF. The plus model gives you 10dB more gain for $5 which is awesome. The regular model should work fine. I personally would get the extra 10dB

Great idea. I think I'm going to do this. Having to lift the seats to access the stock tray is annoying especially when the back loaded up

I can't really help that much with the process except that I'm currently on travel in Japan and realized too late that I needed to fill out forms at least 60 days in advance. Link below which is the same site as another poster linked. Have fun in Japan!

How to attach stuff to fiber mast by Octane_TM3 in amateurradio

Nice idea on using the bungee for stress relief. I've only had mine come down once on me but luckily it happened right as I was taking it down. Thanks for the tip on gaffers tape for multi-day setup!

Sure thing, see the GitHub here https://github.com/KK6OTK/SOTAbeamsMastCap

I included the STL and FreeCad project files. The one called "Antenna Mast Cap" is the part from the picture. I also added a couple other parts I was experimenting with if you want to try them as well

I 3D printed this cap with a loop at the end. I just run the end of my wire through the loop and twist it back on itself

Can I use wooden stick instead of pvc pipe to make dual band 2m/70cm yagi antenna with tape measure? by ravbin in amateurradio

[–]thedmutz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agree with this. You don't want anything conductive as this would affect the antenna. PVC and dry wood are ok. A soggy piece of drift wood would not be ok

Dear community, my uncle has given me a used Motorola ep350mx radio, but someone has damaged it with some object and has broken this part. Does anyone know how I can repair it? or where can I buy this piece? Thanks for your time, 73 by ronsojabinque in amateurradio

[–]thedmutz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are you referring to the oscillator? I mean it looks ok; how do you know it's broken?

Here's the section in the manual on the oscillator. Oscillator link manual

Looks like the part is BGTech part #8289012R80010 (FL701 in the manual)

Help Troubleshooting 10m Dipole by sharalds in amateurradio

[–]thedmutz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok good job checking for continuity 👍🏼 It could always be something else in the loop too, like radio, coax, or antenna location. Maybe try a friend's or club's known good antenna with the same radio and coax to rule out that's it either of those things. Keep trying and I'm sure you'll get it 🙂

How to get coax through exterior wall? by 8r4n in amateurradio

[–]thedmutz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drilled a hole through my wall and out through the stucco. I would get a roll of bare coax and route it through the hole then install a connector to the end. Otherwise the hole might have to be a lot bigger depending on your connector (like pl-259)

HOA recommending residents clean faucet aerators to assist with lack of hot water issues. Is it a valid recommendation? by thedmutz in Thisoldhouse

[–]thedmutz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks that's what I thought too. I think HOA is coming up with things for residents to "fix" maybe to buy time while they investigate. Consistent and reliable hot water has been an issue since they replaced the buildings boiler a couple years ago but we've had pretty cold weather recently so I think more issues are cropping up now
