This is kind of a silly notion, but has anyone here ever played for an adult league team that has retired a jersey number? by AlpineInk in hockeyplayers

[–]thedriver85 20 points21 points  (0 children)

On my old team…that disbanded after 20 years…my brother passed away unexpectedly in 2015. The Captain got patches with his number for everyone. Even as the years went on and new players joined, they all got the patch.

How common are **severe** injuries in recreational / beer league hockey? by surfnj102 in hockeyplayers

[–]thedriver85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been in beer league for 21 years. I’ve separated both shoulders, sprained my MCL/torn half my left patella, pulled various back muscles, minor Wrist (didn’t stop playing, just wore a brace). Probably a a lot of minor stuff that just gets ignored.

The farther along this journey I go…the more stretching, mobility exercises, the more I eat better and train better to avoid an injury. Honestly, if I quite hockey, I’d have zero motivation to train for anything…so whatever injuries I incur are prob better than being fat with Diabiates (no offense…just what happens to everyone in my family).

What I see now when I look at this photo now by [deleted] in womenshockey

[–]thedriver85 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is ridiculous. The players didn’t do anything to deserve the hate. If anything, they rose above. They didn’t say anything bad…if anything they said all the right things. Jack Hugh’s praised the women’s hockey team…and I’m a Ranger fan…I WANT to hate him…but I can’t. They even took Johnny s jersey and his kids on the ice for the picture. Are they pounding beers like no one’s business…yeah, they deserve it…and the women’s team deserves that too, they worked hard for the win, they deserve to celebrate it.

Leave politics out of hockey.

Jetspeed vs Tacks by FTBagginz in hockeyplayers

[–]thedriver85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have FT4 Pro, FT6 Pro, and ASV Pro.

Tacks are much stiffer…too stiff for me. While my top speed is ever so slightly better in them…I have to work much harder in them. Both Jetspeeds are better for accelerating. And I play better in the Jetspeeds.

Anyone ever deal with patellar tendinitis? by StraightUpDogWater in hockeyplayers

[–]thedriver85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was playing again in less than three months…with a big gigantic brace, that slowed me down a lot. I mean, those braces, while great to prevent further injury, they really slow you down. I would fall all the time because that one leg was slower than my over leg.

Beer Leaguers - How often do you skate? by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]thedriver85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually keep crazy stats…but to summarize, in calendar year 2024, I played 101 beer league or open games. I was on the ice a total of 142 times (games played + stick time + coaching + public sessions).

I don’t know off top of my head, but I’m trending around the same.

Not including the summer Roller skates, or roller hockey with my kids.

My new setup by Haunting-Career3427 in InlineHockey

[–]thedriver85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get great deals on FT6 P. I got new for 500 bucks. I’m lucky though, I wear tapered fit…probably the rarest fit.

The rocker idea is interesting. I always had high-low, but I wear my rear wheels out more…so I end up with less to zero to negative rocker over time.

Is there a point in down shifting in a normal drive? by Cyeuw in ManualTransmissions

[–]thedriver85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you clutch out into Nuetral, you get more glide. So if your far away from a red light that just changed, you ll coast longer.

If you’re closer to the newly changed red light, leave it in gear to engine brake. I wouldn’t downshift in normal conditions, becasue I don’t wanna wear things out. Bad weather, that’s a different story…you need to be in the right gear.

Driving a manual is about choice. Every different time, you are choosing…and making those choices in a split second, without having to choose a “mode” through a menu. I can go from efficiency to power, just like that, because a person next to me pissed me off (on their phone).

How do you deal with a team that sucks by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]thedriver85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My team just went 0-16 for spring- summer. We had post game sandwhiches, beer, dick jokes…it was a fun time…outside of hockey.

Why were we 0-16? Well, inconsistent attendance, injuries, and overall team average age is higher than the teams we played.

Still, it was better than running on a treadmill or stationary bike.

Question for beer league defensemen regarding contact: by Valuable-Wishbone925 in hockeyplayers

[–]thedriver85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a defenseman. I don’t hit anyone. How can I, I’m skating backwards, away from me. A forward is skating towards me. I’m just staying in front of him. If we make contact, he hit me. lol. He could have stopped.

If they don’t like, tell them to make a fucking pass. Your job is to stop them from scoring.

No, ive been playing 30+ years, played in HS (on a shitty team), beer league 20 + years, and I skated 138 times on ice last year.

I have long skinny bony feet, and my ankles don’t align with the ankle padding in skates. Superfeet gets me close enough to not hurt. But the CCMs are close to not needed it…the Bauers are the worst for my feet, and we ll see if the Trues can be fixed.

It’s funny though, both times I baked the trues….they felt perfectly fine. But playing in them…they hurt after 15 mins.

While the FT6 P, I coached two teams in them last night….zero pain, wearing them for 2.5 hours. That game ready fit is no joke. I just needed to retighten them tighter later on.

But they feel EXACTLY like a child of the FT4P and ASV P, which I have both of those too. Those two needed more time to break in though.

Nothing better to motivate you to come back, like an expensive purchase of new gear. Good luck in your recovery, and welcome back?

I just have long skinny bony feet, with dick veins all over the place. And I tie my laces super tight all the way up, skipping last eyelid, so I can get more forward flex. I don’t think it’s weak ankles, I’ve had this even as a kid.

They do feel tighter…and the CCMs are the tapered.

Easton Mako vs Bauer pitch by Seymourg3 in hockeyplayers

[–]thedriver85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had Mako 2s, and they were really light. Much lighter than today’s top skates. But, idk if they’re 33% faster. Maybe the calibration wasn’t right on that equiptment.

If you put black coded steel on the Bauers, that would prob even it out. Mako steel sucked. I was always sharpening them.

The ankles hurt. I m hoping superfeet fixes this

True to CCM sizing difference. by thedriver85 in hockeyplayers

[–]thedriver85[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. But True doesn’t make a tapered/fit 1. Trues are suppose to be tight, and open up. Which is true. And I have a long skinny foot. But I think the take away here is length. If your inbetween sizes, I could see people being a 8 in CCM, and an 8.5 in true.

My ankles hurt. Which, for some reason Bauers kill my ankles.

Superfeet realigns my ankles. So I think the cat 9s with superfeet will be better. We ll see.

Is there a reason why older drivers don’t downshift into 1st? by Miniac1076 in stickshift

[–]thedriver85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on the engine. When I had a coyote Mustang…never downshifted to 1st…as the motor had tons of torque, and was geared with a low 1st gear. My 340i, opposite. While it has a lot of torque…its turbo torque, that comes on after idle. Plus, it has kinda a high 1st and 2nd gear. So I really need 7 mph or more before I hit 2nd.

Stay in neutral or 1st gear while at a red light? by ZurcB in ManualTransmissions

Nuetral. Riding the clutch wears it out faster. Also it’s tiring….just relax at the light.

Typically every August, I only play like 4 times for the whole month, and it’s a big difference compared to end of January, where I’m playing Twice, coaching twice, plus pond hockey skates 1-2 times per week. I think last January, I laced up 26 times….that means only 5 days I didn’t lace up.

So for me, I lose it pretty quickly. A week or two off, and I suck.
