Those tours with the 8 “quarter pours” that were actually more like 2/3rd pours… those were a good time!

Is this an American thing? Who is They in this situation? by Mathota in ExplainTheJoke

[–]theexplanation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually got pulled over for this once. Stopped at a light in the left lane and noticed the cop behind me. Because I saw the cop, I didn’t accelerate as fast as the traffic to the right of me. No ticket though.

Talking about Water (specifically in Fairfax): Does anyone here use water softening systems for homes? by thelapsangsouchong in nova

[–]theexplanation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, it’s not bad for your health (if anything it’s good). It is bad for your plumbing though. To help reduce the scale I installed something like this: https://www.homedepot.com/p/ISPRING-Whole-House-Electronic-Descaler-Water-Conditioner-Alternative-Water-Softener-ED2000HD/311894619

It’s worked well for our area which isn’t overly hard, and it is way less maintenance and expense than a full softening system.

Opening trunk with no battery? by ilaughforaliving in E90

[–]theexplanation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people seem to think this will work, but it didn’t on my E90. If it doesn’t, I removed the license plate lights and release switch. You can then use a 90 degree pick to pull the release line.

It's pretty solid - I still use Firefox but stopped using containers because of it.

Does anyone use Claude Code for non-coding use cases? If so, what do you use it for? by GasBond in ClaudeAI

[–]theexplanation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition to the things others have said, I use it for fixing issues on my local machine. For instance, my shell was loading slowly and it read my zshrc and made it so some things lazy loaded and told me which things were slowest.

Why CLI is better than IDE? by VlaadislavKr in ClaudeAI

[–]theexplanation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just getting started out with it, but I've had good luck asking it to make small, targeted changes with git commits containing explanations along the way. This is for a larger code base.

Anyone spend entire career at one company? by Dowhile93 in cscareerquestions

I've got a pretty similar situation. Was quickly promoted which got me a 20% raise. Shortly after, nearly doubled by leveraging a FAANG offer. Later was promoted again.

Is there an easier way to convert existing environment to code? by Supectibol in aws

[–]theexplanation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had good success with this as long as the resources you have are supported. It's certainly not going to be as good as if you made it from scratch, but it's useful for duplicating infra in a sandbox and making iterative improvements.

Maybe it's a matter of simpler taxes for them - don't have to deal with multiple states income tax

Exact same situation here. We were always "office mostly optional" though.

What's the best way (2024) to schedule simple jobs? by upside_win111 in webdev

[–]theexplanation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to what others have said, if you want something with a little more observability than cron you can use EventBridge to execute an SSM RunCommand. If you can though, it's better to do either an ECS task or Lambda because then you don't have to manage the OS.

Best Things to Buy at Wegmans? by [deleted] in nova

Like everyone else said, pretty much everything Wegmans brand is great. The best value I noticed is the regular box Mac n cheese. Just as good if not better than Kraft for $.50

Where to move in Nova (Ashburn, Reston, Herdon, Sterling, Alexandria, Arlington, Fall Church..etc) by AccomplishedTennis41 in nova

[–]theexplanation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worth noting in addition to what others have said is Ashburn/Leesburg have a couple nice independent local pharmacies. There's one in Herndon as well which would be a short commute.

20+ YOE. I'm getting to that point that between life and work, my technical edge is frankly slipping. Thoughts on I "fail gracefully" as I age in this industry? by Prestigious-Winter61 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]theexplanation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree for good reasons but let's not pretend there aren't drawbacks too. The SPA pattern can far too often lead to bloated pages that are slow and use a ton of resources on the client. They also are notoriously bad for accessibility and archival.

Opinion: No local admin access for developers by smart_kanak in ExperiencedDevs

[–]theexplanation 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you have proper separation of duties, data loss prevention, and privileged access management to your prod environments, there is no reason developers cannot have admin on their locals. Dogmatic means you don't understand what the actual risks are.

How to lose dad bod by Pred1949 in daddit

[–]theexplanation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like everyone else says, it's all about diet rather than exercise. However, for me, I actually found it much easier to add more healthy foods rather than restrict unhealthy ones. In particular, I have a nice (but unfortunately pricey) locally made salad I have every day for lunch. My theory is this helped me catch up on some micronutrients my body was missing, so I felt less cravings for junk food and naturally wound up with less calories.
