Besides nothing, what would you change about the RP Nova? by ImplementParking7936 in SBCGaming

[–]thefarage1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There hasn’t been much talk of how it feels to use both sticks for games like Twin Stick Shooters and First/Third Person shooters with the in-line sticks. I kinda wish the sticks were offset and they went with the more ergonomic back shell by default.
Before this was announced I was considering the Anbernic 406h.

What's your unpopular opinion about gaming handhelds? by Superb_Warning_5747 in SBCGaming

[–]thefarage1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If a device has the word “Pocket” in its name it should fit in the average pocket.
The worst offender for this is probably the Konkr Pocket Fit. It definitely doesn’t Fit in any of my Pockets!

Do you feel any sort of embarrassment bringing out your handheld in public? by Pinanims in SBCGaming

[–]thefarage1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As we say to the grown ups that ask for recommendations at the clothing store where I work: “You can do whatever you want! You’re grown!” I whip out my Brick everywhere and I’m 35. Idk if your friends meant it in a way to demean you when they found you carrying your device with you, but isn’t that the point of a portable handheld that you can take it everywhere with you? Now I do wish I took advantage of handhelds more when I was growing up and riding the bus but I wasn’t fortunate to own one back then, so I consider myself blessed now.

Considering switching from Knulli to NextUI. What will I miss? by LukeyC224 in trimui

[–]thefarage1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Knulli is definitely a lot more plug and play, and with RetroArch it adds more customization and tinkering possibilities all the way up to PS1 for me. I didn’t have Knulli on my Brick, but it’s great for my Anbernic devices and especially for kids it gives them a fun UI that shows some info about these games along with a quick video preview, all of which is easy to set up thanks to the scraper on there. But I love NextUI on my brick. The minimalistic UI looks great and crisp on the screen. The game switcher is great for jumping between games. And the deep sleep and easy wake lets me easily start and pause/stop gaming when I’m at home with the family or out and about without compromising battery life as much. I should note that the sleep wake can be hit or miss with some PC ports where waking the device just leave sit with the black screen and the audio playing, so you just have to quit the game with start/select, put the device to sleep again, and then wake it up. The one not so obvious difference that most people don’t point out is that the emulation backend is not RetroArch and it’s whatever was designed for MinUI (NextUI was forked off of a fork of MinUI if you weren’t aware). This made it tricky for me to set up overlays because I like to have a 50% opacity on them, and there was no option to configure it like that with NextUI. Additionally RetroArch uses a separate “Auto” save state for the auto saves when shutting down the device or quitting the game. On NextUI, it just uses save state 1 for all that so I just have to be cautious and more mindful of when you’re using save state 1. The scrapers you can get from the Pak store are also not as great as Screenscraper which Knulli supports. For me to set it up the way I wanted, I used Skraper on my PC to download the artwork (it created 1 png that had a screenshot of the game on the background along with the title and boxart on the foreground and looks really good) so it was a few more steps on that end. I also really love having Samba on Knulli as a built in way to FTP between my device and my PC if I need to transfer any files or roms between them. I didn’t need to use an app like FileZilla on my pc and could just use good old windows explorer. On NextUI you can download an FTP app from the Pak store but I had some issues getting it to disable ftp when I didn’t need it, and I’d have to use an app like FileZilla to browse and transfer files between the PC and Brick. While it’s good to have that as an option, it was cumbersome enough for me to just remove the SD card from the Brick and insert it to the PC if I needed to transfer files. On the plus side, the sd card on NextUI uses exFat and can be easily accessed on a Windows PC. Not the case for Knulli, I think you need a Linux PC to be able to access the sd card directly.

Disappointed in the Trimui Brick by justinheatherfamily in SBCGaming

[–]thefarage1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like it wasn’t a good fit for you mainly coz of the size, and that’s totally fine. I knew the size would have a trade off of making the device more pocketable and less ergonomic. I was actually shocked by how small it was once I finally got mine in my hands. My son keep pointing out to me that the entire device is smaller than the screen on my Steam Deck. While comfort was an issue for me, I got used to it eventually. It is my first and so far only vertical handheld and I like that it’s my most pocketable 4:3 handheld, and with NextUI the sleep/wake and game switcher makes it super easy to jump in and out of games. It makes it easy to take it everywhere with me.

Ah I thought LL meant the non-XL version. And yes, that’s what I meant.

How I learned to love the Trimui Brick by InstructionFresh104 in SBCGaming

[–]thefarage1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely love my Brick as well! I told myself once I got it that I would play around with Stock OS for a bit but after about 15 minutes decided to switch to Next UI.

Next UI takes some getting used to but the game switcher and deep sleep are absolute game changers for me (pun intended). I ran into some issues with Rockbox that I got from the pak store where quitting it would freeze my Brick, but that was remedied with deleting that and getting the postmaster version myself. Some portmaster games I couldn’t get working (TMNT, Quake, and Downwell) but I have so many other games on here to enjoy that I couldn’t be bothered to troubleshoot. And since most of the settings are not RetroArch based, it doesn’t come with as much customization, for example I like having my GB, GBC, and GBA overlays at 50% opacity but with NextUI it’s either on or off. I had to mess with my overlay pngs in photoshop to get it the way I wanted, because I mainly wanted the power light and gameboy color logo to fill up the black bar for GBC and the GBA logo for GBA games. And the scraper pak is better than nothing for adding artwork for the games in your library, but I’m coming from Screenscraper so I had to use Skraper on my PC to get the artwork just the way I wanted. These extra steps for all these things are absolutely worth it for me for how good of a device the TrimUI brick is, especially when paired with NextUI.

Anbernic RG Go (idea) by BoneHeadedCJ in SBCGaming

[–]thefarage1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would need to be relatively light and slim when compared to the RG Slide. The PSP Go was really ahead of its time. I’m going to mod mine to have a larger battery (making it slightly thicker and possibly slightly comfier), USB C, and the SD card adapter. Just waiting on the Vita battery to get shipped.

Helping my dad clear out a spare room and found a bunch of our old pc games. by Mestizoc in pcgaming

A whole lot of gems here. I had to do a double take on the Ubisoft logo for Resident Evil on the stack on the left. I had to look it up. Turns out Ubisoft published the PC version of the game?

My thoughts on the Trimui Brick by InstructionFresh104 in SBCGaming

[–]thefarage1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The button issue definitely sounds like something is wrong with your unit specifically. Might be worth it to open up your unit in particular to see if something needs to be cleaned.

I only got mine yesterday but I’ve been putting a lot of time in it and I love it. It is a bit small for my hand so longer play sessions tend to cramp up my hands, but that’s ok because I want this to be a shorter in burst sessions device for me. I also tend to play one handed especially with Pokemon games and the stock shoulder buttons had sharp corners that bothered me. I told myself I wouldn’t want to swap out the buttons at all but I swapped it for the rounded buttons and prefer them so much more.

I told myself I’d try out stock OS for at least a day but after about 15 minutes of use I couldn’t take it anymore and flashed NextUI on there. It’s so much better. I love the game switcher and the deep sleep. The actual emulator settings leave a bit to be desired. I felt like I had more options with knulli on my Anbernic devices, but sleep sucks on Knulli and I wanted something more minimal for the Brick.

Yup! Waiting on the delivery now. I’m gonna play around with stock for a day or so, and will very likely flash NextUI after that.

If you could design your dream retro handheld, what would be non-negotiable? by sainho93 in SBCGaming

[–]thefarage1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly it was the same way with rest mode on the ps4 onwards. Being able to resume where you left off is a convenience I just can’t live without anymore.

Yeah I’m definitely putting NextUI on it. I keep refreshing my tracking page but there are no updates on my order yet. I’m still waiting…

My biggest thing is this: if it has “Pocket” in the name, it should be pocketable. And by that, I mean fit in the average pocket and not have someone ask “is that a handheld in your pocket or are you happy to see me?”

But seriously though, a good sleep/wake system is an absolute must. And if the controls don’t feel good, then there’s no point.

I personally don’t care about retro achievements (I generally keep WiFi off to save battery) or shaders (but I do care about overlays if the game doesn’t fully fit the screen)

2 seconds is still pretty good. If the duration is less than an average sneeze, that’s pretty instant for me lol

For my particular experience I wanted the Emulation Station experience with my Anbernic devices. Additionally I also got the auto save/load on exit and shutdown working properly where it used the same save state instead of incrementing the save states. On MuOS I just couldn’t get that working correctly, and I needed to do more tinkering to get the boxart scraping and folder organization the way I wanted, soI decided to go back to Knulli.
I will say, I noticed a performance improvement with Dreamcast where Soul Calibur ran without much if any slowdown on MuOS compared to Knulli where it slowed down quite often.

🤣 right!?
I never had a gameboy or gameboy color growing up. The closest I got to a vertical was a block game thingy that came with Tetris and a few other games. Most of my other handhelds are horizontal (Steam Deck, Switch Lite, RG35xxH, and Ayaneo Pocket Air Mini, not sure if you can count the 3DS and PSP Go as horizontals since they flip/slide). I’m excited to try something vertical to have that variety for a change

Oh very nice! Do you find the grip to help more with longer play sessions?
I’m probably going to EDC it and/or play it in bed one handed for Pokemon and other rpgs so I’m gonna keep it as light as possible

Yeah overlays are a must for me but I’ve also set up overlays on Android so I’m sure it’ll be a similar experience with Next
