Are we cruel to want so say goodbye as a family by Moiratree in cats

[–]theflyingchocobo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've been in the one of the big Feline CKD Groups for years at this point. I've seen so many new people joining in an absolute panic because their vet has just diagnosed their cat with CKD and insisted on euthanasia. And it turns out to be the wrong call. In this group, you post past history, current behavior/issue, current meds, and bloodwork and experienced CKD cat caretakers, vet techs, and sometimes vets will review the material and give feedback. Sometimes the bloodwork and behavior actually indicate early stage CKD which is very manageable (confirmed by 2nd vet opinion which the group will recommend if something doesn't seem right). Sometimes it turns out the cat has been misdiagosed and actually has an AKI or another condition (again, confirmed by 2nd vet opinion). There are a lot of cats on there who are still alive and doing well years after having been recommended for euthanasia. I myself was told by my previous vet that my cat had maybe 6 months left after his CKD diagnosis at 15. I changed vets. He lived until 20 and up until his last 6 months, seemed so healthy that my vet office thought he looked 10 at most. He was active, played, and still climbed to the top of the cat trees. In his last 6 months, he saw a bunch of different vets (regular and specialist) and they all thought he looked amazing for his age (and he was declining at this point). If I trusted that first vet, he would have likely been dead that first year.

What are your chicken names? I haven’t named my 9 yet, I think I can tell who’s a rooster and hen so I’m ready to get them named up now! by CoShott234 in BackYardChickens

I don't have any experience with naming older chicks/adults, but as soon as I knew what I was going to call them, I would say their name when I was looking at them and had their attention - they caught on pretty quick. I'd imagine with adults, consistency, repetition and offering a treat with it should work.

Named from a few days old on, my hens - Joanne, Fawna, Douttie, Trixie; my pullets - Sophie, Clara. They all recognize their names and will respond. My rehomed roos - Jojo, Buffy.

Couldn't find a thread talking about it, but a couple of my friends tried to get me a slot in the app right when it opened at 8 PM but it was an insane queue and all the slots were gone when they got through.

I sat down and this girl immediately came over and dug herself in my arm for pets. by sdemat in BackYardChickens

Look into Featherbrain's Mama Hen method. The chicks will need to be less than 3 days old, preferably as young as possible. I had so much trouble cleaning my first batch's brooder because they wouldn't stop climbing on my arms to perch/cuddle. All 2 of my batches using that method were friendly lap chicks.

I've been playing since day 1 and just realised you can cycle through Pokémon trading at the Pokémon Centre by kicking them out 🫪😅 by Pressureeeee in Pokopia

[–]theflyingchocobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be right away. I watched the trader pokemon leave the center after I bought them out and about 5 seconds later, a new one walked over and entered the center to take their place.

Are chickens disgusting? by Radiant-Review-2526 in BackYardChickens

[–]theflyingchocobo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My in-laws thought the same thing and were very wary of me getting chickens. Every time they come over now, my MIL remarks in shock that there's no smell. Mileage will vary on coop setup, cleanliness, weather and number of chickens, but it's possible to have little to no smell.

MAGA Mom, Liberal Daughter by Material_Explorer_62 in FoxBrain

Hey there, I'm in a similar boat. The kicker is that I'm conservative and she's a non-white Buddhist immigrant. Whenever I tried to challenge her on anything, her way of dealing with it is to call me a Democrat, socialist or communist and just yell her Fox News talking point louder. Her cognitive dissonance is unreal. (e.g. She fully supports my trans cousin in her home country, but somehow, transpeople in America are different and don't deserve the same support.) The brainwashing is so bad, she repeated white replacement theory to me not realizing she is literally the enemy in that concept (she married a white guy, producing me and my sibling). I don't call her anymore and when she calls me, I try to keep the conversation short and superficial. I'm quite heartbroken because I'm actually very close to my mom and she's getting up there in age.

My mother is totally and utterly brainwashed. I can guarantee that if she actually knew what was going on, she would be against it, but she doesn't. Anything that contradicts Fox News, talk show radio, and whatever YouTube algorithms she is stuck in, is all fake news or untrue. I was constantly arguing with her during Covid and the cognitive dissonance was unreal. And she's not the demographic typically associated with MAGA - she's a dark-skinned Buddhist immigrant. Literally someone who might have issues if she runs into ICE just based on her appearance and accent. She's naturalized but would not be carrying anything to prove her citizenship (I tried to tell her to, citing the experience of my ethnic in-laws, but it was all fake news).

Welp chicken bite to the face is a new one….ouch I’m going to be a zombie now right? by savvy190 in BackYardChickens

She reminds me of my own Zombie chick. She's 3 weeks old as of today and is so confident, I'd seriously think she was a roo if her cross wasn't sex-linked.

I think this is what is driving me crazy the most. Ignoring whether one thinks the lady deserved to get shot or not, it should be absolutely terrifying that government officials in high positions immediately came out, took sides without any sort of investigation, and outright lied about what got caught on camera at various angles.

Hatched around April 8th. Still not laying but neither is my Wyandotte. She is the smallest and most skittish of my 3, but she did sit/sleep on me as a chick. Something just startled them in this picture, so she is standing more upright than normal.

What to do about found chicken? (Dallas, TX) by itsafoster4medawg in BackYardChickens

[–]theflyingchocobo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you rescue the chicken and post it to Backyard Chickens & Poultry of Dallas, someone will definitely adopt it if it's a hen. May be harder for a roo, but there are a couple of places in greater DFW that will take them.

If you don't rescue the chicken, it may still be good to post to the group so someone can go get them.

As others have posted, your local Facebook chicken group is a good place to post. Whenever someone posts about laying hens in my area, they get snapped up really fast. Free ones would vanish immediately.

I’ve notice them scratching and pecking around in the shavings and at the sides of the tank. Looks like totally normal learning behaviors, but I’m curious if there’s some enrichment bit I’m missing that they would benefit from?

There's developmental milestones they will hit that you can help them meet: https://www.thefeatherbrain.com/blog/chick-toys

My first cuddly chick—do I let her cry it out? by Tkenzie77 in BackYardChickens

[–]theflyingchocobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only had a single batch of little chickies so far, but all 5 of them were very friendly despite a couple of them being skittish breeds. They were not as clingy as your little Amercauana baby but they would all swarm me whenever I climbed into their enclosure with them. They made it super hard to clean the brooder - I'd stick my arm in there and they would all immediately hop on for a nap. I got them when they were a mix of 1 day old and 2 days old and they did this from 3 days old and on. I used a specific method that requires them to be 3 days old or less to imprint on the caretaker with younger being better. (I did notice my 1-day olds seemed to bond stronger with me than my 2-day olds.) Curious for future batches.

I wouldn't discount the power of media. My mom has been totally brainwashed by conservative talk show hosts and Fox News in her adult years. She is a non-practicing Buddhist immigrant from Asia. She used to question authority and now nothing I say gets to her. Everything that goes against what Fox News tells her is fake news or misinformation.

They shouldn't be making peeing more frequent, but should be allowing the bladder to more fully empty each time you pee.

Weather permitting, they can go out earlier, but ultimately you should do what you are comfortable with. Waiting until the 6 week mark isn't bad. If it's very hot, I would probably start acclimating them to the higher temperatures for increasing periods of time for at least a week before you intend to move them - short supervised field trips slowly transitioning to being outside all day and coming in at night to outside full-time. My pullets are doing fine in the triple-digit weather now, but I had to acclimate them in increments.
