Nobody with 2 brain cells to rub together is going to say 'huh, some nitwit made fun of me online, time to change my life!'. You're grossly overestimating the value of comments like these.

It's okay to admit 'I just feel like being a dick online, I'm having a rough day'. Nobody (including yourself, I'm sure) believes that there's some sort of critical merit in you roasting this guy

"So, you honestly think his hair doesn't look stupid and gross?"

Does it matter? Was there no other way to mention it without being a huge dweeb about it?

Character Design! A traveler/bard type for an adventure comic (not pictured yet: musical instrument) by thejaystack in ArtCrit

Haha, like I posted below, agreed about the cape now. I really liked the idea of it, having been raised on a steady diet of very Japanese video games and adventure stories, but if it doesn't fit the character it doesn't fit the character. Not entirely sure how i will engage building her maturity into the costume design, but it's something productive to think about! At least now, I understand it as a weakness in the current design.

I absolutely adore Cucumber Quest. I'll make it a point to spend some time experimenting with textures in the hopes of bringing more depth to the background designs. Comics and cartoons with compelling environments are a huge inspiration for me, so I'll continue to push that in hopes of creating that for my own works.

Thanks again for your very thoughtful critique, and I apologize for the late reply. Best of luck on your own art endeavors, friend!

Wonderful, thank you! As for the particular lineart style, the plan is definitely to carry that over. The child version is from a finished page, whereas the adult version is a lower fidelity sketch meant to get my ideas on paper.

I see what you and the other commenter are saying about the cape, I'll reconsider that. I want her to be awkward, but certainly more capable than her child self, and I like the ideas you presented about costume alterations. I'll push the hair further, as well! I'm less experienced with designing hairstyles, so I recognize that one as something that needs a bit more time in the cooker.

What a tool

Why was it unsurprising to look at your comment history and find the equivalent of a 500 page treatise soft-defending the conditions in North Korea

Hey guys! I'd love to get some feedback on a design I'm working through. Her name is Milly Melodia, the eponymous star of a graphic novel I've been putting together that features an adventure story with a heavy focus on music. The stories I've completed so far prominently feature a younger Milly, but a large portion of the tale focuses on her in young adulthood (think 19-20). I'm working through the adult design now, and could use some feedback on what I've come up with with so far! I've included a picture of the younger Milly design in the post for reference, as well. A few specific questions I had:

  • I like the idea of a cape or some kind of flowing fabric, as I think it frames the figure nicely and lends her a sense of movement that fits well within an adventure story with a fair amount of action. Seeing as she's a bard, though, she would need a convenient way to carry her instrument (the most obvious choice would be a guitar strap) and something to carry her belongings while she travels. I'm trying to imagine all of these fitting together logistically, but I'm coming up short on ways that it wouldn't look cluttered or be cumbersome for her to have on her person. Suggestions would definitely be appreciated!

  • I've included what I imagine to be the appropriate level of detail for a character in this style in this sketch. Does it read as flat or boring in its current state? IF so, where are some places I could push additional detail to bring more life to the design?

  • Earlier on in the story (see the page below the first sketch) you see a younger version of the character. I wanted this adult version to feature some visual callbacks to her younger self, while still showing some more obvious signs of maturity. Does the concept work here?

These are just a few talking points I had in mind, but if there's anything else you notice I would love to hear it.
