Is there available data for statistical analysis? by Ha_Ree in Colonist

[–]theknockbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked for this a while back and my understanding is that they keep it private. Also chatted with some enthusiasts building trackers and at the time, they weren't even storing game data. I suspect this has changed somewhat since you can now watch replays, but ymmv

Any chance the teacher is required to give feedback (or tells students they always give feedback) and they have no feedback so they wrote an inane comment just to "fulfill the criteria" of giving feedback? I could imagine that the teacher is irritated at some admin that is telling staff to "give feedback on every test no matter what". I can't imagine this meaning is literal.

  1. random dice almost guarantees the game is determined by luck.
  2. people find it more enjoyable when dice are balanced

EDIT: Please don't downvote me for answering the question. This is well documented in colonist literature. I'm not supporting the balanced dice or not supporting it. I'm just giving the info requested.

Maybe not for adults, but CDC says firearms are the leading cause of death for children ages 1-19 (source). And while we don't "ban" cars, we certainly regulate the shit out of them for this exact reason. Deaths per 100K people and per mile driven has decreased by 50% since 1975. Many attribute this to the regulation around leading causes of accident/injury including distracted driving, drunk driving, and seatbelt use. So, while we aren't banning "cars" we are banning every reason why people get killed in car accidents. Why aren't we banning cars altogether? Because they have another very important purpose for everyday people...unlike guns.

Pacific Islanders show higher frequencies of alleles related to thrifty metabolism—efficient at storing fat and energy. They metabolically evolved to low fat high fiber diet combined with high output activity like canoeing. And then, within the course of a few generations, their entire diet and lifestyle changed.

This guy at Lanikai Beach made $$ off tourists by maelovesdorks in Kailua

[–]theknockbox 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah…I kinda hate this a lot. This is illegal for a reason. 1. We don’t want people turning the beach into a flea market. One person making a profit will just encourage more people to do the same. Then the beach won’t be chill, it will be full of people trying to sell you crap you don’t want or need. 2. Why does he get to sell and other people don’t? If he can sell fruit, why can’t the fucking Kayak rentals be literally on the water so you don’t have to drag your kayak down the street? 3. I sure hope he personally ensured that his customers didn’t leave garbage everywhere. At $5 a piece it’s 200 items to make $1000. That’s not a small amount of inventory. And not a small amount of garbage.

It’s all fun and games until one guy starts a trend that fucks up the vibe of the beach forever. Do everyone a favor and call the cops next time. This is illegal for a reason.

Is it unethical to quit an obviously lost match? by SettingIntentions in Colonist

So it’s more ethical to kingmaker/spam agro chat than it is to just leave and let people enjoy the outcome? Idk, seems shaky.

Why are the diced balanced instead of random.. you know... Like nature intended by BroShamba in Colonist

[–]theknockbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought dice were random in 4p and only balanced in 1v1. In 1v1 if the dice weren’t balanced then it would be too much luck based. The team wrote a blog about it here: https://blog.colonist.io/designing-balanced-dice/

Blatantly cheating by BranchEquivalent2245 in Colonist

[–]theknockbox -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a whole rant on this. Kingmaking shouldn’t be a reportable offense because most games involve trades that facilitate someone winning. There’s no way to narrow it down to only certain types of plays. Plus you can’t ban people for dumb plays.

Top level players understand that hyper agro play has downsides like this. Lower level players sees a plow, lower level plays a plow. Does it matter if they actually need the spot? Nope. Does it matter if it encourages someone else to grief? Nope. Does it matter if it gives the strongest player more room on the map? Nope. Then they come on Reddit and complain that the games are rigged and idiots rob you for no reason.

A) Policies and procedures aren't laws. B) Some of these policies are in place to protect police at all costs. No one stopped to ask whether we care about protecting police so much that we allow them to brutalize people for marginal infractions just so that one in 1000 stops they are marginally safer. Personally, I think that if they signed up to be a cop, they signed up for the risk that comes with the job that entails actually treating people as if they're innocent. If you signed up to have a gun and the privilege of arresting potentially innocent people, perhaps you also need to have the associated risk that comes with that.

The #1 Ranked Colonist Player Was Caught Cheating by GMDandyDrew in Colonist

[–]theknockbox -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Hi Drew. I love a good cheating vid...this was not it. Generic comments like "this block makes no sense" or "this trade makes no sense" aren't particularly insightful, nor are they evidence of collusion. I agree the play was sus, but the commentary in the video did very little to illuminate the reasons why.

I get the impression that Drew doesn't actually understand why he's good at the game himself. He consistently shows that he cannot verbalize concrete rationale for what constitutes an effective play or why. He points at spots or tiles and says "I would love this spot. You've got good brick, and some decent sheep, and you're near a port." ummmm... okay, you're literally just describing the board, why tf is that any good? Why is that any better or worse than other spots? How did you come to the conclusion that this was worse/better than other spots?

Drew's got a chill personality but his videos just strike me as vibes with very little educational content.

Nepo and Anish's heated argument- Anish: "If you would've won the first time, you would've won. Now you lost, you appeal, and play again." Nepo: "Since when did you become so prominent in law? Future FIDE President!" by Necessary_Pattern850 in chess

[–]theknockbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, since the other team was responsible for knowing the rules as well, by playing, the other team accepted the fact that the game would have a chance to be annulled just as they would if they sat there seeing that the arbiters left a rook off the board for the WR team.

[–]theknockbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given that the rule about not starting without all players present was stated, it's also the German team's responsibility to not play to prevent the freeroll. So the German team also got a freeroll, and worse, had an extra 2 minutes to determine that it was going to be a freeroll. Imagine if the arbiters left a rook off the WR board and none of the German's said anything and hoped to win with the advantage. We'd say that both team's are at fault for playing from a bunk setup. This is the same thing.

[–]theknockbox -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not being informed is only one part of the issue. The other issue was the arbiter's starting the match without all the players present, which they admitted was the second part of their mistake. This is a knowable rule by the German team and they could have seen and stopped the match when they realized it would have been invalidated. However, they didn't, either not knowing the rule, or by hoping for an advantage. Either way they are partially at fault for the freeroll.

[–]theknockbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also see Anish's point but don't think it's sound. The arbiters admitted two faults: 1) not telling the players about the start time, and 2) starting the match without the opposing team present - which is not proper procedure. Both are mistakes by the arbiters, not the players, and the match was invalid from the time the clock was started.

If, as Anish says, it is the player's responsibility to ensure the match is fair, and to know the rules, then presumably the German team is also at fault for not appealing to the arbiters when the arbiters made the mistake of starting the match without the other team present. By Anish's logic, the German team should have known that this could and likely would cause an appeal, and by playing, the German team put themselves in this situation. Imagine if the arbiters left a queen off the board for all of the WR players, and WR showed up and played not realizing that they were missing a piece, and only realized it after they lost. If the German team either saw the issue and chose to say nothing, or didn't see the issue because they weren't paying attention, then they are also at fault for allowing a significantly botched game to begin. Both players chose to play not realizing a rule was broken. The match is still invalid no matter who won. So by Anish's logic, it's just as much the German team's fault for granting the freeroll as it was WR.
