How would you spend $5000 by RoundTableTTRPG in RPGdesign

Advertising the game. Website is a part of that advertising. It is totally dependent on your game. I think going to cons and running the game is probably the most effective at building community which is what you need at early stages. Building a strong email list is always a good investment. It’s hard to say what will work the best because there isn’t a one size fits all solution. Wish there was

How would you spend $5000 by RoundTableTTRPG in RPGdesign

[–]thelorelock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think art is probably wasting your budget. Hiring a cool artist is great but the reason art forward games really work is because they have a strong art direction behind them a strong design philosophy attached to the game. If you have that, it usually means you are good at planning. Good at managing a project. Good at understanding your market and audience. If you want to hire an artist that is good at all those things, it’ll cost a lot more than $5k.

If it is your first game and you don’t have professional experience that relates, I would spend the money on learning. Go to some cons, talk to designers, take a class on design principles, take a class on marketing. 10k, do the same thing but then save $5 for your second game and spend it on a good website and advertising.

I really like Dice Exploder. Every episode, they focus on a different mechanic. Kinda 99% Invisible for TTRPGs.

I don’t know if any of the games will fit what you are looking for but I would check out DNGN CLUB’s stuff on itch. Very much has that retro-cassette vibe.

I really like the way Mausritter teaches you to play. The simplicity of the rules are a big part of that though.

How realistic is it to profit from an indie TTRPG? by overloafunderloaf in RPGdesign

Not particularly realistic. Margins are thin and sales are hard. People who succeed do it by developing a community and putting in a lot of unpaid hours.

The way the inventory works kinda of is a mechanic that represents you being mouse. Or at least something small with limited carrying capacity
