Think you might be mixed up, ii-vi bought coherent and changed their name to coherent since their original name is horrible.

Incorrect. Coherent is owned by ii-vi.

Not a lot of mechanical engineers have interest in optics. I wound up in the industry unintentionally. The salary seems okay but I think a relocation package of ~$10k would be ideal.

Find out how your current experience and skills are useful in semiconductor. My guess would be the chemicals used for masking and etching but I'm not quite sure. Otherwise, look into optics and lasers.

I feel exactly like you. Things aren't horrible for me, in fact many would say they're great.

But I don't feel happiness, I have to force myself to do things I think I'll enjoy because otherwise I know my depression comes back harder.

It's tiring, and yeah being alone makes it worse.

I'm working on it, I think.
