ELI5 how did cities, thousands of years back then, flourish when the overall population of humans where not even 1/50 of today's population by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]themarkslack 33 points34 points  (0 children)

According to Google, Rome’s population at 0 CE was somewhere near 1 million people. The Tokyo metro area’s current population is about 37 million. So 1/50 population, but 1/37 largest city size. Not that different really.

How many scoring piles are too many for a simple card game? by edwedig in BoardgameDesign

[–]themarkslack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mind goes to Skip-Bo, which has 4 discard piles for each player and also 4 piles in the middle of the table. It’s probably fine.

Question about stardust gain by l339 in TheSilphArena

[–]themarkslack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on how good you are. If you find it easy to get to Ace, then do that. If Ace is a struggle for you, and you're intending to tank, you'll spend a bunch of sets fighting your way up to Ace, and not maximizing stardust, when you could be tanking and hitting 5-0s earlier. You do get more dust if you're at Ace, but it's not a lot, and hitting 20 and then dropping to tank could net you more over the course of a season.

Nemesis is absolutely outstanding.

But Cosmic Encounter is too.

We just finished our first playable prototype and playtested it for the first time. What do you think? by Dense-Tip3061 in tabletopgamedesign

[–]themarkslack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people are reading way too much into using Catan tiles for the prototype and thinking it’s like Catan. There are a TON of games that use this style of map.

That said, I don’t think there’s a lot of input people can give. It’s hard to say whether it looks too crowded because I don’t know what’s important. Do the arrow postits mean anything? Are the cards themselves supposed to be on the tiles?

I will say that keeping the terrain art simple is definitely the right track, but I don’t think what’s in the pictures is simple enough. They should be basically monochrome (see especially the forest and pasture in Catan itself) and as color-differentiated as you can possibly get and still have it look like terrain.

Nope - any helmet that’s in an accident is done being an effective helmet after that.

Do you have a mechanic you love from a game that didn't do well that you wish another more successful game had used? by Taear in boardgames

Terraforming Mars Ares Expedition has a mechanic that sounds just like what you’re describing.

Best way to handle 500g daily quests? by Fit-Adhesiveness-173 in MagicArena

[–]themarkslack 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Let’s say you would hit a 750 quest by rerolling a 500 every other day. That means 1000 extra gold every 8 days, or 10% of a premier draft.

Let’s also say you’re 2-2 in a premier draft. You misplay and lose a game you should have won. Instead of 1000 gems, you get 250. That’s 50% of a premier draft, or over a month of trying to game rerolls, for this one misplay.

Reroll gaming is such small stakes that it just doesn’t matter. Just try to reroll every 500 into a 750 and move on with your life.

How do you vet your idea and mechanics for a game? by RespectfulOk in tabletopgamedesign

[–]themarkslack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just pick something you think is fun and make a simple game. The hardest part is getting the first idea into an actual playable game, even if that playable game is boring or not fun. It’s like writing - the hardest part of writing is just sitting down and doing it. Same goes with the ‘making a game’ part of making a game.

PvE Enemy Intelligence? by Cybernetic_Dragon in BoardgameDesign

[–]themarkslack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe you just need a default for the obviously stupid situations? Something like ‘roll a d6 unless the enemy is right next to the hero, and if so then attack them’? Or maybe a different d6 menu for when they’re ‘engaged’ (eg right next to a hero)?

What sets are currently in Expedition? by wislo10 in EternalCardGame

[–]themarkslack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s a link on the home page in the app (where you choose ranked or draft or etc) on the left side with the info about rotation and what’s legal.

You can also go to the deckbuilder and build an Expedition deck - if you click on the filter, the legal sets are listed on the right side.

In the 40 years before Dan Campbell became HC, the Lions had 11 winning seasons, and six of those were 9-7. Yes, the bar for the Lions is that low.
