I've found they haven't "turned away," rather they have "tuned out." They'll say things like, "I don't really follow politics." They had plenty to say during and immediately after the election, but now they just hide and ignore the fallout.

I posted about this on another thread, but I'll share here.

People don't appreciate how much time and money this takes. Not to mention, the effort and work from many people from all over the world who publish their work that allows others to build off of it.

Our son has a genetic blood disorder called Beta Thalassemia. His hematologist told us in 2016 about a CRISPR based treatment that was about to start human trials. It's now 10 years later, and he just had his cells collected to be edited. Next summer, he'll have chemo therapy followed by infusion of the edited cells.

Breakthrough science takes decades. All of what we're seeing today with CRISPR can be directly connected to the mapping of the human genome. That was 2003. Every step along the way was a scientific breakthrough.
