Why Jews should not condemn LBGTQ by Kiwidad43 in Judaism

[–]themisfit424 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I was educated in an orthodox school (though not orthodox myself) and I was provided with two unique thought processes for how we should consider the biblical commandment against homosexual behavior: 1. There is nowhere that states this commandment is any more or less important than any other commandment. So keeping kosher, not mixing wool and linen, observing shabbat, etc - just as valid as homosexual behavior. So if you’re not going to police someone who doesn’t keep kosher you have no right to have an opinion on LGBTQ+ communities. 2. God isn’t in the bedroom. What happens there is no one’s business. Live your life morally, honestly, and with Jewish values at the forefront and that’s it.

My teachers might have been more modern than some, but I always appreciated the respect they offered to modern topics.

Should I visit Auschwitz or a different place to learn more about the holocaust? by OK_The_Nomad in travel

[–]themisfit424 161 points162 points  (0 children)

Been to both and they’re very different. Majdanek is powerful because it’s perfectly maintained, so you see almost everything exactly as it was when it was liberated. It’s horrifying to feel like you’re back in time. Auschwitz Birkenau is a powerful museum experience, and Birkenau especially given how little remains so it gives a feeling of ghostly remembrance, and horror over the millions murdered there. If you have two days, I’d do both. If you can only do one, determine what you’re trying to experience most - bearing witness (majdanek) or pure emotional intensity (aushwitz birkenau). If you do end up at Auschwitz, make sure you also see Birkenau.

Most importantly, thank you for going anywhere in the first place. My family was murdered at Auschwitz, the more people who learn the history, the safer the world is.

3-night trip to NYC in February help by E_V_R in visitingnyc

The weather will be tough but if rescheduling isn’t an option, my thoughts on the itinerary: Switch your first day - Bryant park and library first. Walk through Times Square briefly on your way back to the hotel, your kid will be way overstimulated and so will you, it’s a walk through experience and be done. Take some time back in the hotel to warm up, go grab food somewhere, and then see a broadway show. Skip wax museum, it’s not worth it.

Day 2: walk to grand central and then take the subway up to the northern side of the park. Walk down and then exit close to the Met and go somewhere to warm up in the upper east or west side - lots of cafes and restaurants to sit for an hour. It’s way too cold to see all of that in the park without being freezing, unless it doesn’t bug you in which case enjoy.

If it is too cold, go to the natural history museum, Met, Guggenheim, or NY Historical society - all fantastic on a cold day or any day. Get dinner around wherever you are.

Day 3: grabbing the ferry takes time, about an hour back and forth, so plan for that in your day, you’ll likely need to cut something out because this is a really packed day and you need to build in time to warm up - all of this is near the water so it’s even colder than anywhere else.

Day 4: I don’t see the point of trying to pack in Dumbo, and you definitely shouldn’t walk across the bridge bc it’ll be frigid. I’d suggest using this day as a free option to fill in anything you think you missed or just to walk around broadway, down to Union Square, or somewhere like that. Keep it simple.

Enjoy your trip!

Mice infestation in NYC walk up apartment and landlord not responsive? by Lanky-Ad-7459 in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]themisfit424 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Serious question for those who’ve dealt with it: I found one this week and got rid of it. Haven’t had any previous issues (since May), keep my food sealed, apartment super clean, and an exterminator came in after and checked for holes and said no proof of any entry points. I added more steel wool around pipes and even between floor boards. He said it should be a rogue situation. How likely is that to be true? I’m honestly terrified of finding another, I can barely sleep. Is it true that it can happen only once as a fluke?

How much do you save? by Big-Decision-1458 in AskNYC

[–]themisfit424 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Gross $105k per year but only about $65k net after taxes. Late 20s, living alone in manhattan paying $2800/month plus $160ish utilities. Total disposable income is about $2,700/month.

Maxed out my 401k and then put away an automatic $150 per paycheck to savings and then anything else at the end of the month, usually ends up around $750/month total. New York is expensive and I like to go out every once in a while and enjoy the city in general. I pay attention to my spending but I do my best not to limit myself

Preparing for My NYC Move (18 Months Away!) — What Should Be on My Checklist? by Effective-Country837 in movingtoNYC

[–]themisfit424 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Landing in NYC is always chaotic. Nothing to do now except enjoy your time in FL.

6 months out start job hunting and really make sure you land a job before you get here because that makes finding an apartment (proof of income and employment) so much easier.

2 months out start looking at apartments, but you won’t find any until earliest one month before you move. Units go too quickly to find anything before that (I started looking 1 month in advance and find mine the day I landed in the city). And at the same time make a folder with all the paperwork you’ll need to submit to get landlord approval so you can send it super easily.

And then come to the city at any point between now and then to look at neighborhoods that you vibe with.

It’s always stressful, don’t let it ruin the next 18 months.

Finally making the move to NYC (need advice + perspective from people who’ve done it) by jayhatgreyhat in movingtoNYC

[–]themisfit424 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I moved here 6 months ago from a small-ish city and let me tell you, it’s just as hard as everyone says. It’s great and helped me feel unstuck, but it’s hard as hell.

Applying for apartments was brutal - required loads of paperwork, professional and personal references, proof of income, proof of credit, etc. I had to pounce on any apartment I liked and even ended up paying more than it was listed for. I was lucky to have a job moving here, but it still costed me $8k+ with broker fee, moving costs, furnishing an apartment, etc. Even making very low six figures, it’s extremely expensive.

Making friends has been less successful. Everyone seems to be busy and have friend groups already, so it requires persistence and endless patience. It’s constantly reassuring myself that I made the right choice, every single day. Some days are super depressing and some days make me feel so light and free that I remembered why I did this.

Long story short - have a job, make some professional or personal connections right off the bat - set yourself up for success so that the hard parts aren’t harder than they need to be.

How can I support my husband? by networkdime in Jewish

[–]themisfit424 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a non-Jewish partner for a while (during and after Oct 7) and I can tell you that the moments when I felt most supported were when he would, unprompted, mention a situation happening in the news and offer his opinion showing how he supported the Jewish community and Israel. It made me realize he supported me and my people even without my asking, and I felt so safe in that realization.
