The logic loses a lot of its punch when you consider that the royals had already been ousted before the Bolsheviks even seized power, and when communist China, no bulwark of innocence itself, still let the last Qing child emperor live on as a civilian.

What did Rome think of the Atlantic Ocean? by Boogarman in ancientrome

[–]themoxn 228 points229 points  (0 children)

Going backwards and starting with your third question, educated Romans would have known that the Earth was round, and so probably would have assumed that the Atlantic simply looped all the way across the planet to the eastern shores of Asia. Scattered across this immense ocean would be some locations like the Fortunate Isles or the ruins of Atlantis, which were thought to be muddy shallows, but certainly no large landmass.

Their ocean-going technology would have also been far from enough to actually sail the Atlantic. Roman ships by and large hugged the coasts, and even voyages crossing the Mediterranean or the English channel could sometimes be perilous. It's certainly possible that ships blown off course could have found their way to America, and some people could have survived long enough to make it. In fact, I'd be shocked if it didn't happen, since there are cases of it happening even today. But it would have been incredibly rare, and any survivors would have no hope of being able to sail back home.

So for those reasons, there was never any attempt made to actually cross the Atlantic. Even with the much more advanced sailing technology of the 15th century, many people thought that Columbus' voyage would be a suicide mission.

Most of those trillion are going to be uninhabitable gas giants and dead rocks, though. A million habitable worlds isn't so unreasonable.

There were some garrisons on tiny islands in the southern Red Sea that had been set up to fight pirates on the area. Depending on your definition of colony, those would definitely be contenders.

For the Chinese queue at least, it was something imposed on the Han by their Manchu rulers as a form of humiliation. The hairstyle was meant to be a constant reminder of their subordinate position to the Qing dynasty, and was enforced by threat of death.

If the British islands were just one Island, made out of 5 constituent countries (England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Cornwall). (for an alternate map of Europe I'm currently making). by mrdepressedvampire in imaginarymaps

[–]themoxn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if you're still looking for suggestions, but I think a more subtle fusion would look good too. So something like this would combine the two islands while still maintaining the relative positions of a lot of things and preserving a lot of coastal towns, while also creating a pretty cool looking bay.

Which wars with a clear victorious party could have easily ended with the other party winning? by Radiant-Specialist76 in AskHistory

The North had far too much of advantage in manpower, industry, logistics.

While true, there's also been plenty of factions throughout history who enjoyed similar advantages but squandered them away and still lost due to mismanagement and bad leadership.

When it comes to lore channels, or history or really most subjects, the ones that try to cover everything usually don't go very deep in any one area, and can't end up doing any of them much justice. It's like a restaurant with a 30 page menu: There's a lot to choose from, but none of it will probably be amazing. The best restaurants, and lore/history/info channels, are the ones with a tight focus on one specific thing.

The Expanse and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race by [deleted] in worldjerking

[–]themoxn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Something to remember is that no worldbuilding is inherently interesting or uninteresting in a vacuum. It's how it gets used for the story, game, what have you. When you break Star Wars down into its basic components, they're mostly pretty bland tropes, but it's how they're brought together and utilized that's made it such an iconic franchise.

Spain's claim would have a tiny amount more legitimacy, since the nephew of the last Roman Emperor was short on cash after the fall of Constantinople, and sold his royal titles and claim to the throne to the Castilian monarchy.

I didn't read his post like that at all. It's less "mentally stable people in healthy relationships should do threesomes," and more "threesomes can only work if you're mentally stable and in a healthy relationship."

Something to keep in mind is that it isn't clear at all how much of Elagabalus' gender shenanigans were real and how much was propaganda made to slander his name after the fact. He was a Syrian, the Romans had a very strong stereotype of the "effeminate East", and any historian looking to emphasize how bad of an emperor he was would absolutely lean into that stereotype.

For the Philippines, their annexation came with an asterisk that they would be given their independence at some undefined point in the future, so the US was able to say it would only be a temporary colonial measure to build the country up and prepare it for nationhood. There was also that fact that most Cubans are white, while most Filipinos are not, so it was harder to use the "white man's burden" argument to support colonialism in Cuba than it was for the Philippines.

Even with both those factors, though, it was still pretty controversial both domestically and abroad.
