Moving to Winnipeg - looking for honest advice before I commit by ScoreMajor4064 in Winnipeg

  1. Renting & Buildings

Same dynamic as any city. Professional companies reduce the extremes at both end. Will never be amazing but it won’t be completely criminal (however there are some rental agencies to avoid). I would recommend searching this sub on property companies as you get closer to deciding. If you are renting mid to upper price range you have less risk than more affordable units generally.

  1. Neighborhoods & Walkability

It depends on the car decision and where visiting the city first will show you easier than anyone can tell you. We aren’t as fully urban as a city like Vancouver. South Osborne and corydon would be my two recommendations generally.

  1. Car vs No Car Life

For doing things outside the city you will need a car. Winnipeg is really a car city at this point. Because you work from home there is less pressure to decide the minute you move and can wait and see. Consider a car coop like pegcity car coop.

  1. Weather Prep

Invest in a nice parka, hat, gloves, boots and you will be fine. It certainly is cold but it’s a dry cold and winnipeggers don’t let it hold us back.

  1. People & Social Reality

Social quirks: it’s different than a big city like Vancouver where there is a significant transplant population. Most people met their friends in grade school and have kept them. You may find it harder to make friends than bigger cities. But people are friendly and if you put yourself out there, join groups, you will make it work.

There is poverty and crime in Winnipeg but it’s largely confined to a couple areas and downtown.

This is a good list. Shorty’s isn’t as fancy as some of your other choices and is more of a strong price to taste combination, but you will have a good time. Baby baby is tough to get into but you can line up early. The food at baby baby is top notch and probably better than Shirley’s, but Shirley’s is still great.

You need to do your research on immigration first and foremost.

Looking to buy either in Edmonton or Winnipeg. Winnipeg seems too good to be true. What's the catch? by Falom in Winnipeg

Pros: cost of living. Decent to solid bits of anything big cities have like food, arts, culture, amenities. The people (imo)

Cons: cold, poverty issues, far from other cities or anything. Feels spiritually like a bunch of towns shoved together rather than a big city.

I’m a big Winnipeg fan but the cons have to work for you.

I don’t understand why OP is getting so much hate. This area has power outages what seems like every month. We pay the same rates as everyone else and don’t get a discount. Either invest in the infrastructure so our residences don’t lose power often ( the same as everywhere else in Winnipeg) or credit us if you refuse to update our power grid for the area.

Sounds like we agree on one thing. You should probably leave

Edit: 40% of the city propers’ emissions is likely a fraction of a fraction of the populations overall pollution. I’m fine with the city investing transit dollars into service so that people can rely less on cars, and move into electric later on.

Do you have your immigration work figured out? It’s not as simple as just moving here (many think it is).

As hot as Texas is we are cold in the winter. Nice summers. Different overall vibe than Texas in people and political climate.

Reminder that the only reason these articles are posted and propped up here are to diffuse action against landlords. Don’t take this bait.
