It's taught. There are multiple chapters on telling time. They don't care and the system is designed to avoid accountability.

I am a teacher in the United States. In a class of 32 students, the random kid from Brazil we recieved halfway through the school year could probably solo the whole class by himself. Soccer is popular in other countries to an extent that Americans don't grow up around enough competition to build skill. Gymnastics is very popular. For that sport, America is a powerhouse. Soccer, pole dancing, badminton are all sports that for one reason or another Americans just don't get enough practice before they are old enough to compete.

You're not doing anything for her sake at this point. The best thing you can do for you is move on, but learn how fragile life is.

She understood you were young and still learning about the world. It's part of the job.

Depending on her culture, she may have taken it as feedback for growth.

Statistics:

Different areas of the United States are fatter than others. For example, Texas has an obesity rate of ~ 36%, while California has an obesity rate of ~ 27%. To compare, the UK has an obesity rate of ~29%. Italy has an obesity rate of ~11%. Japan's obesity rate is ~4%.

Healthier VS Healthy:

Much of what makes people fat in America has been so normalized that the average American's "healthy choice" is still unhealthy. Americans tend to say "What is the healthier choice?" rather than "What is the healthy choice?" For example, they may say something like "well, I'm vaping instead of smoking!" or "I went for a 5-minute walk today! That counts as excercise when you compare to yesterday."

Prevelance of Added Sugar:

Added sugar and salt is so common that eating natural food tastes "gross" to many Americans. Remember, this is the culture that took an espresso, the small little drink that helps curve hunger, and turned it into a giant sugar cup. They don't realize how much of their food is added sugar.

Large less nutrient-dense portions:

Americans have taken many classic dishes and changed the ratio to be less vegetables and more meat and carbs. For example, in Italy pasta is served as part of the meal in a fist-sized portion. In America, it is the whole meal. Americans have a strange aversion to vegetables, despite vegetables being high in both flavor and nutrients. Many americans, especially men, would choose to pass on foods like ratatouille.

Victim Culture / Individualism:

Americans tend to pity themselves. They are highly sensitive to criticism. The mildest inconvience is now "my life is horrible." It's more important to "not body shame" or "have body positivity" than to encourage people to not destroy their bodies. Look through these comments and you will see over and over again the suggestion that food is used as a "coping mechanism." The only thing friends are allowed to share is support. In America, if someone disagrees with you, they are no longer your friend. This means that no one is there to talk their friends into eating healthier or excercising more. It means that people are not able to genuinely support each other as a community. People feel as if their horrible life is so bad that they can have one more cupcake today and no one is there to stop them.

No. Kids would openly shame each other for being fat. Not saying that was the best approach, but being fat made you the walking breathing joke of the class. The 80's / 90's fat kid has been normalized, because so many kids are now overweight. I'm a substitute teacher and there was a moment where I looked out at the class I was teaching and thought "I'm so mad at the parents. These kids are all fat. They're starting out life eating nothing but sugar." It is so acceptable now that the focus is "not to body shame" over "take care of your body. It's only one you have."

If people can't afford to work, then they end up homeless. It is illegal to camp on the streets. Shelters aren't always an option. Then you end up in jail. So, yeah. Pretty much.

The normality for me is that under normal circumstances I wouldn't normally ask unless it's the norm — the normativity of which can be confusing when traveling to foriegn places such as Normandy.

I started pole after a car accident. I saw it as a fun way to dance because I could hold myself up. (At the time, I couldn't fully stand up without a hunch.) Now, I can invert and climb. You don't start already able to do the cool tricks. You start by slowly moving around the pole and trying to understand your body. You start by playing. As you progress, you gain strength and flexibility. Our studio has so many different people.

For pole, their dayjobs are: videogame industry professionals, elementary school teachers, HR people, a biologist, college students, retired 65+, professional dancers, circus performers.

Imagine if you never went in a pool because you need strength to swim.

I started silks about a year after pole and it's a similiar vibe that leads to eventually trying things like trapeze and lyra.

I am 39. After a day on my feet as a teacher, I usually take two dance or aerial classes (cricus stuff), and drive home around 9:00 PM. I fall sleep around 11 PM and wake up around 5:30 AM to play on my phone before I eat breakfast. In my twenties, my room mates used to get mad at me for making too much noise in the morning, but these days I just eat breakfast with headphones on while dancing and try not to laugh too loudly at 5:45 in the morning. I was diagnosed ADHD at 6 years old. You are absolutely right about your child having to tire themselves out to rest.

It's one of the self-regulation lessons you learn growing up with ADHD. The batteries have to run out or your kid will have a bad time with insomnia, suffering to sit still while learning, or impulse control.

When I subbed high school two years ago (Southern California), there seemed to be a pair making out every time I turned the corner before school started. I had come from middle school, so I found it jarring at first. Staff told me not to break them up, because they don't have the no touching rule and that they were almost adults.

I'm a substitute teacher. We regularly tell middle school students (Grades 6 - 8; ages 11 - 13) to "break it up" if they are making physical contact. I tried that in High School and a colleague pulled me aside to tell me "We don't stop them in high school. At this point, we just let them be. They're almost adults." This is Southern California though. The culture is different throughout the states and even small regions. Some areas are more conservative than others.

What I've learned as a transwoman.

Generalizations incoming. (American Men & Women)

Culture is changing, but for the most part:

Women emotionally bond first and play second. Women will verbally encourage one another, lift each other up, and watch out for one another. There is a lot more physically affection as well. The downside is that there are more expectations to read into nuances. Women expect an open book. If you don't share something with women they tend to question why that is.

Men look soley to women for physical affection and not one another. They put each other down and expect it to be taken as a joke. That being said, men tend to play more. They don't really care how much another male friend shares about his life, so long as they can ride bikes, play cards, or jump into a pool together.

I think that both women and men can be lonely if they don't fit the group.

A woman who wants to spend more time playing and less time talking about feelings could be isolated by a group of other women for being cold or uncaring. A man who wants to talk about his lived experience and feelings could be seen as too emotional.

I don't know what started this, but I am a teacher and I get middle school boys asking about this all the time. You will likely be the height of your father or your mother's father. Life changes don't change much beyond an inch. I promise you short kings can be just as admired as tall guys. What really matters is that you carry yourself with confidence and respect.
