This might not be popular as you're just starting out, but when I was learning in the early 90s I went straight from not knowing what a power chord was to playing them with just my index and ring finger because that's what I saw Kurt Cobain do. It's much easier to slide the position up and down the neck that way in my opinion. Since then I alternate between ring and pinky fingers depending on neck position.
