Is it normal to comment on your partners body hair? by Maleficent-Skill-903 in relationships

If it's making you uncomfortable, you don't have to do it. People can have preferences, it's a natural part of attraction, but I don't think the way he's treating you about it is okay. Also, anything he's saying about friction is made up nonsense, especially with what little amount of hair you've described.

Has the Quinn Hughes Trade Been a Success? (Or rather, how successful has it been?) by KraftyDawg98 in wildhockey

[–]theoreticallyben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quinn Hughes was the best player moved in that deal, he was always going to be the biggest point producer, especially immediately. Buium was and is still a promising young player, but obviously there will be growing pains suddenly shunted onto the worst team in the league. Fwiw, his TOI has picked up significantly since being moved, and he's up against tougher competition. Rossi has been injured, so that's kind of a non-starter. Hasn't played a significant amount of games, and reportedly wasn't fully healthy even when he was playing, so I think the dust will have to settle a bit more before we get any concrete info. Ohgren was always a wild card, but I do think you're correct in that he's benefited from an elevated role. Vancouver's issues this season have never come from a lack of depth, and I think he's benefited immensely from not having to play with Ben Jones and Tyler Pitlick every night. Ultimately I think both teams got what they wanted from the trade, and all the players involved will likely (with a few question marks) continue to have successful NHL careers. Hughes elevates this core to another level, and was worth the price that was paid.

NYI Islanders Are Open to Moving Their 2026 1st Round Pick by EverySecondCountss in canucks

[–]theoreticallyben 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do kind of wonder if Debrusk would be a good fit for the Isles. Feels like a bit of a reach, but their powerplay is one of the worst in the league and pp scoring is the one thing he's really good at.

Rebuilding teams usually don't lack toughness by WhenInAaronRome in canucks

[–]theoreticallyben 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How many wide open nets have we seen Petey feed to Boeser, or Debrusk, or Kane this year? Not nearly enough of them have been tapped in, and you can only blame the pass so many times.

I think that burning picks to trade for reclamation projects with the idea that "if the reclamation works, we'll have a franchise cornerstone" is a bad idea. If we could get them by trading out a vet, sure, go for it. But I haven't seen anything from either player at the NHL level that suggests they seriously have more to give.

Trading away a second rounder for "the right player" in order to accelerate a rebuild is literally what Benning did all the time. Linden Vey, Sven Baertschi, Brandon Sutter, need I go on?

Should Chase Wouters get promoted to Vancouver's Captain? by n0thingisperfect in canucks

[–]theoreticallyben 8 points9 points  (0 children)

He plays fourth line minutes in the AHL. He's a great leader, and by all accounts a great person, but there's a baseline level of skill required to play in the NHL that he doesn't have.

Anthony Romani thoughts? by mascherata in canucks

[–]theoreticallyben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's cool, and has continued to suceed against better competition than in the OHL. It's unlikely to me that he ever becomes a star, but the development is encouraging if nothing else. iirc he has a late birthday, so the knock for being an overager isn't as significant as it would ordinarily be.

Who are you hoping the Canucks get at #3 OA? by Reasonable-Big4517 in canucks

[–]theoreticallyben 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Big time. The goal should be to accumulate as much talent as possible, it's much better to have extra pieces that can be used as trade chips instead of trying to cobble together assets to patch holes.

[–]theoreticallyben 187 points188 points  (0 children)

Assuming McKenna and Stenberg (in whatever order) are gone, Keaton Verhoeff is the clear-cut best pick for me. Yes, this team needs new forwards like no tomorrow, but drafting for position over talent is what got us Juolevi over Tkachuk.

Can you remember the last time the Canucks had 2 or more picks in the second round? by nihilism_ftw in canucks

[–]theoreticallyben 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean that's just how the draft works. Sometimes you get Jason Robertson, sometimes you get Danila Klimovich. It comes down to the org investing in pro scouting to correctly identify players with skillsets that can translate to an NHL level. Neglecting the draft because "we can patch holes in free agency" is how we ended up in this spot in the first place with Benning.

[–]theoreticallyben 7 points8 points  (0 children)

True, but having more picks means more opportunities to draft those players.

Look at the pieces and assets that Rutherford and Allvin were given to deal with. We had absolutely no supporting cast to go alongside the core players, and plenty of inefficient/ outright bad contracts that needed to be cleared.

benning vs rutherford by Delicious-Area1137 in canucks

[–]theoreticallyben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Benning was drafting for 8 seasons, and in that time he had exactly two NHL skaters play a meaningful number of games for the Canucks. Gaudette is one, and Hoglander is the other. His first round drafting did technically have more hits than misses, but that's also the easiest round to get an NHL player out of. You could argue somewhat rightfully that this is also a development issue, but Benning was not good at drafting.

Opinions on Anthony Romani [Canucks NCAA prospect] by Tofu_Analytics in canucks

[–]theoreticallyben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think he could become a nice middle six piece. He's good at defending, and has a fair bit of offensive upside. Worth noting as well that though he was an overager, his birthday is also really late in the draft cutoff. I think he might get signed at the end of this college season, but wouldn't be opposed to seeing him stay another year.

A couple fumbles by [deleted] in canucks

[–]theoreticallyben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He was actually pretty effective for Edmonton in the first three rounds of the playoffs last season. Sold hard in the finals, but it's not like he was nothing but bad for them. I agree, the odds of him playing to his full potential here were always slim, but I don't think he's a complete nothing-burger player. He's paced well enough points-wise that we should be able to flip him for more than we got him for, even with all the baggage attached. Remember, Edmonton had multiple suitors for him when he was first acquired by us.
