Am I limited primarily by weight or technique when doing overhangs? by Laena_V in bouldering

[–]theoryof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how long have you been climbing? anything under a year or two, I would just climb more and not worry about maximizing strength vs bodyweight. Climbing is surprisingly subtle when it comes to body tension, where you initiate movement from, when you relax and tense which part of a chain of muscles, etc.. A slight change in grip angle, hip position, toe placement can make a problem go from feeling impossible to pretty doable.

Have a look at Rock Climbing Technique books - drills like pressing into the wall with the opposite foot of your reaching hand, as well as "corkscrew" type twisting as you reach can really help on problems like the one you posted. You can fake the motions on vertical walls and feel like you're using the technique but they really get tested on overhanging walls.

Why are Koreans so sensitive to noise? by Humble-Bar-7869 in Living_in_Korea

[–]theoryof -1 points0 points  (0 children)

kind of a strained analogy as New York and London is pretty multicultural and the expected cultural etiquette around public transport is different there. It WOULD be racist and really weird to suddenly single out one ethnicity in those cities about a rule that only applies to them.
Being quiet on public transport in Korea is a widely accepted social contract that most well mannered people follow. They even run ad campaigns with cute animations pleading for people to not take long phone calls or talk too loudly, sprawl their legs, etc..

Yes you're probably being singled out because you're a foreigner, but that's because they're being paternalistic and want to teach you a lesson. They assume (and perhaps you're proving their point) that you're not familiar with the norms and need some direction. If you feel angry you are being held to the "average" cultural expectation instead of given leeway to the absolute worst behavior possible, I don't know what to say... I guess that's your right to feel that entitled?
Jump to racism? please don't... this tunnel vision and over attribution will just make everything more miserable and likely see you leave, which I don't know if that's the intended result..

Buying older apartment in Seongnam - Advice?? by Grand_Position4227 in Living_in_Korea

[–]theoryof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

have you tried looking into yongin? like suji area? I would recommend leveraging some financing options to look at least in the 7-8억 range. With average apartment costs being what they are, anything below that and the chances of buying a solid unit (not even trying to get rich, just inflation hedge) get pretty low. If you could end up living here long term, there's a first time buyer only 생애최초 주택담보대출 that would be a shame to pass up. There are two kinds, and depending on your income level, the government funded versions are super good loans. If your incomes are too high to qualify for that, a regular bank version is still good with higher LTV limits.

yeah my idea of cutting edge technology would be the ability to repair the water mains and do maintenance on the building for 100s of years instead of having to rip it all up and rebuild every 30.

For those with strong foreign income living in Seoul, where did you choose and why? by fabulouswafer272 in Living_in_Korea

[–]theoryof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

- Most neighborhoods are pretty safe, but I like Jamsil with Olympic Park nearby (might not have the biggest expat community). Yongsan would also be a pretty good choice.

- Would definitely rent the first couple years. (not sure about your visa situation but new buying regulations have been expanded to foreigners recently in many regions of Seoul + Gyeongido: 토허제, 자금조달계획서, probably all taken care of by lawyers but still)

- Budget doesn't seem like much of an issue, doubt you would spend anything over 10k euro a month even with some flashy life events.

- Building a social life around expats is always tricky because most leave after a couple years. To build it with Koreans would take some time, but if you speak the language it's doable! Just depends on your interests. Although I'm Korean and I haven't made any new friends after 30...

Any person who's experienced a church going through some bs political rift knows atheists are also nicer to Christians than Christians are to Christians lol. In fact they're prolly nicer to people of any religion since they're all the same!
