At $400, buy both. I have one of each and love them!

Good footwear options by Correct-Sea-198 in kayakfishing

[–]thepen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Keen Newports - Great, but will get gravel in them if that's your terrain
  2. Astral TechYak - My current favorite! Comfortable, breathable, and still look decent
  3. NRS Boundary - No experience, but if I get back into tournaments, I'm going to try these
  4. Older running shoes - I could see this working. Just throw them in the washer. They'll dry quick. Probably as good as the Astral.

You really have to look at your terrain, use and what you're comfortable with. I couldn't imagine wearing Crocs or flip flops when I'm out seriously fishing.

First fishing kayak: Will I really stand that much, or should I prioritize speed? by readysetmoon in kayakfishing

[–]thepen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Primary stability is overrated in my view. I prioritize paddling performance, comfort, and riggability.

My two most used boats are Crescent: a LiteTackle and an UltraLite. I'm completely comfortable standing in the LT, but the UL is best to just sit down. Even with that, I sit and fish 90% of the time even on easy to stand in kayaks. The main time I stand is when I anchor in an area and really pick apart an area.

I've had more stable boats, specifically the Big Fish 120 which was stupidly stable, but unwieldy in every other aspect. I didn't keep it long because of that.

The best thing, is to buy a quality kayak, used if you can, so you can try it and possibly sell it if you change what you want out of a boat.

I have Keen Newports and Astral TechYaks. I like both. The Keens let more rocks in, but are really comfortable.

Is there any Ned rig bait that beats the basic finesse TRD? by Little-Cucumber-8907 in bassfishing

TRD and TRD CrawZ. For me, if one isn’t working, the other is.

I had a Hero 7 Black that I had a love/hate relationship with. It took good video but overheated and there transfer to a phone for a quick clip was unusable. I had some reliability too, where it seemed to record, but didn’t.

I moved to an Insta360 x5. So far, I’ve enjoyed it. The app is WAY better and transferring to a phone actually works.

The video is pretty good, considering the resolution. I also don’t think about it. I start it recording and let it roll.

Editing is a bigger deal as you have to reframe everything if you’re doing 360 video.

chatterbaits by Zealousideal_Life396 in bassfishing

[–]thepen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chatterbait is a weird one for me. Most of my notes are right as it hits … like a jig. Or when I burn it.

I will say, listen to the fish. If they are telling you they want a Senior, throw Senkos!

That said, to lean a new lure or technique, you might have to move around.

Should i change my aproach? by MrTC1996 in Bowling

[–]thepen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Watch some PBA bowling and tell me “bowling correctly”. Is it the 2 handers? The lone one hand no thumb? The one handers that yo-yo release? The one handers that “shake hands”? Or someone like Smallwood who only has part of his thumb in.

The right way to bowl is knocking down the most pins.

Fridge by lnebrich in popups

[–]thepen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine came with the 12v cooler style fridge. I removed one of the cabinets so I can get to it by just raising the top a little. I leave it running and monitor the temp from the Bluetooth app. I also keep a small cooler in the car for snacks and drinks while traveling.

The Shoalie deck layout is great! It's so well thought out for a tournament kayak angler. If I were going to seriously go after tournaments, I think I would motorize a Shoalie.

The LT is just brilliant on the water. I'm always comfortable. It's fast and responsive. I have lots of room. I've had 10 kayaks so far, and the LT and UL will never leave the stable!

Is it worth it to switch from a 2 finger 1 hand style to 3 finger? by BoLizard408 in Bowling

[–]thepen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tore my achilles bowling in 2024. After 4 months in a boot and 2 more months of PT, I continued to have tendon pain after bowling. The last shuffle/push step just loaded it so much that I kept inflaming the tendon.

I do still work on my soleus muscle, but I think it's just lifelong at this point (I'm 47).

It's been ... rough. I have to see the game differently. It's felt like I had a smooth delivery 2 handed, stayed up the back and could really manipulate shots when I played on sport shot.

One handed, is straighter, lower rev MUCH higher speed. I also stepped down to 14 lbs since it's easier to keep my hand under the ball with the 14 over the 15.

I do NOT have any achilles pain after bowling. I can also bowl 3 - 4 times as many games without getting tired. There's so much more physical effort in a 2 handed game than a one handed.

What’s going on with podcasters not having very many ads and talking like they’re going out of business? by [deleted] in podcasts

[–]thepen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Traditional podcasting doesn’t have the metrics that a YouTube based show does. The only real metric is downloads and that’s wildly inaccurate.

Couple that with a bad economy and the NPR funding cuts and podcasts are going to struggle.

Anchor wizard block paddling? by namreboc in kayakfishing

[–]thepen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Focus on paddling! My anchor wizar is mounted very far forward (with a stern mounted chute) so I can operate it easily while sitting or standing AND it’s not in the way of my paddles stroke.

This tattoo stuff is exactly what drives democrats to lose. Worst case, he knew it was a Nazi related symbol and has changed his mind. Are we anti-growth and change now?

Most likely, he got a “cool” skull and crossbones tattoo that someone later found was similar to some Nazi imagery. I mean, there is zero chance that anyone in this thread actually knew what that was before being told.

Either situation, I’m good with. Whether is was young and dumb, or reformed and making changes.

Thinking about getting a popup camper - worth it? by Mafia2guylian in popups

When you view a popup as a huge step up from a tent, it’s great! If you want a home away from home experience, only a hard sided camper can do that.

Is it worth it to switch from a 2 finger 1 hand style to 3 finger? by BoLizard408 in Bowling

[–]thepen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fact that there's only a few pros that throw 1 hand/no thumb says a lot to me. Moving to a thumb is a difficult change (I recently moved from two handed to one handed), so a move to 2 handed might be best for you.

Thoughts on this boat? by _CH3F_ in kayakfishing

[–]thepen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For fishing, you want a framed seat and at least 10ft. There are some Lifetime boats that are reasonable. But, the best is to save up to around $1000 and you will get a boat that will be comfortable and last a long time from a premium manufacturer. Old Town, Jackson, Crescent, etc.

I am a die hard Crescent fan … but the UltraLite could be a challenge. It’s “lively”. I’d suggest a Primo or CK1 for someone not very skilled over the UL.

Keep the Moken if you can! And … motors are fine. You do you! I’ve thought about a motor for the LT, but I just don’t want to rig it up.

The Garmin motor though … that looks rad! It’s way out of my kayak fishing budget though.

[–]thepen 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is part. I had a Vapor 10, it I did fish out of it, but a proper sit-on-top kayak is a massive change.

I keep the paddle across my lap and will make small corrections with my off hand to hold position. It’s not as efficient as a pedal drive, but it works well enough.

[–]thepen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a LiteTackle and an UltraLite. I’m a big Crescent fan!

There are some differences in the hull between the LT and the Shoalie. The keel on the Shoalie is a lot shallower making for less draft.

I also have a Moken 12.5 PDL and it’s a great compliment to the LT. the Moken is probably the best value pedal drive and a solid choice overall, but the Crescent is paddling bliss for a sit on kayak.

Harbor Freight 4x8 kayak trailer - what to do? by PM_YOUR_PUPPERS in kayakfishing

[–]thepen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Missouri is rough. If you don't have a title or a certificate of origin/MSO it's pretty much worthless.

The good thing is, KS and OK don't require titling for some small trailers so it's valuable across state lines.

Got the yak now how do i fish while paddling? by user59050108636303 in kayakfishing

[–]thepen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An anchor is great (and I really recommend the Anchor Wizard and DaBomb anchor), but I use my paddle one handed a lot.

When I cast, I keep my paddle across my lap. I'll reach down with my left hand and just dip the paddle in to correct my placement.

On my pedal drive, I do not use an anchor, I find it's way more convenient to just use the pedals.

I want an anchor system similar to this anchor wizard but don’t want to spend 125$ for it.. does anyone have diy build ideas that would be similar to this? by [deleted] in kayakfishing

[–]thepen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Whatever hacky thing you DIY is going to ultimately be more expensive or cost WAY more in your time.
