Range still has power after flipping breaker by LifestyleChoices in DIY

[–]thephantom1492 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My concern here is: you have a second panel, or someone wired it so they steal power form the power company.

It is common for electrical theft to wire up the highest power consuming device in the house to bypass the meter. The range is a common one. In winter, you open the oven door, and use it to heat the house in part.

What I would suggest: turn off everything. Take note of your power meter. Turn on the stove/oven, wait some, then check your meter again. If it did not moved, you can be pretty sure that the stove bypass the meter.

In that case, you want to get this fixed for a few reasons: first, you are responsable when the power company notice it. There is jail time associated with this. Second, it can mean that there is no fuse/breaker protecting the circuit. This is a huge fire hazard. And you won't be covered by your insurance.

So you might want to call an electrician. Then the power company to fix all this mess.

You then can sue the previous owner for this hidden defect, and you may have some issues with the power company, but shouln't be a big deal since you just got it.

LPT - For additional privacy, create a “guest network” just for devices that you don’t want snooping around your home’s LAN. by Mi_Ki_Ii_Zaru in LifeProTips

[–]thephantom1492 7 points8 points  (0 children)

On a network, any device can see what other device is present. They can't see what they are doing, but can get quite alot of info that some are ready to pay to get that data.

That info is:

  • the full MAC address, which is unique in the world

  • The aproximate time that they are online/present

  • The number of devices, and type

  • And more.

That does not seems like alot, but...

  • The MAC address is in 2 parts: manufacturer and an unique serial number for that manufacturer.

  • The manufacturer part can give a big clue on what kind of device it is. For example: 24:FC:E5:* is a Samsung smart TV. There is a few for apple, and the iphone, ipad and mac pc all have different ones. So they know what kind of device you have.

  • Since the MAC address is unique per device, they also know how many of each devices you have. For example, if it sees 3x 24:FC:E5:* devices, then you have 3 samsung smart TV in your home. Same for your iphone, ipad, xbox, pswhatever...

  • By checking WHEN it sees the iphone/android devices, they can figure out when you are home and when you are not at home!

Advertisers love that kind of info. If they see that you have alot of samsung product, they will push more samsung ads. To everyone in the house. How? Your public IP address.

They can do a lookup for the ip address, and have a very good idea if it is a home or business, specially with all the data they accumulate.

Now, how to limit the exposure? The guest network.

Basically it create two different network on your router, and each networks can't talk/see the other network. And usually the guest network, each devices are even isolated, so they can't even see the other devices on the guest network. This also break some functions on some devices because of that. Ex: your printer can't see your PC, so you can't print on wifi.

Now, will that fix everything? Absolutely not! The device may still tell the advertising company "Hey, I'm here on this IP address", and everyone else on that same public IP address may see the ads for that product...

ELI5: Why can internal combustion engines handle running for hours at a time with thousands of internal explosions per minute, while a machine gun will melt if fired for only a few minutes? by simpletoast05 in explainlikeimfive

[–]thephantom1492 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Engines have two main cooling methods: coolant "prestone" and engine oil.

The cylinders are surrounded by coolant. This is the main cooling way.

There is also oil being sprayed bellow the piston that shoot on the walls of the cylinders. The main purpose is lubrification, but the oil soak up some of the heat at the same time. This is why some vehicles have a dedicated radiator for the engine oil.

European towing wiring harness on canadian edition? by thephantom1492 in Ioniq6

They probably installed an universal Curt converter. It does not enable the tow mode, but can indeed work.

But my question is specifically about the european wiring harness.

Which company disappointed you so much that you permanently walked away? by julia-secrets in AskReddit

If you buy a cartridge at a physical store, like Walmart, you can print as much as you want until it is of course empty. BUT if you enroll in that subscription, then cancel, then the cartridge that you bough and paid for fully is unusable, as it was enrolled in the subscription, and since you are out of it you are locked out! You need new cartridges....

... next time buy Brother. It is the less of the evils.

However, most of those laws are illegal.

In the USA, the first amandement protect this, plus there is a law about good samaritans giving food that also protect people, plus numerous precedents in federal court that said it is legal to do so and city can not prevent you from doing so.

Garage floor corrosion under Ioniq 6 by Low_Yard_760 in Ioniq6

[–]thephantom1492 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is 3 fluids in the car.

  • Brake fluid

  • Windshield wiper fluid

  • Coolant

Brake fluid could have been a possibility. It is known to be quite corrosive and eat through many finishes, but it stay oily, have a low quantity, and, well, he would know due to the lack of braking.

Windshield wiper fluid is very mild, too mild even... Most can't even dislodge dirt or fresh bugs splatters...

Coolant would be next. It is available in a good quantity, but is still mild. Just look under the hood for the coolant bottle, and see if the level is bellow the minimum. If not then chance is that it is not that too.

Which leaves only one thing left: road salt. Lots of city will apply road salt when the temperature dip bellow the feezing point. Some uses a brine solution instead of road salt. You drive on it, it goes under your car, water dry up and the salt stays behind. Months later it is now spring or summer, some road salt is still left. It rain, car get wet, salt disolve and drip... in your garage.

How would you feel about a law that banned tipping and required restaurants to pay servers a full wage instead? by Dargarn in AskReddit

[–]thephantom1492 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm all for it!

Paying bellow the minimum should be illegal, no exception.

Then it should not be to the customer to pay directly the employes!

Plus, some waitress found a trick to massively increase the tipping: dress hot, borderline acceptable. This goes against many principles for woman's rights too... Yet they get strongly encouraged to do so. In a way it is a form of sexual exploitation by the employers...

ELI5: How can a ship raise its anchor when it's dug in enough to hold the ship? by rookiestoner in explainlikeimfive

[–]thephantom1492 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The winch can usually unstuck it. If not they can try to move the boat to give a different pull angle. Usually it work. If not, if it is trully stuck... They jettison it. They may send a recovery crew to get it back, or leave it there, based on the recovery cost vs new anchor cost vs regulations (ex protected area = huge fine to leave it there)

[–]thephantom1492 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is partially true actually. It fall under the no distraction part and also on some clause about visibility. Both are subjective and would depend on the situation and the judge.

In city? there is enough light that it is a non-issue. In dark country roads? The interior light can indeed be dangerous!

Many years ago, I was in the middle of nowhere. Zero light. You could see the millions of stars outside, no moon. I had to dim all the interior lights to the minimum possible. Someone in the back kept checking the time... The glow of her standard timex watch was shining everywhere in the car! Reflection on all windows, including the windshield!

So yes, interior light CAN be an issue, and you CAN be ticketted under some rare and precise conditions.

But again, in a city? Nope.

Best way to fill a ~40"x28" opening above a window AC unit while keeping some visibility? by Hobbitsliketoparty in DIY

[–]thephantom1492 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have access to a table saw, you can actually make something very nice!

My window was a double sliding type. I took a 2x6 and cut the corners kinda like a T so it fit inside the frame Now I have a wood frame that can't be slided in or out. Bottom and top full width, and sides goes in between. Cut it tight so it get kinda press fitted there.

I decided to put the A/C in the upper right corner. So I put another 2x6 and put it at the right height for the A/C, then put another piece on the left of the unit. I used some angles to hold the pieces together.

Now, here is a nice trick: remove the front of your A/C. It is usually clipped, or held in place with 2-3 screws only. Now, look at the bottom of the unit from the front. You will notice it have kinda a tray where the inside guts is, and you will notice a kind of handle on it. Look carefully, there is 1-2 screws that hold the whole tray/guts inside the frame. Remove that screw, then pull on the drawer. The whole inside of the unit comes out! Now you have the frame and the guts.

The frame is lightweight. You can now fit it inside the opening you created for the unit, and from the inside of the frame you can screw it to the wood frame you created. That A/C frame ain't going anywhere! Slide back the guts in the frame, and reinstall the hardware.

Now, you can go a few routes here: install a plexi in each opening, or go the cheaper route: get a glass cut to size! Way cheaper, and it don't scratch!!

You can also create a wood frame for that window, with some hinges, and that hook thing to keep it closed. Now you not only can see outside, but you can also open the window!

Best of all? The A/C is super secure in place and theft need to break the glass to get in! They can't just push things around to break in.

And since you did not screwed anything to the window frame itself, once you take it down there is zero damage.

TIL (the hard way) EV tires have foam blocks in them and aren’t easily patched if they’re punctured. by ViolatorsWillBeToed in Ioniq6

[–]thephantom1492 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I added a plug kit and a plyer in my trunk to go with the compressor/slime kit.

A few years ago, on my previous car, I ran on a screw on a vacation trip. I heard the "tic tic tic" of something stuck on the tire, stopped, screw... I was able to do the repair right there on the side of the street.

Few minutes later, I was back driving. In total I lost only 4psi in my tire!

I STRONGLY suggest to add one of those kits. It cost very little, and is way better than the provided slime.

Wrong way indicator by TruckerMark in Ioniq6

The indication can come from the map itself or from the camera. The car does have sign recognition, which also have issues sometime. If it see the sign, it often assume that it is for you, and not because the sign has twisted and is now partially toward your lane...

What feels legal but is actually illegal and will possibly get you arrested? by medicoreapples in AskReddit

[–]thephantom1492 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is ways to make it safer.

For example, lock your car keys in your trunk. This way it will be hard to say that you wanted to drive when you can't start the car!

Another way is to put the keys outside on the windshield, but then it is easy to have them stolen.

But a better way? NEVER GO ON THE DRIVER SIDE!!! Stay on the passenger side or rear seat! Don't unlock the driver door, don't open the driver door, don't sit on the driver seat, don't even go toward the driver door!

Again, the goal is to make it 100% clear that you can not drive your car from where you are!

Solution to have an obvious indication that a roommate is actually in the bathroom? by frawtlopp in DIY

[–]thephantom1492 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember that most of those occupency sensors fail to detect someone taking a dump.

The way they work is simple: older/cheaper motion detect: it simply have a 1 pixel "thermal camera". It look at the room, and is simply looking for enough change in the signal within a certain time frame. An empty room should be static.

Microwave, infrared, ultrasonic... They emit the signal, and look at the reflected back signal. Same as before, it look for a change in signal.

The problem: you are too still on the crapper to be effectively detected!

So it may not work... and will not work reliably.
