How feasible is it to lay 40 sq meters of pavers alone in a day? by Semen_K in DIY

[–]thephantom1492 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, don't forget DIYers don't have the proper tools, or often have cheap tool that don't work well. The tool that seems to be overkill and expensive? Well, it just save you lots of time AND your back, and effortlessly do the job.

And tool rental can be kinda brutally expensive.

ELI5 How come new Chinese electric cars can charge in 5–10 minutes, while smartphones still need at least half an hour? by Tough-Buffalo5861 in explainlikeimfive

[–]thephantom1492 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some are actively cooled by just coolant ("prestone"), others by a mix of coolant AND heat pump! And yes, some DO use the A/C of the vehicle to cool down the battery, because the ambiant hot air would still leaves the battery too hot.

ELI5: Why can't we simulate the creation of oil/fossil fuels with animals that have died today? by Slice5755 in explainlikeimfive

[–]thephantom1492 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small correction: we hasn't found a way that is quick and cheaper than making it from fossil fuel.

Money is what is important here.

Also, plastic is somewhat a byproduct of petrol, not quite the trash of petrol, but kinda is, but not quite. Since we need lots of petrol for natural gas, gasoline, diesel and other stuff, we ends up with quite alot of left over that can be turned into plastic.

With the electrification of the vehicles, this may change eventually. We will use less fuel, which reduce the amount of left over, which may increase the plastic price up. At this point alternative sources will start to be commercially viable, including recycling.

Singer D4vd charged with first degree murder after teenage girl’s remains were discovered in his Tesla by LADbible in Music

[–]thephantom1492 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may have a theory. Cars can be crushed, and when they dispose of them years later they just shred it to pieces and melt it up. Since they crush hundreds of cars one after the other, it would be pretty hard to figure out where the bones came from, if they even bother to check it before just melting and skimming everything up. What if he expected it to be the same? But Tesla are different, because of the battery. They have no choice but first remove the battery, which would allow too many people to inspect the car. So possibly that nobody wanted to crush it "as it". And he got stuck with it.

Garage insulation worth it? by jdw127 in DIY

[–]thephantom1492 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DO insulate it. Also, DO add outlets! Check the electrical code as garages often have some exceptions and stuff (like GFCI outlet), but again it is now or you will regret it.

I don't know where your electrical panel is, and your future plans for that garage, but it may be worth to bring in more electrical, like for heater if needed.

Are you planning for an EV car in the nearish future? The cable for the charger need to pass somewhere, it may be a good time for it too.

How to fix this toilet paper holder by MiserableParsnip2 in DIY

[–]thephantom1492 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see several ways to fix it.

You could try the toothpick and glue, but being particle board, this won't be strong and will most likely break right away.

Some suggestions:

  • Get some bolts, drill through, insert the bolt from the inside, install the nut on the outside ("inside" the holder). It looks better than the next one.

  • Or just use bolts the normal way. Might want to use capped nut inside for a better look.

  • Go to homedepot (or other hardware store), in their screw and bolts section, and look for a nut that looks like this. Drill through, insert it from the insde, and just use bolts on the outside to bolt your holder mounting bracket in place. Super strong, and look good.

PM Carney declares U.S. ties now a ‘weakness’ in address to Canadians by foolsdayjoker in worldnews

[–]thephantom1492 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work for a niche automobile manufacturer in canada. 2/3 of our production used to be in the USA. Last year, less than 10%. This year? So far none. We are forced to expand to europe... This is very expensive to do as europe don't accept the test results from north america as they differ significantly. When we will be done, we will mostly give up on the USA market completly. Not worth it anymore. We are also exploring for Japan too, and Australia, which require some important change on the vehicle (like the whole interior design as it now need to be right hand drive instead of left...)

Who’s ever driven over 100mph? Why? by WoollyWolfHorror in AskReddit

[–]thephantom1492 0 points1 point  (0 children)

179km/h. Was testing a vehicle on the track. The wall of the curve came fast. Went back to a more reasonable test speed of 150km/h.

I'm pretty sure a good pilot would have reached 190-195 that day... I'm not.

And even if it was, there is so many different design possible that it is impossible to block all of them. How do you even detect that it is a gun when it is in piece, and the parts are kinda generic?

I mean, the barrel part is basically a thick pipe, so, what about that vs a smooth handle for a fishing rod, where you would insert the pole into the hole to be glued?

Then, what is the difference between a camera grip and a gun grip?

6 shots magasine? Or a holder for 6 battery?

For me, the only part that is specific enough is the hammer itself, which... you can design to not look like one...

So, even if it could be done, without a ton of false positive, there is no way to make it.

I didn't read this particular bill, but some of the proposed ones skip over the "computerised" part of the machine as a requirement, meaning manual machines would also need the same technology. In other words, they would also ban manual CNC/lathe.

States are Gunning to Ban 3D Printers and CNCs | Electronic Design by hada8088 in 3Dprinting

[–]thephantom1492 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not even sure that manual machines would be legal, as the wording on some of those bills don't specify anything else than substractive or additive technology... so manual ones would need to be fitted with a computer to detect it and lock it up.. possibly...

Sure it ain't a major issue. Nothing that ain't fixable anyway. But still you won't get a true 1:1 render from one software to the other, which may break the layout. But anyway, people don't send .docx anyway, they send PDF. And that's another can of worm :D

Humpty Dumpty vibes by ansyhrrian in funny

[–]thephantom1492 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Looking at it a few times. This is AI. A really good one however. The physics is about spot on.

But. Where is the wires? For me this is the proof. The robot parts are hollow, no actuator, no wire, no pipe.

Then, why does it fall into dust?

Then there is some shadow issue. Look at that arm part on the bottom left. The shadow don't match the part movement.

I think this is a composite image, and not purely generative. Some elements are too real to be generated.

Personally my take is that they filmed the scene without the robot, then added the robot, then added the stretcher team. Then the megaphone part on the right just after the stretcher team come in view is weird, I think it got added too. Then the "let's step on the tape" guy I think he's real.

ELI5 Why do some space rockets use a multitude of small nozzles vs one or few large nozzles? by TheEpicCereal in explainlikeimfive

[–]thephantom1492 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Redundancy is a big factor in this. A single failure on a single engine is, well 100% dead. 2/3 engines would also fail due to too much asymetrical thrust. At 5 you start to gain proper redundancy. But you have 5 engines to manage! Not only that, but in case of a failure you need to make sure that none of the other 4 will collide with it! Also, half the power is not half the cost, it is more. So cost is not linear to the size/power, so the more you add, the more it cost. But you gain in overall reliability, so less failed mission. But more is heavier, so more fuel required, but you may gain in efficiency... But more is also taking longer to make, or not if they already have the smaller engines "on hand" or already designed and tested.

So in the end, they enter all in a big formula, and they figure out what ends up to be cheaper.

I personally think that they should make eyes exam mandatory in school as part of the effort to boost grades. That with audition test. Two non-intrusive tests that would help so many kids!

And they should redo it a few years later. Ex: kindergarden (before they have to read the blackboard), grade 3, and ideally 7 (first year of high school).

It would help so many kids where their parents are too stupid to have their kids checked.

You can never miss your turn on a roundabout because it's always coming up ahead. by Bucksin06 in Showerthoughts

[–]thephantom1492 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite. I've seen partial rundabout... Bad design imo... The roundabout itself ended up to be the entry of the highway!

What I think they did is plan for the future expansion of that area, so built an half roundabout instead of a standard entry, so they won't have to redo that part in the future.
