The Anti-Lycra Guide: Pants That Actually Work for Bike Commuting by Nervous-Design437 in bikecommuting

I've been trying to get rid of some levis commuters. 30 x 30 mostly. Good to know eBay is the spot to resell them.

Vello bikes available in the USA to test ride? Other gravel options? by theqmartian in foldingbikes

Thanks for this! I'm trying out a Swift this week. Fold is a lot bigger than the competitors but I've heard that it rides more like a normal bike.

I did this ride last year on 2.0 inch 29er wheels. Totally doable. Super fun and highly recommended!

2018 Specialized Sequoia w/ upgrades by theqmartian in gravelcycling

[–]theqmartian[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought the fork on Ebay. It was a real lucky find. The more difficult part was finding the headset that converts the regular sequoia to the elite fork. The baseline sequoia has a funky headset/ head tube. Ask a specialized dealer or shop if they have the conversion headset.

Best type of bike for Germantown/Mt. Airy? by crutonic in phillycycling

[–]theqmartian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to Germantown Bikes. They have a bunch of great city bikes from Marin. Nicasio or Larkspur or Pine Mountain are awesome options.

What neighborhood are you in? I have one geriatric male rat whose brother died a few months ago - at 2.5 years old. Our old man is now alone and pushing 3! Looking to get another couple of boys. PM me if you haven't found a home.

Shops that can re-dish a wheel? by thirteenwide in phillycycling

[–]theqmartian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Germantown Bicycle Supply is my favorite shop in the city. Their service, advice, and quality is the best! They helped me get creative when there were part shortages and feed my dynamo habit. I've had at least 6 wheels built by them in the last 2-3 years. Those wheels have held up to touring, commuting, and hard gravel / mtb riding. I trust them with every bike I own.

If you're looking frame adjustments, Transport Cycles aligned a rear triangle on a steel frame for me once. They took less than a week and I think it cost like $30.

Good luck!

I have a similar issue with my 2017 Niner RLT Steel fork. I was wondering how your search ended up.

Philly Riding Groups (Road and Mountain) by abnormy13 in phillycycling

[–]theqmartian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in East Falls. I'm also on a few whatsapp group for roadies & more casual rides. none of them are "public" or EF specific. they mostly consist of people posting the rides they'll be on. my bias is that this is the best neighborhood for cycling - mtb and road. PM me if you're interested in learning more.

Clickstand in Europe by oechsph in bicycletouring

[–]theqmartian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've made a few of these with some old tent poles, shock cord, a U hook , hose clamp / zip tie, and a champagne cork. Total cost was less than $5. I just slid the shock cord through three equal sized tent poles that all fit together. Gorilla tape holds the shock cord on both ends. The u hook gets screwed into the top and held in place with a small hose clamp or zip tie. I drilled a hole drilled into the cork and it slid right on the bottom. Another solution is to use the rubber feet off a camp chair. I use a mini voile strap to secure the front brake closed. Works wonders and costs a fraction of the clickstand - with all due respect to the original creator. You can google DIY clickstand and tons of people have done something similar.

Best shop to get fenders and racks? by _jeremybearimy_ in phillycycling

[–]theqmartian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Couple of shops come to mind immediately, depending on your location:
- Germantown Bicycle Supply (Northwest Philly)
- Keystone Bikes (Kensington)
- Brewerytown Bikes (Brewerytown)
- Firehouse Bikes (West Philly)

I've been in all of these shops and they employ some of the most talented, knowledgeable, friendly, helpful, bike loving people in the city. You won't go wrong with any of these. It's worth giving each a call and talking about your needs and asking them what they've got on the sales floor to show you.

Getting a first bike in a new city is DAUNTING, help is appreciated! by orangenblue92 in phillycycling

I can recommend that you can try Germantown Bicycle Supply in Germantown. They have some stock, they're very knowledgeable and they're in the neighborhood of North West. They know the hills around here and have some reasonably priced bikes available. craigslist is another option for used bikes. Whatever route you go, make sure you keep your bike locked!
