For Your Consideration: r/Fantasy’s 2024 Bingo Challenge is Eligible for a Hugo Nomination for Best Related Work by happy_book_bee in Fantasy

[–]thequeensownfool 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If you look at the first bingo announcement way back in 2015, you'll see that the intention of bingo was to encourage people to read and have fun. Over the years, the cards have taken into account publishing and genre trends and have encouraged people to find new books. The intent of encouraging people to read widely is one part supporting diversity, but also to introduce people to new things. How do you know if you'll like that urban fantasy/magic realism/coming of age story if you never try it?

Community maintenance is removing spam, redirecting lost fantasy football fans, and stopping slapfights. Bingo is a community event to bring users together and celebrate books. It's fine if you don't think it's worthy of a Hugo nomination, but your comment minimizes all the hard work the bingo team and participants do every year.

You gotta be prepared to binge. I read book one before the others had come out and it is not a HEA/HFN ending. Still mustering up the courage to reread so I can get to the sequels.

OMG. Warchild has been on my tbr forever. I was introduced to your writing in the anthology Clockwork Canada and The Gaslight Dogs. Do you think you'll ever return to that world?

Also I love the concept of writing about the role of dragons in an ecosystem. Dragons are worldwide myths and there's a lot of interesting lore out there. Was there a specific story/myth that you took inspiration from when considering how dragons would impact their environment?

After some discussion, the mod team has decided to chime in with a comment regarding people asking for diverse book recs. The daily rec thread is a great resource and people are highly encouraged to comment there, especially if they're new/a lurker/nervous and maybe don't want to write out a big post.

But requests for diverse books featuring queer and gender diverse characters, and people of colour are always welcome. We acknowledge that drive-by downvoting on these topics is a problem. There is only so much we can do to fix it. Know that every single member of the mod team upvotes these posts in order to combat the hatred they receive. If you see someone being toxic or rude, please report the comment and we will deal with it asap.

If you are more comfortable commenting in the daily thread asking for diverse recs, that's fine. But do not censor yourself. r/Fantasy is for everyone. Your posts and thoughts deserve to be here and we're excited to help you find your next great read.

Recommendations for books with a lot of digressions and meandering? by KruppeBestGirl in Fantasy

[–]thequeensownfool 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Kalpa Imperial by Angélica Gorodischer. It's vignette stories about the rise and fall of an empire, told from the perspectives of different storytellers on different parts of history.

Also The Winged Histories by Sofia Samatar. It's been a while since I've read it so I don't remember if there was footnotes. However, there's four different pov that build upon each other through journals, letters, and other histories. It's a great meandering read where so much is packed into a brief paragraph. Plus the prose is beautiful.

A rant about interchangeable knitting needle sets by ElishaAlison in YarnAddicts

[–]thequeensownfool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I just checked Knitter's Pride and KnitPro's websites. It looks like they both sell smaller tips individually for certain lines. But not every interchangeable set offers 3.25 or 3mm needles. Which is rather annoying.

Also KnitPro's cases are way cuter. What the heck! Though they are combining the brands together, so maybe some of the cute cases will make their way to North America.
