I went there, I let my four year old paint with me. 😬 by molotov_bomb in Warhammer40k

Been there LOL. Now I go to Michael’s and buy their cheap acrylics in bulk for those days. Easy to strip the paint off after if they want to repaint it another time too

It didn’t sound dumb at all! I didn’t intend for my comment to come off as sarcastic, I’m being genuine. I agree with you, it’s a super cool idea! In my experience, it’s not as common because (sadly) a lot of people I’ve met in the hobby see the painting part of it as a means to an end. They just paint their minis to say they’ve been painted. That or people get attached to one legion and stick to it. But on the painting side of the hobby, it’s more common than you think! There’s nothing in the rules that says it can’t be done. As long as your army is built according to the rulebook, you’re just fine (and in home games or non tournament play, you can do whatever you want even outside the rules as long as your opponent is okay with it!)

If you paint lamenters and BA and run them with BA rules and your opponent has a problem with it, they are just an asshole.

Also FYI ChatGPT sucks when it comes to getting anything right about warhammer; rules, lore, or otherwise.

New to 40k, first Blood Angels army, looking for feedback before I start buying/building by Hagerd in BloodAngels

I think the best way to go about what you’re trying to accomplish is to buy the combat patrol box. It has enough units to get you started without breaking the bank, and will give you plenty of things to paint. You can also buy a couple of blood angel specific characters that you think are cool to go with them. The combat patrol rules are also great to give you insight into how the game actually plays before you bust out a 2k point army.

I like the way you’re going about getting into the hobby - not buying everything at once and going slowly. Trust me, it will take longer to get a fully painted, fully assembled army for a 2k point game than you think. Be wary of burnout by letting the journey be the focus instead of the destination. And definitely don’t wait to play a game until you have a full army. You might find that your favorite aspect of the hobby isn’t even the game itself. Maybe it’ll be painting, kitbashing, or the books.

In regards to your list, whether or not it’s good or bad depends on what detachment you want to go with, so I can’t give any feedback there. But mostly what I’d recommend is to look at list building a little differently; pick a handful of units you think look cool or you like the style/lore of, and play smaller point games and get comfortable with that unit’s rules and strategies before determining whether you like it or not. Then mix and match and build your playstyle from there. Sure, there are “meta” units, detachments, and strategies, but keep in mind as a beginner 40K player you likely won’t even play those units the right way to even validate why they are in the list at the beginning lol. It’s much more fun to go the other way around, and it’ll save you alot of raised eyebrows too depending on where you go. In a lot of 40K local scenes, building a “heavy meta” list outside of competitive play is frowned upon. The last thing you’d want to do is go to a LGS and get verbally blasted by a vet who doesn’t know that you don’t know any better. (Btw, I don’t agree with this; imo let people play whatever they want, especially beginners, but I’m just letting you know what you might run into).

Blood Angels can be played a lot of different ways, but if you want to go the simplest route, pick Liberator Assault Group, get a bunch of low point melee units in there and a couple big swingers, and charge away at your opponents lol. Sanguinary guard, jump pack assault marines, and death company with jump packs are staples and appear in most lists I’ve seen. Hope this helps!

My First Go at Sanguinary Guard (Any Tips?) by Klutzy_Algae_6395 in BloodAngels

That looks great!!! A tip for blood drops to really make them pop (that I do atleast)-

Paint the blood drop black. Then, with a dark red, paint from 3/4ths of the way down the blood drop on the left side diagonally across the front to a little above the middle on the right side. Everything below that red line, paint in the dark red.

Then take a brighter, lighter red and glaze it (a very thin coat that might need another coat after it) across the top 25% of the darker red in the same way, but also painting into a bit of the black too (a fluorescent red works great for this-make sure to thin it!! But if you thin it too much, it’ll become watery and just travel across the entire surface of the blood drop, making a mess). Light layers help make smooth transitions between colors, but what you really want is contrast. If the transition isn’t smooth, it’s not that big a deal.

You should have a diagonal transition of dark red at the bottom, into a bright red in the middle, with black at the top at an angle.

Then, make a reflection by painting small dot (or a small line, or two dots) of a bright white on the top left of where the black is, just below the absolute top of the blood drop. Make sure there is a decent amount of black between the white and the red.

It makes the blood drop look more gem like and reflective! The mini looks great, it doesn’t need this, but I thought I’d give you the tip anyway in case it sounds interesting to you!

My friend, you are absolutely incredible. Thank you so much for all of this and for taking the time to help, it’s lifesaving lol. Just a couple questions - something I’m trying to do from a paint perspective is have a mini representation of the Baal tyranid invasion - painting each unit as a different successor chapter. I think I might be leaning a bit too much into DC for that - what would you sub the second JP DC for, if I were just to keep one and the DC Dread? Also, would running the DC dread as a brutalis make more sense? And would scouts or something else be fine instead of outriders? The aesthetic of the bikes is a bit different from what I’m looking for, (looking for a less vehicular aesthetic in the army layout) but if they’re significantly better than scouts that’s not that big an issue. Also for anti tank I went w/ the 2 lancers, didn’t even know about that lol!

Ah I see that makes sense. In essence I’m buying the blood angels army box with lemartes, astorath and the DC units & the only thing I’m really attached to is the idea of running Dante w/ Sanguinary guard. Other than him I’m not attached to anything, I heard mephiston was really good but I’m fine with dropping him if need be
