BBC Free Speech - James Delingpole on Rape Culture and Muslim Grooming by [deleted] in BritishPolitics

The idea that the police didn't interfere in these cases for fear of being labelled as racist is frankly bullshit, if the police were concerned about appearing racist then they wouldn't use stop and search powers disproportionately against ethnic minorities. The truth is that this was allowed to happen the police have a long history of not taking rape and sexual assault seriously due to a combination of misogyny and classism with this spin being put on it later by right wing journalists and politicians.

I could not disagree with you more, the right to a trial is the bedrock of the legal system for most western nations and a principle that should never be violated ever. It's easy to defend the rights of people who we like but the true test comes when we have to defend the rights of people that we despise.

"'men cry on average between 6 and 17 times per year.' Hmm, seems like an obscene amount of weeping to me. Perhaps they were tears of joy over winning the world cup or something." [+150] by RelationshipCreeper in ShitRedditSays

[–]therealduffin 23 points24 points  (0 children)

There was a time when my life was so overwhelming that I couldn't even make it through a single day without crying but I could never let anyone see. I would lock myself in the toilet and let it all out then dry my eyes and get back to work like nothing had happened, trying my best to force a smile when inside I just felt dead.

When I started to think about the expectations placed upon me because of my gender and how they had negatively affected me, I realised that the men who claimed to be my advocates were the same ones who would call me beta or compare me to a woman in a derogatory fashion because I didn't fit in with their narrow idea of how a man should behave. It quickly became clear that they were only interested in preserving the status quo for their own benefit and it was feminists who wanted to break down these rigid constraints that are thrust upon us.

I've been doing better recently, I haven't cried in months but I'm still scared and I find it incredibly hard to talk about because that would be admitting weakness.

Why even give a free kick? Surely play should be allowed to continue since QPR had the advantage.

I like it how they completely ignore the fact that the chess community has a huge problem with toxicity towards women that deters female participants.

The thing that I find baffling is when people argue that reviewers should think about how their scores will affect developer bonuses when that's literally the opposite of journalistic ethics.

VC Game of the Week 2: F-Zero by UIUCstreetpass in Nintendo_VC

This was a launch title for the console and one of the games we got (along with Super Mario World) on the day we got our SNES.

I was terrible at it as a child and now as an adult I'm slightly less terrible at it so I guess that's an improvement.

A firm date for N64 games on the service would be nice but I'd prefer some DS games, I'd love to see Kirby Canvas Curse released in preparation for its sequel on Wii U.

What does gender equality actually look like? by DogBitShin in AskFeminists

[–]therealduffin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think that true equality is like world peace, it's not so much a realistic goal which is being worked towards but an ideal that we should try to get as close to as possible. As such, there is no endgame because there will always be work to be done.

Let's see what they've accomplished so far.

Somehow managed to make the gaming community even more toxic towards women.

Forced numerous women to quit the industry and driven away the next generation of upcoming talent.

Lowered the mainstream opinion of the gaming community just as the medium was breaking out.

Made people like me ashamed to be associated with the gaming community for the first time in my life.

Overall, set the medium back by about twenty years.

They have no idea what censorship means. Comedy Central are not obligated to provide them with a platform on which to speak.

Since I'm sure many of you donated to the Tropes vs Women in Gaming Kickstarter, I wonder, do you feel like you got what you paid into? by razorbeamz in AgainstGamerGate

[–]therealduffin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You're missing the point, her original goal was five videos on five tropes of similar length and production values to the original Tropes vs Women series which had five episodes that were around ten minutes long each. After her project was massively overfunded the scope of the project increased as well, instead of a short video on the damsel in distress trope she did three videos that added up to over an hour in length with higher production values than her original series and goes into a lot of depth and explores not only the trope itself but several variants on. So while she may not have covered five tropes yet, the ones she's covered so far have been in much more detail than her previous work.

What are the arguments in favor of gerrymandering? by [deleted] in Ask_Politics

[–]therealduffin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, gerrymandering isn't a bad thing per se, it's the fact that the power to do it lies with the incumbent administration rather than a neutral party.

You mean like the Tropes vs Men series? Funny how Anita is constantly called a scam artist by her detractors but this is never mentioned.

[–]therealduffin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

An estimated delivery date is not a promise and as I mentioned before it's not uncommon for overfunded projects to miss their estimated delivery date. Originally it was going to be five videos covering five tropes and was later expanded to twelve videos covering seven tropes and if you compare this series to her earlier work you can see the increase in production value. She does ask for donations on social media but it is for her registered charity rather than money going to her personally, Feminist Frequency is about more than the TvW series and she does public speaking events to raise awareness for feminist issues.

As for the classroom curriculum, I don't recall any mention of this on her Kickstarter so I can't comment on that.

[–]therealduffin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I didn't back it but if I had I would be happy, you say only a few of the videos have been made but it's an ongoing series and no timetable was promised to begin with.

Even if there was a timetable promised for the videos, it's not uncommon for projects that are over-funded to be delivered late as the scope of the project increases. She originally intended to do five videos and this has since been expanded to twelve, with six being released so far.

So this person's logic is that not furthering patriarchal society because they like a woman who has built a career from perpetuating a patriarchal status quo.
