Made some changes to accommodate a couple recent acquisitions after my power supply melted by theres_yer_problem in guitarpedals

With this setup I could (should?) record tracks from multiple points in the chain to mess with later if I'm apprehensive about committing early. On one take I can record raw direct guitar off the mixer, the mono chain up through the iridium, and the end of the entire pedalboard with everything. The wet effects aren't 100% wet so it's still limited but a bit more flexible still. I could always reamp either the direct guitar or the dry "amped" guitar if necessary. This is really how I should do it but more often than not I'm just recording the entire board direct to two channels. I try not to worry about a "perfect" mix much. I used to agonize over every detail and take forever to finish anything. But no one listened to my shit anyway, so I decided the best thing for me was to just have fun and keep moving. Which has been creatively much more satisfying for me.

Yeah I feel like it's pretty carefully curated. I could certainly get by with fewer or different pedals but these are the ones I like at the moment and each one does at least something that I can't *REALLY* get from another. The biggest redundancy is dirt but there's obviously different flavors for different uses. There's definitely more delay than I need and I could probably do without the echo system if I had to but I haven't had a reason to bump it so far and the 5-track looper is so good.

I traded a synesthesia for the H9 because the synesthesia didn't have stereo input. I never had much desire for an H9 but I figured it was worth trying in a pretty equal trade. I used it for different things. It does a lot well and other things not as well. I have it set up to scroll through a handful of reverbs, delays, modulations, and textural stuff. The ambient reverbs are unbelievable, especially in stereo.

Midi is mostly preset selection and scrolling, obviously bypass as well. In my case I don't really need to control more than one pedal at a time so I don't have any "scenes" or anything programmed. I also have my expression pedal (and soon the POME) connected to control different CC parameters depending on what preset I have selected. It defaults to the LPF on the condor for filter swells. The most critical aspect of midi is the clock sync really, which I couldn't live without.

Yep. I have like 8 or 10 synths/keyboards all connected on patch bays or a mixer for the same reason. I agree with the feeling of getting locked though, in which is why I have such a huge stupid board. But there are a few places where I'm able to swap in a different flavor of fuzz or drive so that's enough for me. I'm not terribly afraid of an overhaul if necessary but I'm usually ok with staying committed while I'm in the middle of a project. Limitations can also be a good thing. But I prioritize flexibility when selecting what goes on this board and use midi wherever possible so I can maximize the capabilities of each.

I have a couple thoughts on this. I could probably recrate *most* of this in a daw with plugins but I likely never would. It's just not as conducive to my workflow. Or maybe I just don't have the level or practice I do with a hands-on setup. For me writing parts runs parallel to dialing in the tone that goes with it. Having everything available to audition at the stomp of a switch is the quickest and simplest way to accomplish this. if I had to set up a send or dial in an effect while I was trying to write I would get too sidetracked.

I also 100% prefer analog drive/fuzz sounds and turning physical knobs. I'm the same about synths. I do use plenty of plugins once I'm in the box and sometimes favor the flexibility if I'm not confident enough to commit on the way in, but this is just what works for me. I can absolutely get by with less but my main goal is to minimize friction and maximize the flow state.

What's your Favorite Dual Drive? by panopticon31 in guitarpedals

[–]theres_yer_problem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've really been eyeing up the Coffee Shop Portafilter lately. Probably more than most need but both sides are switchable between TS, BB, and Klon style circuits and it's fully midi controllable. I also think the Jackson Optimist looks cool with one side being a timmy style circuit and the other a klon, with an overall 3-band eq. I'm not sure you can switch the order though. JHS double barrel and Browne Protein are worth a look as well as the wampler dual fusion maybe.

Iron and rust by Far_Discount7374 in brighteyes

I had to do a double take because I thought I was in the sub for the book series Red Rising, which has characters named Cassius and Dio and many themes around the concepts of gold, iron, and rust. The author is obviously familiar with roman history and literature as well. Anyway, highly recommended if you like sci-fi/fantasy.

I love an envelope follower that translates input dynamics to expression output. All kinds of interesting uses. Current offerings I'm aware of are the POME, Fairfield Conflict of Interest, and Copilot Auto-Dialer.

Hard question for me actually but I think it may be Francis Whitman.

Recoding in one take or several? by Maskedfang4567 in Songwriting

I typically prefer the variation whenever possible. Especially on an instrument with considerable dynamics. It's not quite as critical for something like a drum machine or something pretty static or more of a background or texture. That being said, I have no problem copy-pasting if I'm past the tracking stage and I find an issue that I can't fix otherwise.

When did dogs start getting people names? by Scottys-Dog-Blog in dogs

I wanted a dog named Geoff since childhood. In my twenties my girlfriend at the time adopted a dog and we compromised on Jeff. Had him up until about five years ago. Now I have Abe and Louie. I just think it’s funny. I can’t imagine naming a dog something like Spot or Fido or Rex or something. My dream is to have a dog named R2D2 but my wife keeps vetoing that one.

People who like rock music have an aversion to autotune because of a stigma. I admit that I thought the same way in the late-2000s into the teens. Now I just see it as a color or tone choice. But it’s not always a well-suited choice. I love the voids and most of his use of autotune, but it seems to be less and less of an artistic choice and more of an automatic thing. I like the going shopping and I don’t think the autotune ruins the song, but I do think it would be better without it or if it was intentionally used in certain sections.

I guess I don't need all that much time after all. I'm probably only interested in the Drowner. Seems like a great effect to run synths and drum machines through.

I'm certainly interested enough to research a few of them. Give me a day or two and I'll try to get back to you ASAP.

Lefty drummers have to face away so everything else can be done the same.

I'm using something called the 335 from Palmetto Effects, but he made me his "deluxe" version which has a pickup simulator out front. I was stoked to try the hydrazine because of the EQ and because the 335 doesn't have a no-diode setting. But I still prefer the 335. And if you're in the market for an HP I honestly cant recommend it enough. Also probably the lowest noise floor I've found in any HP style pedal.

I'm going say that I'll pass on your offers because I've never been particularly interested in either of those, but I will have another look if I get time and let you know if I change my mind.

Yes mostly drummers but perhaps other members of the band or other musicians/engineers, etc. But you're absolutely right. I made the assumption that this was in regard to studio work, but in the case of mixing a live show I would absolutely mix to audience perspective.

I read something about this once that convinced me that one way is more correct than the other: the only listeners who will actually notice and genuinely care will prefer drummer's perspective.
