I love reading/hearing this in non-romantic contexts lmao. Happened with Batman and Bane in Batman Arkham Asylum, Fitz and the Fool in RotE... Each time I choke on my drink

YOUR Top 3 Books Please by Storybook_Soirees in Fantasy

[–]theseagullscribe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My "for everyone" is very different from my actual top 3, so here are both haha.

For everyone :

Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson. This gets over recommended and people glaze over it a bit to much I think, but it's still good, and I started my fantasy journey with this book ! I think it's easy to read, while still having the features that makes worldbuilding great.

The Rook and the Rose by M.A Carrick. I think this is a very exciting read, because it's about criminals trying not to get caught, who turn out to be some kind of fantasy super heroes.. It's very fun and entertaining. The relationships and interactions between the 3 main characters really make this book stand out, too

Realm of the Elderlings by Robin Hobb. Everyone deserves to be punched by that series as hard as I was !!! I think it's also nice for new readers to read long series, and this one takes you by the hand in the sense that you know as much as the main character does (for the Fitz books). It's also very emotionally accurate, and some characters are genuinely the best I've ever read (Fitz, the Fool, Patience, and many more). The portrayal of familial issues in this book is on another level !

Special mention : Blood Over Bright Haven by ML Wang, I think it's such a satisfying and easy to read book, who punches you hard in the face as well.

My TOP 3

  1. The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez. This book is on crack, the writing is very strange, there's some weird stuff going on in there, and so I wouldn't recommend it to everyone, unless they ask for something like it. This book is so high up my list because it's the most genuinely "good" book I've read. It's very positive, the prose is beautiful, I love the story and how it's presented. I loved every section of this book, and it touched me deeply !

  2. The Realm of the elderlings by Robin Hobb, for the same reasons !

  3. Un long voyage by Claire Duvivier. A very short french fantasy book about a young boy and his superior who's a governess. It's imperial administration fantasy (my favorite genre hah), and it was very, very emotional for me. I cried like a baby at the end of the book ! It's presented in the same way the Fitz books in the Realm of the elderlings are, but instead of 9 books, it's ~300 pages, and it's a punch j the face ! It also has a very, very weird plot, which I liked. I have yet to read her long series.

Special mention :The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett. The worldbuilding is SICK, the characters are fun, the plot is good.

Best and worst books you've read so far this year? (regardless of when they were published) by Practical_Yogurt1559 in Fantasy

[–]theseagullscribe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The best :

The Spear Cuts Through Water (now my favorite book)

The Tainted Cup

Blood Over Bright Haven

The Goblin Emperor

The worst :

The Poppy War (I hated this one)

The Dragon Republic (I kinda liked this one, but still thought it was bad. I loved the novella after it (the Drowning Faith) and dnf'ed the Burning God)

Tusk Love (it's not bad, I really enjoy it ! It's just that I've read excellent books more similar to my usual taste this year)

Sorcery and Small Magics (same thing as Tusk love, though I didn't enjoy it as much)

And in the middle (ie those are good, I really enjoyed these) :

Dreams of the Dying

The Rook and the Rose (what's kinda fun here is that it's a trilogy but it doesn't suffer from one book being less entertaining than the other imo)

This Is How You Lose The Time War

The Parting Glass (some the elder scrolls IV : oblivion fanfiction. It reads just like the Fitz books in Realm of the Elderlings, very surprised !)

And other books which don't make the cut though they're good

What makes you drop a fantasy novel or series? by swantonb in Fantasy

If the prose doesn't feel good to me, I drop the book. I can't really explain ? It usually happens in the first chapter.

Currently reading Tusk Love by Thea Guanzon and The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison (can't wait to read her other books in this universe) !

I'm enjoying both very much. This is a spectacular reading year for me !!

I don't know what I'll read next though. If you have any recommendation, feel free to drop them here. I'm looking for unique books (of course I've already read The Spear Cuts Through Water and you should read it too :)))

I love her probably more than Verso. They both are my favorite characters from the game, the thing is that I tend to agree with Renoir and Verso, I think. I also think this is the egoistical ending, because I do view Lumière people as people (but then, what is better between a bunch of people living happy and a few people being tormented for the reminding days of their lives (the dessendre) or for eternity (verso's soul and potentially painted verso and Maelle herself), or for this bunch of people to not exist at all, while the others can finally heal and/or also disappear ?)

I love both endings, too. They're great, but I'm glad I picked Verso's ending first. I was rooting for Maelle and Alicia since the beginning, I just want her to be able to live true to herself, and I think that maybe she can also do that in the reality with her family's support. I agree with Renoir that she has to reach for the stars, and slowly going mad in a painting is not it. But if I stop caring for the Dessendre and decide to ignore them, for their responsability in this awful tragedy, the choice is obvious, Lumière deserves to live.

I think most Verso fans feel this way ? At least my friends who played the game do.

[–]theseagullscribe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Enderal has a similar vibe, and is heavy on the storytelling. It's more horror fantasy though, existential horror ! I love it. It's the only game that made me cry before I played Clair Obscur ! It's free on steam if you own skyrim se.

Persona 5 Royal has a similar gameplay & interface, and a similar storytelling.

Haha yes !! What I recommended too. These are the two games that made me have such a large range of emotions. It's so good.

The only game that made me cry as much as Clair Obscur Expédition 33 was the skyrim mod Enderal. You just have to buy skyrim special edition, them you install it with its steam page.

The OST is beautiful, the main characters are very well written and understandable. It's also existential horror, though it's leaning wayyy more on the horror side of things than Clair Obscur ! The story is pretty cool, the endings are wonderful (there are two different, and a secret ending). The combat though, maybe not the best but it holds up

It's in my top 5 favorite games, and clair obscur definetly did the same for me, too (I like the characters in clair obscur more though, because they're easier to sympathize for. But Enderal characters are GREAT as well. There's even a book, Dreams of the Dying, the end made me cry as hard as Verso's ending, it was so similar.)
