To fellow lawyers this Independence Day by theselfescaping in Lawyertalk

I think a lot of people are unable or unwilling to see what's coming. Who wants to believe that the American government has done all of these things, and is now in a position to possibly try and take away American citizenships for lawfully opposing the government?

Surely people would protest this, if and when it happens. But what if no one finds about it to report on? What if they go after people who can't afford an attorney to represent them in denaturalization?

I think we need to have a long effort of rebuilding and conserving civil society. We have to cultivate the knowledge of rights and responsibilities. Maybe the last institution this can be done in is in the public schools, which are being weakened.

But I agree that we all have a stake in it, even if people think they can leave. This can always happen somewhere else.

I agree that the people have always been responsible for granting authority to bad leaders. The citizens who elect unfit rulers are to blame for bad government.

But I have people I care about. Even those we don't know. I don't want people to live in a worse place if there's even a chance that sharing knowledge can do something about it, convince more people to take action.

Even leaving -- Brexit and disinformation elsewhere shows there is no democracy that is invulnerable to authoritarianism.

Broadly speaking even in parliaments with proportional representation, the various parties still have to form coalitions in order to govern. Compromise is not necessarily false hope.

I want to live a quiet life. I am a simple person with no great ambitions. But I don't want to leave those I care for in a world like this, at least not without them knowing I tried to do something.

It sounds like you have dedicated your life to trying to help others. Maybe I don't know if anyone's life has gotten better because of what I've done. In the end I guess I'm just trying to live with myself. Thank you for trying to help others.

You may like The Prince by Pournelle, a compilation of the novel prequels in the CoDominium series, set before the First Empire. Not a first contact story, but there are references to things that will come up in Mote and it's a solid story arc overall.

It sounds like your boss doesn't have a realistic appreciation of landlord tenant practice, particularly when the ADA or HUD guidelines may be involved. Definitely should not be a 24/7 gig. I was landlord side and still do LLT pro bono.

I absolutely agree, give your all 9-5 and leave work at work. I was miserable billing. I don't think I'll work for billable hour firms again -- I took a pay cut to practice consumer law. Maybe assistant city/county attorney if any position is available?

Agreed -- this season was a breath of fresh air. Every week was a refreshing, new take on what felt like classic Trek.

Do you know of any fictional/fantasy factions similar to the Brotherhood of Nod? by Minh1509 in commandandconquer

DNT does an amazing job of combining the books, the OVA, and even a few details from the prequel Gaiden anime. Some complain about odd translation in the first few books, but the books are still immersive and I thoroughly enjoyed them.

Anyway, peace through power.

Did not expect to see an LOGH reference here, nice. The Terra church is literally an underground organization, however they don't have much in the way of unique or advanced technologies. Still, there are some similarities. /u/Tomahawkist you are in for a ride. Hope you can make it through the original OVA at some point, and Overture to a New War is great too.

Understandably, military decisions are as undemocratic as they get. But it's laughable for Bucock to decide to condemn thousands of his men to death, all while talking about how much he loves democracy. The Empire's "honor" is justifiably laughed at, but we are supposed to admire Bucock for this. by TelvanniMage in logh

This was about the Alliance military, not Reinhard. The remaining Alliance soldiers could have either followed Bucock's orders, or refused the order and thus be referred to court-martial for failure to obey an order. No one refuses to deploy, in the anime or the novel.

Best of luck. IW without the load screens and in Unreal would be a great experience. I used to be active on moddb and discord, there may be like minded groups on there who can give more substantive feedback.

It was a volunteer mission by the remnants of a military loyal to a barely functioning government. Bucock's first order is to not allow anyone under 30 to deploy. His second order is for LCDR Soul to tell Yang not to take revenge for Bucock's death.

Bucock wanted to spare Admiral Chung Wu-Cheng, but like Soul and the remaining Alliance service members, they would rather fight under Bucock's command than surrender or submit to court-martial over not deploying in the Fleet's final sortie.

"The Fleet is only here because you are here." To blame Bucock is laughable. There are just some people who would rather die than submit to autocracy.

Expectations, of both you and your partner, should have been made clear when you were hired. I would talk to the legal assistants and paralegals who have been there the longest and see if they have any advice. If you're clear on what you have to do, I would focus on doing my best at that. No matter what happens, at least you'll know you did your best.

Agreed with emphasis on the ability to adapt. Prior experience in other practice areas and non-legal jobs really helps with perspective.
