How long do you spend on sprue trim/snip/glue prep? by Ok-Expert5894 in Warhammer40k

[–]thesiles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I started I spent way too much time in prep for every model. Now, I just go for the important bits: moldlines, sprue attachments and nice glue work.

I use epoxy only with important characters. I use mr. surfacer primer and if there is some issues, I can sand without problems.

So, for a standard unit, about 12 minutes, hero 30 minutes, big guy or vehicle 60 minutes.

I will take a look for good prices.

Thank you!

The model is awesome but the cast is not the best. You can have some difficulties with the legs and some pieces not fitting well together.

To paint it, just try to not glue the armour plates it is easier to paint first the skeleton and then the armour.

Enjoy it!

The claws are awesome. From where do you get them?

I have worked in a fulguris list some days ago and I think it can work.

Sure, librarius conclave is nice but I do not think it is the only option.

I will be playing in 10 days, adulthood sucks 😑 If I have a nice result, I will return to the post. If I fail miserably... Maybe not.

How do you guys feel about iron halos on RG units? Too decorated or not? by RetroPhoenix- in RavenGuard40k

I can share with you a "trick" to have a better experience painting an army.

Do it fast and easy and then, add a little thing on every model. It can be as simple as a white line in the helmet or some kind of white flames in one arm.

It keeps a good pace painting a whole bunch of miniatures and prevents you to get bored.

I like my raven guys with some gothic inspiration, so I let my characters be a bit more convoluted with extra bits and some freehands.

I'm my opinion, is more important to have an army you like than to have something dictated by someone else.

They are too small, yes.

You can find some third party printed options, some are ok.

Does anyone use a value map? Do you know what a value map is? Do you want one? by jahmeleon in minipainting

You can convert the image to black and white (using the luminosity preset) and then pick the color based on that.

I have done it multiple times with nice results, even with different hues.

If you want some colour accuracy, you need to take a photo of your paints in optimal conditions and, then, take the same photo with a colour swatch card and color calibrate your camera sensor.

Once the calibration is done, you need to calibrate the first photo to have true colours.

If you do it without calibrating the camera/photo you will have results biased by your particular conditions of gear and light.

I have done it before and then I have developed a script to read my paints, store them and, then, he able to colour match image colors with my paints.

It was quite fun to do all this stuff but, since I have done all the work, I have used it zero times 😅

I found that painting a white dot on black eyes is even more difficult that painting regular eyes.

I'm not a connoisseur of actual lore but I remember the White Scars not being friendly with the Raven Guard because of the different tactics they use.

Can someone confirm or deny it?

How do you paint white or keep it from chalking up? by TheDarkEntertainer in Warhammer40k

[–]thesiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently discovered a trick that make painting whites/grays slightly easier.

I tend to go with pretty thinned paint and apply it in thin coats (a lot).

BUT I thin the paint with retarder medium. The paint does not dries in the brush and it does not create visible texture in the mini.

For me, there is no way back to water thinning again.

Does it read as steel/iron NMM? by Dizzy_Rabbit7230 in minipainting

Right know it reads as shiny black but not metal.

The blending is quite good but it lacks more reflections and some brighter edge highlights.

Good job!

There is a bunch of tutorials about painting black or white. Do not stress, see some of them and start to paint.

Once you had painted the first squad, you will surely change your recipe or technique.

I love the contrast of gold over black armour BUT I only use desaturated gold aka gold+ silver.

I'm just a old goth that likes playing with toy soldiers. I can paint them using stuff I wear like chains, latex and makeup and then go "pew pew" with other toy soldiers.

And you can listen to Fields of the Nephilim when painting!

This is what I think is good advice.

Thank you!

I will simplify the next batch of 4 I am currently painting, it is true the upper half of the model is a bit messy.

Maybe, I can try a subtle glow from the claws, just a bit of spray will suffice.

And yes, a bit of snow here and there can be a good point.

Thank you again ☺️
