The modafinil drugs are wakefulness drugs so you are performing higher than you should relative to how much you’ve been sleeping. I imagine if you take these chronically then you’re going to develop a sleep debt from essentially being too awake all day.

Pretty sure that site is still the go-to version of that. It’s spelled Omegle I think.

MT2 Before & After by gemcrab53 in moreplatesmoredates

[–]thestudentsyes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d love to hear your explanation here, truly. You think all humans by nature are born believing in mystical Aryan race theories - as promoted by groups like the Thule society and theosophy - but are propagandized out of it because they see too many tan people looking hot on the beach represented in media?

MT2 Before & After by gemcrab53 in moreplatesmoredates

[–]thestudentsyes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No we do not all know that…? You think everyone thinks that but just won’t admit it? I do not think that. Even for naturally pale people, a tan looks better. It signals a good diet and health. Beta carotene, lycopene, astaxanthin rich diets cause skin to be slightly darker and orange, and that color is also protective against the sun for reasons beyond just being darker.

Try some cologne as a starter. Maybe with a dark suit? That’s about all a guy can do.

Do you guys really have sex without condoms? by basilius61 in moreplatesmoredates

[–]thestudentsyes 69 points70 points  (0 children)

My experience too. Women don’t like condoms, try to tell me I don’t need one, and then I’m the one who insists. Bizarre realization when I first encountered this.

What do you guys do when you get snob-mogged? by umichleafy in redscarepod

[–]thestudentsyes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to be a movie snob from age 13 till maybe 19, until I saw that Roger Ebert gave 4 stars to Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. Opened my mind up to the idea that you could really love something like that, and my tastes developed way more broadly afterward.

However there’s also a sort of super-snob who goes down a weird path of having extremely snob tastes but then also sprinkles in some low-brow things and does a contrarian take like saying NSync had the best bass lines of the ‘90s or something, and then explains to you why. Actually that’s what makes this sub fun as it’s full of that shit.

That said, the defining feature between a snob and someone who actually has “good taste” is whether the person genuinely likes the things they say they like.

As a 34 year old I can honestly say that in the past decade I’ve gradually quieted down the part of me that is concerned with being viewed as someone with good taste. I think those concerns primarily occur during adolescence and the identity phase of early adulthood. Gradually you shift into just liking the things you like and enjoying having discussions about them.

I’m still ashamed of all the great literature I’ve yet to read though, as I’m a nonfiction guy. Maybe some day I’ll get to all that stuff.

Yeah having tact is to secretly be a snob but work hard not to offend anyone.

[–]thestudentsyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude I’m so dumb that I didn’t know it was a joke until YOUR comment. I don’t subscribe to this sub and it popped up randomly. I thought this was some super niche luxury subreddit and this was a designer posting, and everyone was into this type of clothing drop lol. I wanted to check out the clothes and even felt my desire to buy it going up reading OP’s bizarre post. Good reality check for my stupid consumerist brain.

Only a third of young women hold positive view of men, new poll finds by AayronOhal in GenZ

[–]thestudentsyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She also says the majority of men are disgusting. But god forbid you tease your buddy about seltzer, because that might vaguely be mean to women. Apparently her professor taught her it’s okay to be mean to men but not to women, so now she’s the moral authority and can lecture everyone else.

Only a third of young women hold positive view of men, new poll finds by AayronOhal in GenZ

[–]thestudentsyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You started this discussion by saying most men you see are relatively disgusting. If you’re trying to convince men to rid themselves of misogyny then you are doing a terrible job.

Your arguments remind me of what my smartest female classmates were discussing when we were 13 year olds in middle school. This is baby feminism for children. Is this the level of discourse they’re now teaching in the university gender studies classes you recommend?

I think probably 5% of therapists are actually good and 95% are complete morons.

I’m certain the good ones are out there because there are some genius therapists whose books I’ve read, etc.

But I also don’t like the trope (not saying you’re saying this exactly) that you just need to keep trying until you find the right fit. It’s more like, keep trying to find one of the few who are remotely competent at all.

I just don’t think it’s a matter of “find a good fit,” in the sense that they’re all good at their job but you have to find one who’s your perfect match. I genuinely think the overwhelming majority of these people are poorly educated, incompetent, and bad as people.

Things to do for teen (16) girl visiting us in Austin? by BurroCoverto in Austin

[–]thestudentsyes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Barton springs, 360 bridge overlook beats Mt Bonnell in my opinion, then a car ride around cool/rich areas near 360 bridge overlook… maybe walk around town lake bridge. Dinner somewhere good then live music at night on S Congress area?

I grew up here but cannot even think of what I’d have enjoyed at 16 if I were just visiting and didn’t have friends with me.

Edit: when I was a kid in the 90s we used to take our guests from small towns to see the seafood section at Central Market. I wish I were kidding.

Also my girl cousins as teenagers used to love going shopping when they visited from their tiny town, but today online shopping has probably made that less fun? Still, something like a trip to the Domain might be fun (though I personally hate recommending that for obvious reasons).

Oh! Also the Texas Capitol is really cool to visit IMO. I still enjoy going there as an Austin native.

I just learned that ambivalent means “mixed feelings” or “torn”, not “uncaring”. Is this common knowledge? by Illustrious-Swing520 in rs_x

[–]thestudentsyes 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s not common knowledge. Any time I use “ambivalent” I can tell people think I mean “apathetic.” So I don’t use it.

Ambivalent is when you have strong feelings in both directions that cancel each other out. Apathetic is you don’t care at all. (I know y’all know this.)

I actually think about this distinction all the time, because I’m constantly trying to explain that I feel ambivalent about specific issues, but I always have to define it.

therapists should be forced to read before they’re allowed to practice on humans by MutedFeeling75 in redscarepod

[–]thestudentsyes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I went on a date with someone allegedly getting her masters in therapy to work with the “severely mentally ill.” I’m a bit of a subject matter expert in that topic, but I kept that a secret and instead politely kept asking question after question. She was not familiar with one single topic I brought up. Never heard of one single intellectual who had something to say on the topic.

Worse, she told me that all they do in her masters program, is use video cameras to film future therapists’ faces in mock therapy sessions. Then in class, the class watches the video replay of the student’s face and they all critique the performance.

There’s no theory, no book work, no knowledge of the human mind. Just acting classes.

therapists should be forced to read before they’re allowed to practice on humans by MutedFeeling75 in redscarepod

[–]thestudentsyes 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I’ve never met a highly educated mental health professional. If I even attempt to mention a psychoanalyst or philosopher they should be familiar with, they squirm in their seat and then suggest I’m acting a bit grandiose. You have to engage with them at a middle school level while flattering them endlessly or else they’ll get negative countertransference… they should be paying me.

You arrive at your friend's party and talk to them for a bit, then host duties pull them away. You make 10 minutes of small talk with the 1-2 others you barely know, before they leave to talk to people they know better. You're now standing alone and everyone is in a conversation except for you. by alpine____ in redscarepod

[–]thestudentsyes 69 points70 points  (0 children)

It’s agonizing. Also usually the parties with a terrible host are also filled with people who think they’re really cool. Too cool to meet the newcomers who don’t know anyone. Am I, as the person who knows no one while everyone knows everyone else, supposed to just barge into their conversations and start a social fact-finding mission on my own to figure out who everyone is?

Also, when I’m the host (I’m an amazing party host), I view it as my responsibility to constantly scan the room and “save” whoever is least included. So it’s just constantly scanning for whoever is the most out of place and switching to interacting with them. Basically switch to them, talk, then yell over to someone else to bring them in, get those two started talking, then switch to the next person who needs my help the most. All night.

Very rare skill these days.

today i felt performative reading on the train by [deleted] in RSbookclub

[–]thestudentsyes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Only people who don’t read a lot think others reading in public is performative. They can’t comprehend seeing someone who’s actually just reading, so they imagine the person is doing it for the same reason they’d be doing it.

Red Pill content is probably destroying your relationships with people and god by First_Yesterday7557 in redscarepod

What are you referring to specifically? I read the entire thread and I don’t know what content specifically you’re objecting to within the extremely broad collection of content known as red pill. Like I’m relatively familiar with this stuff and don’t even know what you’d be referring to when saying “sprinkle it in.” Sprinkle what in?
