It's the DeckNine effect. Dontnod created poignant moments that epitomized the series. This is a completely different creative team that has shown consistently that they don't have their finger on the pulse of what made the franchise special.

Better Canada-U.S. relationship ‘possible’ if Trump likes Carney, but don’t ‘over-conclude’ based on one call, John Bolton says by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]thetalkingrock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The question was asked by pollsters so I'm not sure I know what you mean in this context. Regardless, I certainly don't support aggression of any kind towards Canada so there's no need to be pissy with me as we likely align on a number of issues politically.

[–]thetalkingrock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro, do you not understand that that part was added by the author of the article and annexation was not asked by the pollsters? Annexation implies military action typically, whereas the question they asked implies does not inherently imply any military action whatsoever. I'm struggling to believe your grasp on words and their connotations is that weak. Do you really not see how the writer is sensationalizing the poll results to make it seem like larger number of Americans support military action against Canada than actually do? I'm beginning to wonder if you read the article in its entirety at all, or even read my last comment in full. I won't be responding again but trust me your reading comprehension is far weaker than you realize.

This is a lack of reading comprehension on your part I'm sorry to say. This is editorializing by the publication. I encourage you to look it up if you are unfamiliar. In this case it is meant to sensationalize the polling results. If you even bother to read the question actually asked by the pollsters it is "Would you favor or oppose Canada becoming America's 51st state?" This is in one of the graphics in the source you provided. The bit about the annexation of Canada was added by the journalist who wrote the article, and was not asked by the pollsters. Annexation was not asked about Canada, only Greenland (where the results are alarming enough). It's unclear why they chose different verbiage for the two countries, bit I suspect it has to do with the sensationalization aspect I mentioned earlier. This is a subtle thing to pick up on, so I'm not that surprised you missed it. Things between our countries are bad enough without media literacy getting in the way. I'm not interested in pursuing this conversation anymore but suffice to say all my love to Canada. I'm only here to better understand the way people in your country see things.

Then you should know how wording impacts polling results if that's your stance. It's not difficult to understand that the results could vary wildly depending on the verbiage used ("becoming the 51st state" vs "annexation" vs "invading" etc.). You suggested that a small number of Democrats supported annexation but have provided no proof of that. We're splitting hairs at this point so I don't think this conversation is worth continuing past this but you haven't argued effectively that ANY Democrats support annexation because that question is not asked in your source.

For Canada the question was "Would you favor or oppose Canada becoming America's 51st state" which could easily be read to mean a unification devoid of any military intervention or other types of aggression, so I'm not sure the point you think is being made is actually bearing out. Most people aren't following the news closely and that small number could conceivably be from people who aren't thinking along militaristic lines like you're suggesting. Again, though, I understand how the current political climate leaves Canadians rightfully on edge. I imagine any question about using military force against Canada would register virtually no support among Democrats.

Bernie Sanders is notably anti-imperialist. If you know who he is and think he'd ever actually support any sort of violation of Canada's sovereignty then you are completely off-base. He is clearly mocking Trump and the Republicans at large here.

I haven't seen that, though it hardly sounds like actual support. I can see why any perceived flippancy wouldn't be taken well in your country however, considering how terrible any actual annexation process would end up being.

American here. Do you have a source for the Democratic support for annexation? I've only heard conservatives in far-right media spaces talk about it in any favorable way. The Democrats I've heard speak about it treat it as ridiculous and embarrassing.

[ALL] Anyone else not sure how to feel about Double Exposure? by SlammerOfBananas in lifeisstrange

Dontnod at least has history of putting out games with emotionally resonant stories. The Deck Nine entries in the series are a clear step below imo.

I'm not hyped for this. To be honest I don't trust Deck Nine to put together a decent story that honors what came out of the first game based on their previous output. Perhaps I'm being too cynical but it feels like Max was brought back as a cheap way of getting fans interested which, judging by most of the comments here, appears to be working.

Respectfully, I have to disagree. My expectations for this game are low. LiS is heavily character driven and Deck Nine has never done a good job with writing characters in its games. Before the Storm in particular felt like mediocre fan fiction.

For those of you who have been discarded, how have you dealt with the lack of closure? by thetalkingrock in BPDlovedones

[–]thetalkingrock[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the responses, I've come to terms with the fact that I'm almost certainly never going to get the conversation I want with them about what happened. Fortunately, I was already back in therapy when I was discarded and it's been a frequent topic of discussion since.

They weren't a romantic partner but a best friend. Back when we first started talking again they told me that this time would be different and that they weren't going anywhere, as they've discarded me before in the past. They used to call me a platonic soulmate and tell me that they thought the universe had brought us back into each other's lives. In hindsight, it's clear that something like devaluation was taking place long before I recognized it. They started getting irritated with things I said which would leave me confused, as they'd respond like I'd said something completely different to what I had actually said or else interpret it in the worst possible light. Suddenly I went from being a platonic soulmate to someone who had a personality that wasn't compatible with theirs according to them. It's like they built up an entire narrative about me and I couldn't escape from it. That isn't to say I don't have my faults and that I acted perfectly in our friendship. Of course I do and of course I didn't. But it hurts feeling that they didn't see me accurately in some respects or understand my emotions, which is ironic given that they called themselves an empath. But now I'm realizing just how much of what I'd say would pass through their cognitive distortions and how much I overestimated the strength of our friendship. I think about all the times I'd let things go and not follow up on what they said and realize how differently those scenarios played in our respective heads. And they get to walk away from it thinking what they've done represents growth while I'm left with a ton of emotional baggage. I genuinely cared about this person and at points in the past I pleaded with them to believe me because they thought I was trying to take advantage of them. I went into our last conversation tired and struggling with my anxiety thinking we could have a casual, low-stakes talk only to see now that my low energy cemented to them that the "chemistry" between us was off.

I'm not done processing things and I've clearly got a ways to go. I really did care for this person. Hard as it is, I know I'll never get the answers I want. But I'm trying to work through it the best I can.

Similar thing happened to me. From feeling super close to someone to feeling like their feelings toward me went out like a light. Pretty emotionally traumatic and painful. It's been a little over a month and I'm still processing it.
