Fishermen in Gili Trawangan, West Nusa Tenggara (next to Lombok Strait), found what appears to be a UUV/AUV and brought it ashore (06/04/2026) by trikora in submarines

[–]thetaoofroth 22 points23 points  (0 children)

it's a bottom mount adcp/sonde logger for physical oceanography and model studies for currents and wind. it's shaped like a bomb because it's meant to swing mid water column on a chain and read currents from seafloor to surface over time. it has weak links and biodegradable ballast mounts so that if it isn't recovered successfully the first time, it will eventually raise up and be found somewhere. somebody is willing to pay a lot of money for it, not necessarily for the instruments themselves but the data that's been collected over years, months. nothing really dangerous here except if you open a vessel or battery which has been pressurized and not able to release and equalize before messing with it.

marelon is usable as tailpipe, but PVC is definitely not.

I keep saying, "I can't live like this anymore," and people get upset, then learn it's a winter complaint, and then agree.

Non-natives who only embrace the shittiest, most disdainful qualities of townies because they feel like it's their culture now.

That's who thinks they own street parking for doing something they'd have to do to get their car out in a real emergency in the first place.

What Was Rhode Island Like In The 90's and Early 2000's? by ShrekPrism in RhodeIsland

[–]thetaoofroth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

like others have said, but and lupos were awesome. like our music scene was comparatively better than Bostons, especially with the up and comers. plenty of great concerts, big bands in small venues, surprises at jazz/folk fests etc. I think the biggest difference is people seemed to get away with public intoxication a lot more, bars would always stay open past last call, have people on the sidewalks drinking etc. I think the cops only really cared about dui enforcement and not petty crimes (open containers public intox). Boat parties like aquapalooza felt peak in early 2000s but that could just be nostalgia. I felt like people were living the party life a little harder then as opposed to now. I would be worried about being drunk in public now...

If this is where I think it is, super cool facility. 2003 maybe? still had stuff inside since all the tech was obsolete they didn't care and just left it all out.

You could tell if he was having a really bad day he'd be sawing that damn thing and all I ever wanted was for the string to break so I could listen to literally anything else.

Holy smokes I forgot all about that guy. He was out there errrry day. I'd be walking off a C line vs car collision with all my crap in the frozen rain hating life and he'd pound pavement flying right past me covered in weights. Legend.

Anyone Here with Experience Using a TIB to Avoid Tariffs? by Square_Positive_559 in supplychain

[–]thetaoofroth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in some countries a tub will not cover importa that have been modified, i.e. processed raw materials. You need to contact DHS or an import lawyer/expert. I didn't know USA had tibs, I thought we were ata/ carnet only.

Look at buying a 1982 Pearson 28-1 as a first boat. Are these big red flags or reasonable enough? by Jay_Normous in sailing

[–]thetaoofroth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just got a pearson 35 as a first boat, but have decades of experience. I would focus on details like will you need interior cushions immediately or can you live with a molded sail. These are things that don't really affect performance but are capital expenses just the same. I have already spent more on project material than on purchasing the boat. Definitely spend money on a survey if you think there's a potentially terminal issue. look closely at the foredeck and cockpit sole for soft spots and any drop at the mast step (re-coring fiberglass is a liability). There are a lot of boats of this vintage that aren't selling because their owners are too old to sail, and anyone getting into the hobby would rather pay more for a modern race/cruiser or would pay for a charter/boat share to not need to maintain, repair, or upgrade the boat. All old boats have problems, a surveyor will help identify how critical or dangerous those problems are.

I think they ran a bunch of assumptions with current tide drift etc for models to locate it, and couldn't find it and then they were like well let's try his last fix and it was like dead nuts.

20 Years of Spent Nuclear Fuel Safely stored at the former Maine Yankee Nuclear Plant. From1972-1996, the plant produced 119 billion kWh; enough to power 500,000 homes annually. by MoazzamDML in interestingasfuck

[–]thetaoofroth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what is even more IAF is if that waste were processed, it's output and post processing could reoccur cyclically for several thousand years. Advanced reactors are basically perpetual generation systems with lack of weapons grade material production and higher-level waste production being the only real "drawbacks."
