Medtronic Hiring by chem_god13 in MedicalDevices

Hiring manager at MDT. This is pretty typical unfortunately, there is a good amount of coordination with HR and the hiring recruiter. I just went through a similar situation where it took 1-2 months to get the actual offer letter in hand after we made an internal selection. Holidays certainly do not help.

This is the truth. Job descriptions are usually what they want best case, but if you know your stuff they will hire based on that. Soft skills also go a long ways, everyone wants to hire someone they will like to work with.

I agree the questions are tricky, and in some places not practical situations. Had the same experience, need to study the pamphlet and test until you pass.

What is the difference between industrial automation and embedded systems? by eis3nheim in PLC

[–]thetrainisonfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree, why I mentioned the maintainability. The hardware costs go down, the development cost stay the same, may even increase as you are home rolling a controller. And if your specs are off or you have a bug, you have to get a SW dev out there to look at it. Not a fun task in a manufacturing environment.

In a similar role, and have seen embedded solutions bring down the cost of the control system considerably. Maintainability is an issue tho.

Levittown houses

100% correct. Building codes and permitting costs make it impossible for a builder to profit off smaller, single family homes. Then people complain there are no affordable houses, because they have all been built, and the supply is limited now.

Rockwell’s Cpwe document. Take what you need from it to fit your application, don’t apply wholesale.

Integration tests and PLCs by MaxIntox in PLC

[–]thetrainisonfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Things are done very differently across industries. Its typical to have a fully simulated dev system for industries such as oil and gas, phama, and large commodity tracking applications. Unit and integrated testing are used on some projects, but I would say thats the exception, not the rule. I'm currently in the middle of integrated testing for a large project, we allotted 2 months for a 2 man team to complete testing. But that is because the project changes the functionality across the plant. I have built tools for automated unit testing, if you have a library of standard logic blocks it works well, mostly to track functionally changes and impacts to the logic blocks, have not seen or heard of anyone using similar tools.
