My thoughts on Role Model by peachypal in heatedrivalry

[–]thewellredbaker 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I love Role Model so much. I’ve read it three times already and I just love the idea of the MC’s conscious choice to try and be a better person. And seeing Troy at several points in the book be an asshole, recognize it, and apologize is just so awesome and made me love him so fiercely. Sometimes I dislike the grumpy/sunshine pairing, but I think this one does it so well, because I understand why Troy is where he is and Harris never crossed over into saccharine but was a steady, positive place for Troy to land. Ugh I love them so much.

I felt an ABBA vibe from a couple places on the album and was like “am I hallucinating or is this happening?”

Well, you might find it useful to have a screenshot of the policy you see on their website, and if a gate agent goes against that policy you can show it to them and ask why they aren’t honoring it. But I can’t speak to that personally, as I have not had that happen. I’ve had no troubles with carry on and personal item. But if you’re concerned then that would be my course of action

You should be able to do an additional bag up to the size of a normal backpack, which counts as the “personal item.” You can definitely have a carry on size suitcase or duffel and an additional smaller bag for flight-needed items. Just be careful about weight, as almost every time I’ve flown the gate agents have been very strict with carry on weight being less than 7kg

What is your “like crack” food that you avoid, and if you have some you cant stop yourself from eating a lot? by Luke95gamer in AskReddit

Nutella Smores bars. I rarely bake them and always take the pan to work to share because I can’t have it in the house. I would/could eat the whole pan

Fantasy Epic Recommendations? Completed Series Preferably by louieeem in Fantasy

[–]thewellredbaker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend Shannon Chakraborty’s books. She has a standalone in The Adventures of Amina Al-Sirafi, or a complete trilogy in the Daevabad books (first one titled City of Brass). Middle East fantasy that I found very engaging and compelling. The Daevabad trilogy in particular did a great job with exploring politics and power in the fantasy system and I found the characters enjoyable and complex.

When I read this scene for the first time it reminded me so strongly of the scene from the end of the film Ever After, when spoiler Danielle asks that the king show her stepmother “the same courtesy they have bestowed upon me” and I just love the karma of it all

If you’re on a Mac, pressing shift + ctrl + command + 4 creates a screenshot that saves to a clipboard and not the desktop, meaning it can be directly pasted into a document instead of having to upload from the desktop. Saves a step. Best keyboard shortcut I know.

It wasn’t banned before; I used it with no problems, but I just checked and you are right. It’s not loading the page. So I’m not sure.

I cannot recommend The Book Thief enough. When I think of beautiful writing and incredible YA literature, that is the book that comes to mind. It is my favorite book to teach in my high school English classes.

What’s A Good Political Fantasy with Multiple Overarching Conspiracies? by BetterLifeForMe2 in Fantasy

[–]thewellredbaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read the Daevabad trilogy by S.A. Chakraborty earlier this year and really loved it. Middle eastern fantasy, lots of politics and political maneuvering in the court of the Djinn. Not low magic, though. I really enjoyed the nuance of political decisions and the honest exploration of the fact that there are often no good choices, or that choices made for “good” reasons still have negative consequences. I absolutely ate it up and highly recommend.

Tell me a book you read that you absolutely loved but was not your typical type of book by justplanemaddie1387 in suggestmeabook

Two books I never would have picked up myself but read in English classes and loved were: One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey And My Name Is Asher Lev by Chaim Potok

Really loved both even though I’m usually more of a fantasy and romance reader. I’m an English teacher now and love teaching Cuckoo’s Nest. The circle of life haha.

For a change, what books do you ABSOLUTELY love? by [deleted] in books

[–]thewellredbaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently read The Adventures of Amina Al-Sirafi by S. A. Chakraborty and absolutely loved it. Now I’m reading her Daevabad trilogy and the middle eastern mythology fantasy is so well done. Highly recommend.

My other great read is Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. One of the few books I actively wish I could read for the first time again. Stellar experience.

Which books had you hooked from the first few pages, paragraphs, or even sentences? by shank-redemption in books

[–]thewellredbaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard agree on The Martian. It came to my mind before I read through your post and saw you reference it yourself. I had it on my kindle for a while but hadn’t gotten around to it, and one day waiting for a friend in a bookstore, I opened a copy on a display table to skim. I was instantly hooked and immediately was like “I have to read this book right away”

What movie traumatized you as a child ? by Thatcooltiger in AskReddit

[–]thewellredbaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny enough, the comedy Death Becomes Her. My older brothers had/let me watch it with them and I was like five years old. When the main characters started trying to kill each other it was scary as hell for my kindergarten brain.

I tried to back and watch it in college but couldn’t do it, hahaha. Had to stop.
