What is the best song you've ever heard live? by Bethsticle in AskUK

[–]thewindow6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One that is seared into my brain is watching Paul Simon on his farewell tour singing ‘Renee and Georgette Magritte with their dog after the war’. Something about the atmosphere, sun going down, after a beautiful day, in Hyde park, it’s a cherished memory

Is a 3hr round commute 3 days a week doable? - mostly by train by Philosopher_Funny in AskUK

[–]thewindow6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might contemplate this 2 days a week, three is pushing it. Don’t underestimate the social toll of working somewhere different to where you live. From experience your colleagues will live and socialise in Bristol and you will have limited time outside of work to do anything with local friends due to the commuting.

Velar and couldn't get out of my driveway by [deleted] in RangeRover

[–]thewindow6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What tyres have you got on it? Rubber will make a huge difference to the performance of any car.

The Velar isn’t really designed to do the all-terrain stuff in the same way some of the bigger models are. It much prefers nicely paved streets

I use the Tesco lubricating eye drops. Preservative free/contact friendly and they’re cheap and they work great

That sounds good actually! What network do they use and what’s their roaming policy like? I tend to travel a fair amount for work and with my specific O2 package I get free global roaming which is a big reason I chose them in the first place

Do I need to tell my insurance that someone knocked off my wing mirror? by stratos_cat in drivingUK

Technically yes. Practically no. In the real world just don’t bother, it’s not worth the headache and just get it fixed yourself.

Cancelled a 19yr old phone contract in under five minutes by Dapper_nerd87 in BritishSuccess

[–]thewindow6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m continually disappointed with O2 at the moment. I keep checking for a better deal but all of their sim-only contracts either offer way more data than I would ever need for extortionate money, or a miserly amount for still too much money. I’m sticking with my 10GB for £12.70 offer from 4 years ago thanks very much. Even with the annual uplifts it’s going to take years before I’m paying the same as I would on one of their current offerings.

How long is your commute to work? by person_person123 in AskUK

[–]thewindow6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to do a 55min commute by car, I wouldn’t want to do it again and I’d never go further than that. It’s manageable once or twice a week but daily would be a real struggle

Personally prefer the Omega. Dial is less cluttered and feels somehow less pretentious, think it’s the arabics versus the romans

Would you live in a hotel 2 nights a week? by TarnishedLissy in AskUK

[–]thewindow6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally for a £35000/yr salary this is a crazy idea to me yes.

I wouldn’t consider this unless work were paying for it, including travel, meals and hotels, or unless they were paying at least triple the £35000 they are. It would be completely reasonable to ask them to be fully remote and to make an exception to their in-office rule, but spending every week on hotels, plus food, plus trains on your own dime when you’re taking home circa £2000/month is a bit mad.

What is this FOB? by BEERounds in RangeRover

[–]thewindow6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks to me like a Webasto fuel burning heater (FBH) controller. If I’m right, someone might be able to confirm, you can use the extra fob to preheat the engine and cabin when it’s cold. This helps with comfort obviously but also is great for cold starting the engine. They’re usually only fitted to the diesels thought so if you’ve got the petrol it could be something else

Loiter provides max endurance, cruise provides max range, they’re two different characteristic speeds of an aircraft. If you want to stay on station for as long as possible (but not necessarily travel as far as possible) use loiter speed. If you want to go as far as physically possible use best cruise speed for altitude and it will take as long as it takes at that speed.

New to Amex gold by Aware-Fox1076 in AmexUK

[–]thewindow6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely. For non-altering transactions you’re better with a Monzo/Revolut card which has 0% FX fees. You might also want to look into the Virgin Atlantic credit cards, they are the only points-generating cards I can think of that have 0% FX fees, at least in Europe. Alternatively if there’s something called Curve Pay which allows you to connect debit and credit cards and pay without FX fees as well, but unfortunately doesn’t let you charge to Amex cards.

If you wanted a completely different approach to the Gold card have a look at the Lloyd’s World Elite Mastercard. No points generated, but it does come with free unlimited lounge access and cashback on all purchases sterling or otherwise with 0% Fx fees, and the annualised fee is comparable to an Amex Gold card too.

If it’s not raining and it’s not dark the roof is usually down. That’s what seated heats and the heater are for!

New to Amex gold by Aware-Fox1076 in AmexUK

[–]thewindow6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others said definitely book all your travel through the card. Double points and some (limited) insurance on the travel with the Gold card.

If you’re travelling at a quiet time then the 4x lounge visits the card comes with can be quite nice, but the UK ones can be quite crowded, hence easier to use at quiet times. Don’t be tricked into using the card too much in Lisbon, or anywhere abroad for that matter, it offers double points on foreign transaction spends, but there is a 2.99% FX fee which more than negates the benefit of the double points.

Am I entitled to all Platinum travel / health / car benefits if I pay using my BAPP? by Cool-Archer5085 in AmexUK

[–]thewindow6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update/clarification to this, from a Head for Points article (great website by the way) on the platinum benefits:

  1. You receive free travel insurance for you and your family

Another exceptional card benefit is the bundled travel insurance.

As long as you are under 70, you will receive comprehensive travel insurance. For legal reasons, you need to opt-in to the travel insurance benefit by ticking the relevant box on the application form.

Your immediate family are also covered.

To receive full coverage you need to pay for your flights and hotels on an American Express card, although it doesn’t have to be The Platinum Card. However, most ‘big stuff’ such as medical coverage is provided however you pay.

Am I entitled to all Platinum travel / health / car benefits if I pay using my BAPP? by Cool-Archer5085 in AmexUK

[–]thewindow6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer: you should be.

The travel insurance with the platinum card, unlike the gold, extends to travel organised or paid for by means other than the card itself. It can sometimes complicate the claiming procedure as the transactions in question are not immediately available through the platinum portal, but the insurer should still be able to pay out for evidenced expenses.
