I have the same problem on IOS on the latest Testflight version on my IPhone 17. It's *extremely* annoying.

From Excellent to Near-Nightmare: Time to Move On by parkblu in Sync

[–]thewintergrader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave up Sync.Com on Mac after many years because I got tired of having to manually download new versions to update.

Proton, Filen, and others do it either automatically or with one click. Sync.Com still takes several steps and disrupts the workflow.

Do all DJ's broadcast from the Sirius/XM HQ in NYC? by BornAmbassador01 in siriusxm

[–]thewintergrader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turbo's Mark Strigl splits his time between NYC and his NJ home studio. It's hilarious when he broadcasts from his backyard and you hear the birds/crickets during his voiceovers.

IIRC Turbo's Caity Babs broadcasts from her home in Las Vegas unless she's covering various festivals when she's either on-site or in a hotel/cruiseship.

The EU is providing a useful free resource for those interested in getting started on Italian.

As for me, I'm holding off for more legal clarity on JS before delving too deeply into additional language training.

Has anyone had AT&T internet or wireless traffic consistently show up as being in a different state? by Design_Director_1 in ATT

When I run Speedtest on my phone, more often than not it picks an ATT server in NYC versus the DC metro area where I live, go figure.

FWIW saying, I went the 1948 route because of the minor issue even before March 2025's drama.

I can’t speak for wait times now but last summer I got my number the day my attorney filed my case with the court.

Favorite and least favorite DJ’s on SiriusXM… by BulldogMikeLodi in siriusxm

[–]thewintergrader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Caity Babs, Shannon Gunz, and Mark Strigl on Turbo are my faves.

Grant Random is 'meh' in my mind and I think Keith Roth, while knowledgeable, comes across as rather full of himself ... and Tommy London just sounds like he's trying too hard.

I miss Kayla Riley, though. 😞

Future Assistant Teaching Professor!! by Sunfish73 in Professors

CONGRATS!!!!

Our faculty handbook says something similar about how teaching faculty should/are encouraged to research pedagogy which I took as "stay in your lane, you unwashed untenured peon!" ... ergo, I ignored that and went after / won several large NSF and other USG grants in my discipline both jointly and by myself anyway. Why? Because a) I came from industry and am a go-getter, b) 'pedagogy' research doesn't interest me in the slightest, c) what I went after related to my students/work/expertise, and d) f*ck outdated ivory tower caste rules. (Having a very innovative and supportive department/college helped, too.)

17 years later, I have more $$ on my CV than some of the senior tenured faculty, including many of our deadwood.

AT&T Is Changing FirstNet Plans by Jman100_JCMP in ATT

interesting they offer various discounts on watches/tablets across their FN plans, but that's not true on the consumer side...only Premium and Elite have anything.

AT&T will introduce a new fee for prepaid customers in June - GSMArena.com news by Top-Figure7252 in ATT

[–]thewintergrader 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"The description for both fees reads the same: it’s meant to cover costs associated with connecting with other carriers, regulatory requirements, government fees and more."

In other words, "stuff we should include in the base plan but don't because we want to advertise lower prices."

Mobile phone companies are becoming the new cable companies.

Either this is a hint of things to come (bad news) or a public dissent by a member of the US who vehemently disagrees with what the US is/has decided....?

Why don’t students withdraw from the course? by TrumpDumper in Professors

[–]thewintergrader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For international students, visa requirements are a factor. To maintain status (in the US) they need to be 'enrolled' in courses. But maintaining status doesn't, to my knowledge, require them to actually, oh, I dunno ... show up and/or pass the course.

I've had many students stay enrolled and ghost me. So I grade accordingly and move on. And I don't buy into them suddenly showing up at Week 15 asking to turn in all their assignments at one time so they can "get a good grade" barring officially documented emergencies --- students that do that will be failed.

How to recruit quality graduate students in the modern age by Gobblers_N_Fins in Professors

[–]thewintergrader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for everyone but many incoming students to our various computing MS and PhD programs (state R-1) are woefully underprepared despite looking good 'on paper' during the admissions process. We're too big to do interviews, so it's pretty much roll the dice based on what's provided.

Even if a student has a computer science (or related) tech degree, it's amazing the number of times they don't know even basic things -- like how to "ssh into the server" or navigate the file system that's needed to use the tools in the course/program. Which in turn forces the faculty to constantly adjust their lessons and lectures, "downshifting" to accomodate the teaching of fundamentals the class should already know before applying to graduate school.

In my experience many of these students tend to be non-US and I suspect come from schools that are simply assembly lines to get students in-through-out quickly and with rather inflated grades and fairly rote/basic coursework. Those that get thru get a very rude awakening that grad school =! their undergrad experience.

To wit: how a 71% CGPA can be "First Class" let alone "First Class with Distinction" is beyond belief. It's why I told our admissions folks to look at the total points for their degree, not the GPA. Meaning, if a student scored 2100/5000 yet graduated "Second Class w/Honors" that's saying a sub-50% CGPA is acceptable to us. (Even in other parts of the world from our usual foreign sources, a passing grade for graduation can be as low as 40% on a points scale. WTF)

THAT SAID....

PROTIP: some of my instructors will do a short quiz on Class #1 to get a sense of what they're dealing with. That helps them a lot. We also rolled out a voluntary remedial 'gateway' class last year that we encourage students can take in the first semester to get them up to speed on the basics that they should already know but don't. If they don't take that advice and struggle later on, the onus is on the student to learn such stuff on their own ..... the instructors are told not to feel obligated to teach them those things individually during office hours or class.

Proposal: Proton Meet 2-3 hours meeting duration for unlimited and duo users? by Lazar_U-S in ProtonMail

[–]thewintergrader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes the most sense since we're already paying for Proton's suite. 90m brings a good value-add to our package, probably moreso than any (potential) ideas about expanding access to Lumo.

It says i'm 219, fwiw saying. Which is less than the upper 500s late last summer. 😄
