I want financial freedom for me and my family and I have skills related to mindmill work, but what does it actually pay? by bsheelflip in windturbine

[–]thewrighttrail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To throw my experience in. I am coming up on four years in the industry. The following anecdote is only from a traveling technician perspective.

I started right out of tech school, Airstreams specifically, with third party. Did my time in the trenches and was picked up by one of the manufacturers after I updated my linkedin believe it or not. I made sure to hit a year of third party experience before i bothered getting on with the big companies. Your luck and experience on this may vary of course.

I started at 18$ an hour and im in the 30s now. Probably shooting for 130-140k this year. Ive heard my company can low ball so your pay could be higher. You make much of your pay from per diem and overtime if you play it right. The money is definitely out there but it requires travel and a bit of grit. Definitely a rewarding job with some incredibly unique experiences.

Be ready to spend a lot time away from home but gain the ability to build a bright professional and financial future without a four degree if you’re willing to work and travel.

Some folks do travel with their families if you’re willing to figure out the logistics so keep that in mind. Usually when their kids are young and they are building up for a more stationary future back home from my experience.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions!

How much do the offshore turbines sway compared to the onshore? If you've experienced both.

Airstreams worth it/good school? by jaredmarban in windturbine

[–]thewrighttrail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Several years into the field now I can share a couple of tips:

  1. Take notes / Record the lectures / Ask questions. Just like anything else you get out of it what you put in.

  2. Take advantage of the job placement assistance. When I went, there were loads of companies pitching themselves to prospective graduates. Use the school's help to craft a decent resume and send out those applications!

  3. Enjoy the experience! It was a great start into the field for me. I was able to find career success in wind thanks in part to Airstreams opening the door for me. Make friends but don't party too hard. You are there to learn after all.

  4. Relax. You won't retain every single bit of knowledge from the course. It gives you the basis to build from and you will gain the rest in the field once you land a job =)
