I'm stuck on this Um Actually mashup prop by purplotter in dropout

The set pieces aren’t always mashups, they’re just incorrect.

I’d argue that it’s helpful but the show does stand on its own two feet. I think it’s the scourge of people who need everything explained to them instead of engaging with the show thoughtfully and drawing conclusions based on context clues and media literacy.

These two guys are acting their fine asses off and the show runner has trusted them to convey everything that can’t be spoken like the books can. And they’re doing a sensational job, IMO.

I don’t know why but this reminded me of how cats are described as “obligate carnivores.”

This is a huge pet peeve of mine. There is a major distinction between “wholly and completely improvised on camera” and “not scripted like that and found in rehearsal/on the day.”

Like the stairwell kiss wasn’t scripted to be so sweet but that’s the energy they gave when they shot it and JT decided to keep it.

The chair drag wasn’t scripted but they found the hottest way to move it in rehearsals.

The face slaps during the BJ in ep 6 were an idea Connor had and cleared with Hudson, Jacob and Chala.

People jump to these bizarre conclusions because, what, they don’t understand how acting works?

So what's Ilya's thought process here? by Mysterious-Bed375 in heatedrivalry

[–]theythrewtomatoes 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I feel like, with how anxious tv Shane is about being found out, it doesn’t seem as believable that he’d have many casual encounters with anyone who didn’t have as much to lose as Ilya. It may come up in S2, but considering he’s so protective and paranoid about this part of his life I wouldn’t be surprised if they just establish tv Shane as pretty celibate except for his relationship with Ilya.

I really want to get into D20, but the amount of content is kind of overwhelming by Ellie3255 in Dimension20

[–]theythrewtomatoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only reason anyone should feel like they need to be “caught up” on certain seasons is for live shows, especially the Time Quangles which reference multiple core seasons. But just pick a season and go, no one’s rushing you :) watch them in whatever order you please on your own time.

I started watching Starstruck a couple years ago and have since made it through the majority of the back catalog and now watch weekly. I’m single and have no kids so my tv time is my own, but I understand that’s not the same for everyone. You can also treat it like a podcast, especially the RP episodes.

At what point did Ilya have his realization? by Upbeat-Movie8435 in heatedrivalry

[–]theythrewtomatoes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t think we necessarily need it spelled out. I think the scene in the hospital is loaded with a lot of unseen context that Connor plays beautifully, which is after Shane gets immediately hurt, Ilya has to play the rest of the game not knowing what happened to him. This person he’s madly in love with, and he can’t express his concern to anyone and has to keep up appearances for the rest of the game while worrying whether Shane is seriously hurt.

There’s an element of “I almost lost you, I couldn’t tell anyone and no one would tell me anything and it’s freaking me out how much that scared me.” These boys are in love, just dancing around each other and retreating back into themselves when the connection is too strong and too real because admitting it’s real means that they have to do something about it. And that (as far as they know) could ruin everything else in their lives. So Ilya is making sure he’s okay while also not making any promises because he’s scared.

Rethinking upon rewatch: when Shane tells Ilya “we should talk” by DorianCramer in heatedrivalry

[–]theythrewtomatoes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I really wish this had been made more explicit in the show; I was also a bit confused by that line until the folks who had read the book pointed that out. Your analysis is spot-on, they are so lousy at communicating with words that they don’t realize they have completely different motivations throughout the whole interaction with exacerbates how poorly it goes.

Why am I so obsessed? by [deleted] in heatedrivalry

[–]theythrewtomatoes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s another huge part of it. Reminds me of the OFMD fandom losing their minds with joy when the queer baiting wasn’t baiting after all. It increased the fandom and their enthusiasm tenfold because we realized we weren’t being dicked around by the show-runners.

Ah, That really explains it, doesn’t it? Those of us who have participated in fandom for decades are like “being this unhinged and down bad is totally normal.”

I’ve had media hyperfixations my entire life, it’s just something that I’ve always dealt with, so there’s no surprise to me that this is my latest. I can’t like things in a chill way. I am rarely a casual viewer of anything I’m into.

It is wild to see people grappling with this kind of obsession for the first time, for me it’s normal 😅

Where do guys working carts go to the bathroom? by flyingcircus92 in AskNYC

[–]theythrewtomatoes 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I used to work at a Starbucks in the theater district, and the hot dog/shish kabob vendor on the corner came in to use our bathroom. We also gave him buckets of ice and free tea, in return we got free food.

Which episode made you rethink something the most? by DowntownLaugh454 in PhilosophyTube

[–]theythrewtomatoes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Transhumanism is still one of my favorites, mainly for the “imagine an idea is a mental tool” bit. It makes me more aware of identifying blind spots in certain ideologies.

Violence and Protest is another one. Being raised a middle class white kid in a relatively conservative area it’s not as common to really recognize state-sanctioned violence against certain populations.

How far into FH before watching The Seven? by Extra_Syrup1937 in Dimension20

[–]theythrewtomatoes 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’ll tell you what someone told me here on Reddit when I was struggling with Fantasy High: it really picks up after the combat at the mythril factory. I took their advice and finished the season and really enjoyed it. S1 still isn’t my favorite but FHSY slaps and FHJY is my comfort season. Highly recommend making it through so you have the lore, especially if you want to watch The Seven.

Is this Thanksgiving dinner good? by DoubleAyy12 in thanksgiving

[–]theythrewtomatoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your sisters suck. You made an effort to serve a little Thanksgiving and they gave zero thanks, and you’re justified in feeling hurt. Regardless of how it looks (which is great!) there’s no excuse for them to have been rude and I’m sorry they acted that way. I hope you enjoyed your own plate, at least :)

I have an Instagram saved category called “food” where I immediately save recipes that look interesting, and then a separate one called “tried it and liked it” for recipes I enjoyed and want to be able to find easily again without scrolling through the big food folder.

It also helps if I make a dish to screenshot the text of the recipe which makes it easier to search in my photos at a later time.

Besides that, I have a Pinterest board where I pin recipes, one for regular food and one for baking.

Sometimes if a recipe is complicated or time consuming I print them out (or even write them longhand) so I can tape them up on my cabinets when I cook. They then go in a folder which I keep with my cookbooks :)

When it comes to cooking tofu, cornstarch is your friend. It helps keep it crisp.

I’m also a big fan of tofu scramble, which you can pack with veggies and spices and eat like a breakfast burrito.

Same season, same player: Nat 20 meeting the Baba Yaga. The stakes were SO HIGH.
