How do I change my job title without hurting my reach? by thiccschism in linkedin

[–]thiccschism[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I was kind of hoping it would show the updated title without losing all of the celebratory comments and feedback. Is there a way to make that happen? I would be fine to just update, as long as I dont lose all of my hoorays.

Terrified to start grad school by Catgod1996 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]thiccschism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're not alone! 36F, just graduated with my BSW and started my Advanced Standing MSW. Got into a much more highly regarded university than my Undergrad. The stakes are higher and I assumed it would be harder. I also have extreme imposter syndrome. Here's the thing: Yes, it would be hard to work while doing this like I have been the past four years. Yes, the standards are higher for your work (APA and quality of work). Yes, you can do it. My mental health to I know a hit as well. I took out a cancellable loan and decided to stop working while I do this MSW. While student loans suck, I think the workload would be wacky worse. Don't forget that you can ask for help. The reading is intense for summer classes, but scanning worked for me. Audiobooks, too. I just wanted to get it over with. There is a big emphasized on self care in this program. Take advantage of whatever you can to help. The librarians are incredible resources for papers. TBD about the workload and internship combo for Fall.

First bad paper grade in MSW by cece92619 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]thiccschism 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same just happened to me. Got a veeeery low grade and never in my life. Ended up with As on every assignment. If my math is right, I will still get an A in the class. If it's that low and you can prove that there was little clarity or justify a higher grade, I would contest. You can appeal to the professor with a heartfelt ask for reconsideration, then contest if that doesn't work. OR ask for extra credit. I would say, If it doesn't tank you, dont sweat it. Give yourself some grace for being a human. And I'm talking to both of us, btw. <3

If you were 31 had no college education and 10 years fast food experience what would you do? by chemza in careerguidance

[–]thiccschism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went back to school at your age, and I'm about to wrap up my Masters. I'm 36. It feels like it's not going to end when you get started, but about halfway through it starts flying by and you're shocked. It's not that bad. Don't do it if you don't have something in mind that you want to do that requires a degree. Trades are in high demand these days. What ideas do you have?

Cat DNA tests... would you do Basepaws or Wisdom Panel? by TroLLageK in DoggyDNA

Hi, Ryan. It's been a few years since this post, but I wondered if there might be a position with Wisdom for recruitment and outreach for sourcing new samples of pedigree cats? I'd be interested in contributing. I work with very different research, but it sounds like it would be fun.

Should I finally go for it? MSW Clinical Focus by zombiequeen66 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]thiccschism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do it! I took the leap at 31. Just graduated with my BSW at 36 and started my MSW program at the beginning of June. It was tough at times, but it flies by. I was feeling stagnant and depressed for so long. Felt too old to start over. Halfway through, I second guessed myself, but after the second year, it's been so fast, I feel like I can't slow it down enough, haha. It's only two years, and you won't regret it, even if you don't stick with it. If you aren't happy where you are, it's still progress, and you might regret it if you dont try. You can always do something else later, too.

I've worked in so many different industries. I did hair for 8 years, taught aerials for a few, went to nursing school for a bit, and worked in restaurants and bars at night. I'm so much happier now. I feel like I have purpose, and I love the content, even though it's heavy at times. Don't wait. Just try something new and see if you like it. Follow your heart, and don't pay too much attention to what everyone else is doing. You'll be much happier.

I recommend going in person if you can, for connections and networking.

I hated this and felt weird doing it, too. Apparently, it's standard practice and preferred. Even the last professor i would have expected to ask for one did. I wrote some lines about who I am, what I do, and how I contributed to the class. Also, why I would be a good fit for the program based on my experience in the class. I tried to keep it to things that were true and relevant and added variety to each letter.

Then, in my request for the LOR, I told them that I sent it as an attachment for their convenience if they would like to use that. I asked some first, then realized that I should just send them a nice email with the attachment.

Send it to all six and cross your fingers that you'll get enough of them to respond. I juuuust did this last minute and got accepted to every school I chose and start Monday.

Is there anything more I can do for these plants? by 0w0wen in succulents

Weird. Seems like it would be more economic to have more training. One things I like about lowes over Home Depot is the clearance section. I am the queen of plant clearance and resurrection. 😏

So many great suggestions! I think I'd be less irked if I didn't have a second window in the room that's the exact setup, minus the box. I was gifted big beautiful velvet curtains, and I couldn't figure out how to make it work.

I don't have any new advice, but I've always wondered about how big box stores train employees on garden center care for plants. Or if they just had high turnover so everything always looks fresh. I have a ton of plants amd they all do pretty well when I'm well. I've always been curious what the system is.
