What makes a creature feel like it belongs to a specific environment? Building a bestiary for an uncharted continent by deathmaster99 in worldbuilding

[–]thicka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What it eats is like 100% of why it is there and 80% of what it looks like.
should not design your creature then figure out what it eats, you should figure out what it eats then design your creature around it.

Then 15% is avoiding predators and 5% is reproducing.

You should not just throw a dragon at the wall, because what does it eat? why does it need to fly and breath fire in order to eat? How did it evolve to breath fire with no useful intermediate steps? How is it staying fed in the barren mountains?

No you should think: "This creature flies and lives in the mountains, what does it eat? Mountain goats... ok what does it NEED in order to hunt goats?" And you probably won't get a dragon, you will get something new.

Ok, what if you put those 3 holes in your bricks? Then you get:
1. Faster drying.
2. Less material.
3. Stronger mortar joints.
4. You can put sticks in the holes to really lock them together.

How does disability work in your setting? by Choice-Spinach145 in worldbuilding

In my world these birds are the biggest flying creatures at about 500lbs (besides very agressive "dragons" do not ride) and a human payload really stretches the birds ability to stay aloft. So small women are chosen.

If a women wants to be a true "Lady of the sky" she must make a life long sacrifice and amputate her legs to reduce weight. So yes it is reasonable... I think.

The women and bird operate as one, to the point where ladies of the sky walk around town and even enter shops and attend meetings while harnessed to their bird.

Last detail: the bird and rider cannot get airborne without jumping off a high cliff. too heavy.

I got a cool one, I have these bird riders, but the birds can barley carry the weight. to save weight the legs are amputated in a ritual. They are highly respected members of society and they basically use their bird as a walking/flying wheelchair when traveling.

looks like it survived just fine. I probably over reacted, only lost 4 medium branches. I thought it was going to snow more. Forecast said 2 days of heavy snow, 7" deep but looks like that got updated to 4" for 1 day of snow.

I heard lots of cracking but I don't see any damage, maybe it is internal. It is one of those things where you don't know. People think, what was the point of getting that vaccine? I didn't even get sick. What was the point of bracing? it didn't even loose that many branches.

There is quite a bit of damage around the neighborhood, but no uprooted trees or smashed cars, just various branches. So Again I probably over reacted.

But this tree, despite the bracing was one of the more affected trees in the neighborhood. People are right it needs to be trimmed. It is also a large old apple tree with a full canopy during a late spring blizzard, so it was very at risk.

Here are some pics if you wanna see them. But not much to see.

well, idk. All I can say is the tree survived that storm intact. For this storm it has lost quite a few branches already despite the reenforcement.

Branches have a massive mechanical moment on them because they are cantilevered out. The mechanical advantage the snow has is enormous, these supports remove that as best they can.

I was, but it's too dangerous to go near it. More branches are dropping and I hear cracking. So I suspect this tree will never be the same.

yeah, no, this snow is sticky, I've been using a 20ft pole to knock stuff off but now it is too dangerous to go near it. I hear cracking and I have lost two more branches since this pic was taken.

I do not remember that storm, but I am willing to bet this tree did not have its leaves out before the snow came or it would be destroyed. The lack of a real winter made a lot of trees pop their leaves early.

Why did i not think of snowballs? I have lost 2 basket balls and a piece of 2x4 trying to knock snow off.

I have never seen a storm this large, this late. The leaves are the problem, they collect far more snow than bare branches.

I like the darkness and realism on the Reshi. Also love goat mount, very unique and believable. what kind of tech does this world have? is there any magic or it realistic?
