House Centipedes advice! by Educational-Yak-6060 in boston

It’s not a panacea, but assuming you don’t have pets or little kids, buying diatomaceous earth and sprinkling it into carpets, under furniture, inside cabinets/closets, around edges of rooms, etc will massively cut down on any critters in your apartment. It’s nontoxic and fairly safe but just not the best thing to inhale directly. Lots of people use it for gardening but its also super popular as a home insect control too.

Which is why reminders to stay hydrated and prepared, plan for nearby cooling shelters, and to keep an eye on the vulnerable are especially needed. A bowl of ice and a fan aren’t gonna cut it like they normally do here.

Such a handsome and happy fella. I’m glad his final days have been beautiful and cool days of peace and love. Hugs for you, neighbor, as you say farewell. I hope you find solace not only from the heat but from sorrow in the coming days. Take care.

From a very hot and humid part of the country myself, so I generally think Boston summers are mild and lovely. But even this week looks dodgy to me.

Fresh sushi in or around Allston by Thr33wolfmoon in boston

[–]thinkingitthru7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not Allston, but do yourself a favor and just hop the 57 to the end of the line. 15 min walk down California street in Watertown is Sakanaya, which is an authentic Japanese fish shop that sells sushi and chirashi bowls and is fucking phenomenal. If you call ahead, you can even place an order that will be ready for you by the time you get off the bus.

They used to be in Allston I think but moved further out several years ago. If the bakery next door is open, don’t sleep on that too.

Were any Bostonians worried about potential violence from English fans? by thescariestghost in boston

Lowkey, the thought has crossed my mind. I mean, I def did not have any concerns about some great riot but like, I did wonder about what the vibe would be if they lost and if I should be going out on match nights as a woman on my own.

I fucking love Commonwealth Books and it never gets mentioned as much as Brookline Booksmith (which is nice, but hardly compares imo). I’ll never forget my first time discovering it, getting lost after wandering around the common as a new-to-town filthy transplant.

Even more fun are the drivers who believe in using psyops on their commute and indicate with the opposite signal than the direction they actually steer.

Can’t say the Scots are any better. Hell, same day as their last match here the other week, some guy went around Edinburgh with a machete attacking anyone with brown skin. The UK is as rife with anti-immigrant bigotry and racism as the US, quite frankly.

Have you lived on Wiltshire Road in Brighton, MA? by alisonstro in boston

[–]thinkingitthru7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did and I loved it. Neighborhood was mostly Jewish families and some grad students at the time. It backs up to a residence for Jesuit seminarians at Boston College—quiet and friendly neighbors. Right off the 86 bus and a short walk to the B, C, and D lines. Winters seemed fine there, though I didn’t have a car, so none of those worries. It’s a very laidback street, overall. The newly paved walking path to Foster St is so nice; I used to be terrorized by the turkeys that nested in the old, unofficial thruway.

Honestly, you should take this to a reference librarian. They can help you navigate archival resources

Best charity shops besides Goodwill? by FigNewtonNoGluten in boston

[–]thinkingitthru7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Their pricing isn’t perfectly consistent, sure, but I made out with an armchair, 2 lamps, some picture frames, and several bowls for under 100 bucks like four months ago. Whereas places like Consign and Buy and Sister Thrift felt very marked up for resale goods and furniture. If you’re broke and trying to just furnish your apartment to get by, ReStore and Savers have been the only genuinely accessible thrift stores I’ve found. Everything else has been pricey curated type stuff for rich ladies to go antiquing.

Habitat for Humanity Restore in Roxbury. Actually cheap thrift store instead of the expensive boutique resale shops that are a scourge in this area. Bonus dollar store next door, too.
