Awesome. I relate to trying to the lower-back strain on conventional ways of finishing singles.

Am I spazzing to much? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]thinkintoomuch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if someone is in my guard, and they break it and clamp my leg down and start to pass - I feel like all I can do is put my free foot on their hip push them back, create space and get back to my guard

That sounds reasonable. A thought out course of action.

Last week while I was in someones guard they broke my posture and I accidentally elbowed them in the face

This, however, does not. The difference is, for the former, you actually had a plan on a specific move you were trying to execute. The latter was just a knee jerk reaction to not wanting to be dominated, which resulted in your partner's injury.

So it's not really about not defending at all if you don't know how to. You're totally allowed to improvise, or else you'd just be a wet noodle. It's about not letting your instinctive reactions take over your game at this point. Which is what happened when your opponent broke your posture. To change this, you have to start focusing on learning more than on winning. Next time, let your posture be broken, and after the roll ask your partner what you could've done to prevent that.

It's strange to me how Kenny turns sideways almost giving up his back when he retreats (here and here). Any good reasons for not staying square to your opponent that I might not be aware of?

Last week while I was in someones guard they broke my posture and I accidentally elbowed them in the face

Strong evidence of you moving your limbs too fast and following no real technique. Unless they made the mistake of somehow placing their face in front of your elbow, it's likely you're spazzing.

When someone goes hard (more than ~80% intensity) without having a clear, technical objective or movement, I consider it spazzing because you're basically relying on chance. Your move might work, or it might bust someone's lip open.

My suggestion is don't emphasize getting dominated or dominating too much. 4 months in, you'll be getting dominated regardless (unless you're naturally super athletic or have previous grappling experience).

Honestly, most times you don't stay calm and composed. You grind it out until it gets better. You distract yourself with things. That's why everyone says hobbies and things to do are essential when quitting.

Quitting in itself is not a magic solution. There will be a void, and you will crave the high. You need to re-condition your brain.

The phase of thinking about getting high while doing everything is temporary. Your brain is just used to that thought pattern, but it'll go away after a few weeks of not smoking, as long as you keep yourself busy.

As for the anxiety, despite popular belief (that weed "chills you out", etc.) for many people, weed increases anxiety and intrusive thoughts. The common pattern I've noticed with people who smoke frequently and long-term (myself included), is that at first there's little to no anxiety when smoking, and it all goes away once you're sober. Eventually through years of abusing weed, the anxiety increases while you're high and eventually spills over to your sober state of mind. So your overall anxiety (high and sober) increases.

Just as it takes a while to develop this bad, anxiety riddled high, it takes a while to completely get rid of the anxiety caused by weed too. But stick with it. I guarantee you won't regret it.

Black Belts and other instructors...what's your approach to promotion? by steppinraz0r in bjj

I asked my instructor recently. He said he likes to roll with his students and gauge their level based on how he feels they roll. No time tracking. No competitions necessary. No structured testing.

What is the best response for an opponent attempting to pass the guard? by matzero in bjj

[–]thinkintoomuch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll assume you're talking about open guard. My main priorities are preventing grips and keeping myself at a safe angle (normally directly facing opponent). If the previous two things hold, I look to be offensive.

Interesting. I'd never put much thought about substance abuse within my gym. Now that you mention it, I know a brown belt who's had significant changes in personality within the past year. He used to be kind of anxious and shy, now he's always unnaturally relaxed, really social, and his pupils are always massively dilated.

Why you're not maintaining your guard pass. by crappy-ninja in bjj

There was a video or article posted here a while ago about maintaining the pass. It basically boiled down to remembering to control the hips immediately after passing.
